From Champions League challengers to European also-rans: Arsenal fans will never forgive Kroenke for 14-year journey into obscurity

At Highbury, Arsenal were world beaters. At the Emirates, they have been anything but.
A club once famed for its stability and values, is now a rudderless mess, one that is desperately scrambling around to keep hold of some sort of the identity it once had.
And while there will be some who will point the finger at the managers when it comes to proportioning blame, the rapid decline can all be traced back to one man.
Yes, Arsene Wenger should have left earlier than he did. Yes, Unai Emery was a poor choice of replacement for the Frenchman and yes, Mikel Arteta is now looking like a gamble that might not pay off.

Date published: Saturday 8th May 2021 2:14 - Matthew Briggs
Arsenal reportedly made Lyon an offer for midfielder Houssem Aouar last summer after his impressive form for the Ligue 1 side.
Aouar scored nine goals and claimed 10 assists last season, helping Lyon into the Champions League semi-finals. The interest in the French midfielder was high with “some strong interest” from a number of sides in Europe. And the Gunners were one of those teams and made an attempt to sign the 22-year-old. That is according to
L’Equipe via
Juventus and PSG were also monitoring the player, but only Arsenal made a firm offer.

'Aubameyang is a killer' - Villarreal 'expecting the best version' of Arsenal striker, says Emery

Emery hails Aubameyang
Emery, who coached Aubameyeng for a year-and-a-half at Arsenal before he was sacked in November 2019, is wary of the threat the Gabon international could pose his side as they bid to book their place in the Europa League final.
"He's a killer and always will be," the Spaniard told a pre-match press conference. "He's back now, and that means the alarms go off. He's very hard to stop.
"We work expecting the best version of Auba. He's a great person and player."

'I feel responsible' - Aubameyang out for Arsenal redemption after season from hell

“I think it was my best performance since I’ve been here at Arsenal,” Aubameyang recalled this week. “It was a really great game.”
That night in Valencia was arguably Aubameyang’s greatest in an Arsenal shirt, although his heroics in the FA Cup last season, when he almost single handedly won the Gunners the trophy with his goals in the semi-final against Manchester City and the final against Chelsea, push it close.
But few will ever forget that performance in Valencia and the ruthlessness he showed in the most pressurised of situations.
Now, two years on, Arsenal need their talisman to do it all over again.

What has been said?
When asked if he felt the players would be lifted by fans welcoming them into the ground, the Arsenal boss said: “I think that would be great.
“We’ve been missing them so much. We need them and for the players and the team to feel that they are right behind them supporting them.
“I think it is the 10th time the club has played a European semi-final, so it’s a big moment for us. Hopefully we can have them closer than we have already in the last few months.”

Unai Emery described Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a “killer” as he hopes the forward does not repeat his Europa League semi-final heroics of 2019 on Thursday night.
Aubameyangscored a hat-trick for Emery’s Arsenal as they won in Valencia to reach the final two years ago, only to lose to Chelsea in Baku. This time around, Emery is in charge of Villarreal and he returns to the Emirates Stadium for the first time with his current side holding a 2-1 aggregate lead.
Aubameyang was a late substitute in last week’s first leg having only recently recovered from malaria – but he is likely to start on Thursday as Arsenal look to overturn the deficit and make the final.
