A NEW FEDERAL INITIATIVE TO MONITOR COVID-19 RELATED SCAMS AIMS TO WARN YOU BEFORE YOU LOSE MONEY. CONSUMER REPORTER ASA AARONS SMITH EXPLAINS. (ASA / STAND UP OPEN):52 ON STAND UP FILE AFTER DECADES OF FIGHTING SCAMS I CAN TELL YOU THEY HAVE BECOME INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED ---- AND, MOREOVER ---- THEY HAVE BECOME BOLD. HOW BOLD? TAKE A LOOK. (ASA/ATC) THIS WEBSITE MAY LOOK LIKE THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION. THE SITE'S DESIGN AND COLOR MATCH THAT OF THE WELL- KNOWN WATCHDOG AGENCY AND EVEN THE ARTICLES HINT OF THE FTC. THERE'S JUST ONE PROBLEM. THIS IS NOT THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION, BUT THE U.S. TRADING COMMISSION. IT'S NOT A CONSUMER WATCHDOG BUT AN ATTACK DOG AS FAR AS YOUR WALLET IS CONCERNED. INVESTIGATORS AT THE REAL FTC SAY IT IS LOADED WITH TRAPS TO TAKE YOUR MONEY FAST THOUGH BOGUS INFORMATION AND COVID-19 SCAM PURCHASES, AS WELL AS THE SLOWER AND PAINFUL METHOD OF STEALING YOUR IDENTITY FOR FRAUDULENT PURCHASES. BOLD? ABSOLUTELY. THE ONLY THING CLOSE I'VE SEEN INVOLVED HIGHJACKING THE FBI WEBSITE. THAT DIDN'T GO WELL FOR THE PERPETRATORS. CON ARTISTS WHO SCHEME TO IMPERSONATE GOVERNMENT WEBSITES, PARTICULARLY SITES WITH COVID 19 INFORMATION, USE RUSES LIKE PERSONAL PROTECTION DEVICES, INSTANT COVID TESTS, SO- CALLED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EVEN ANTI-VIRUS DIETS. THE ENDLESS VARIETY OF SCAMS ALL AIM AT GETTING ONE THING ... YOUR MONEY. THESE DUBIOUS SITES ARE ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY- EVEN WHEN THEY'RE NOT ABOUT THE MONEY THEY'RE ABOUT THE MONEY. ASK US REPRESENTATIVE BUDDY CARTER OF GEORGIA. SPEAKER 2: (03:26) ON CARTER FILE "THERE'S ALWAYS MONEY SCAMS, UM, AND THEY, THEY HAVE BEEN INCREASING DURING THE PANDEMIC AND WE SEE THAT QUITE, WE SEE IT ALL THE TIME AND IT'S AMAZING HOW MANY PEOPLE FALL VICTIM TO IT (ASA/ATC) CARTER RECENTLY SPONSORED BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION CALLED THE COMBATING PANDEMIC SCAMS ACT, WHICH WAS SIGNED INTO LAW JANUARY 5. IT WILL REQUIRE THE FDA, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE AND THE INTERNET CRIME COMPLAINT CENTER TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT KNOWN SCAMS. WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE, CARTER SAYS THE PUBLIC CAN BETTER AVOID BEING DUPED. (SOT FULL) CARTER SPEAKER 2: (06:18) THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE IS TO PREPARE YOURSELF WITH AS MUCH KNOWLEDGE AS YOU CAN, UM, ASK AS MANY QUESTIONS AS YOU CAN UTILIZE THESE WEBSITES, UTILIZE. WHAT'S THE INFORMATION THAT'S AVAILABLE TO YOU TO SEE IF, UM, THIS IS LEGIT, CHECK THESE THINGS OUT BEFORE YOU COMMIT TO ANYTHING, MAKE SURE THAT YOU'VE DONE YOUR DUE DILIGENCE, (ASA/SOT FULL) 4:26 ON STAND UP FILE THAT DUE DILIGENCE COULD SOON BECOME EASIER. THE NEW LAW CALLS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A SINGLE WEBSITE TO AGGREGATE INFORMATION FROM MULTIPLE WATCHDOG AGENCIES. I'LL TELL YOU JUST AS SOON AS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GETS THAT UP AND RUNNING. I'M CONSUMER REPORTER AAS FOR WJCL 22 NEWS. REMEMBER---- IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR ASA-

Ask Asa: Alternative banks could offer missing stimulus solution

Updated: 11:42 AM EST Jan 21, 2021
Asa Aarons Smith
For many, it's not just a stimulus check. It's survival money. "We need this for groceries," said Loretta Akin of Hilton Head. Some people have already stretched their existing credit cards to the limit. Considering high-interest rates and other charges, this is a dubious solution. You may want to think about looking into alternative banks. These financial technology companies promise to help their members avoid bank fees, save money and improve their financial fitness. Born from the growth of internet commerce, these digital banks operate online without branch offices. One — that's its name — One contacted us to say it might have solutions for some of the people caught in the stimulus squeeze. The company's Chief Marketing Officer, Meg Sloan, explained. "Our founder and CEO Brian Hamilton came from a family that was surviving paycheck to paycheck, and he felt like the current structures and the way that banks operate just don't support people getting out of that cycle," she said. One offers a variety of savings and credit plans you can use with very little investment. "We have people setting up an account with $10. We have people setting up an account with a thousand or more. We do not pass any judgment," she said.So how does this help if you haven't received your stimulus? Start-ups like one offer credit lines. If you're approved for one of these credit lines, you won't have to pay interest if you repay it before the end of the calendar month.Your credit rating and other factors will help determine whether you can get some cash now. "We have a little saying like your paycheck should do more than show up, and the same is true for your stimulus check. It should do more than show up. And it really is up to the consumer to make a choice, to put it somewhere where it's going to do that," she said.A bank like this isn't the answer to all your problems. But it is an option — and one worth investigating.Have a consumer question or problems? Write me here at WJCL-TV: ASA@askasa.com.
