Campus Faculty Invited to Attend 2023 UCM Faculty Senate Teaching and Research Conference

The University of Central Missouri Faculty Senate Teaching and Research Conference is supported by the Faculty Senate and the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The theme for this year’s conference on Monday, Sept. 18 is “Strengthening Our Practice; Empowering Our Students.” This one-day event includes 20 breakout sessions, conducted by university faculty members; a discussion event with topic-based tables; and free box lunch and coffee stations all day. Flower Darby, an author and seasoned online and face-to-face educator with more than 25 years of experience in higher education, will present the keynote address. ....

When Susan Hrach was wrapping up her new book on the connection between physicality and learning, she figured it would be tough to get professors to adopt its recommendations for incorporating movement into their teaching. “It’s always been a very hard sell to get people to change what they had been doing for a long time,” says Hrach, director of a faculty teaching center at Columbus State University, in Georgia. And college instruction has long been identified with sitting in rows of chairs bolted to the floor and listening to a lecture. ....

Online learning is still new to most instructors and students. Despite the fact that classes across Cornell and the globe have been taught online for years, only a small minority were accustomed to this learning format prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As instructors and students are still adjusting to the online format imposed on them at the outbreak of the pandemic a year ago, the Cornell Online Learning Community (COLC) asked speakers and participants at its 7th annual event, “What Works and What’s Next in online teaching and learning?”
Over 100 participants gathered virtually on March 9, 2021, sponsored by the Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI), to look back on a year of online teaching to understand successful strategies to adapt as they continue developing this relatively new learning space. ....
