SPOKANE — An elected prosecuting attorney in Washington state has announced his resignation, citing an inability to handle caseloads with existing staff and “racially motivated attacks” from the community.
Okanogan County Attorney Arian Noma, a Republican, drafted his resignation letter earlier this month and is expected to resign on Jan. 15 after two years in the position, The Spokesman-Review reported Sunday.
“I routinely received vile attacks about my race, ancestry, and even the color of my skin,” Noma said in his resignation letter. Noma’s ancestry includes Native American, Black and immigrant heritage.

Two seek prosecutor post, so far


OKANOGAN – Two applications have been received so far from people hoping to become Okanogan County’s next prosecuting attorney.
The Okanogan County Republican Central Committee will provide up to three candidate names to county commissioners, who will make the appointment. Arian Noma, a Republican elected in 2018, plans to leave the position Jan. 15, 2021.
Teagan Levine, chairwoman of the Okanogan County Republicans, said she’s received letters of interest from Melanie Bailey, a county contract public defender, and David Stevens, chief criminal deputy prosecutor.
Republican attorneys who live within the county have until Jan. 1 to submit applications to ocrpchair@gmail.com.
Levine said elected precinct committee officers will vote on the applicants and forward up to three names to commissioners. The goal is to have someone selected by the time Noma leaves office.

Okanogan prosecutor to resign; cites small budget, racism


OKANOGAN — Pointing to a woeful budget and racial discrimination, Okanogan County Prosecutor Arian Noma has filed his resignation.
In a news release Friday, Noma wrote “The combination of an impossible institutional task and an utterly dehumanizing work context makes my tenure as your Prosecutor untenable.”
Noma was elected prosecutor in 2018 with nearly 60% of the vote after running on a campaign of reform. His resignation is effective Jan. 15.
The Okanogan County Commission did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
Noma explained the primary reason for announcing his resignation was to call attention to his undersized, overworked and underfunded staff. He said the prosecutor’s office is short-staffed by at least seven attorneys and three support staff.
