It is not for the first time that the area is witnessing such a natural disaster. It is also not the first time that the government has allowed dam projects in the fragile Himalayan ecology
It has been more than 48 hours, but the villagers of Raini are still reeling from effects of the loud crashing sound that was followed by an almost deafening roar of the river, as it bolstered down the narrow gorge on February 7. From the cluster of glaciers of the Nanda Devi massif, a hefty chunk got detached and was swept down the Rishiganga gorge towards the base of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, and it took less than ten seconds for the flash flood to completely submerge the dam structure of the Rishiganga hydropower project, blasting it into smithereens.

'The real Chipko': Shekhar Pathak has written a comprehensive, people's history of the movement

‘The real Chipko’: How Shekhar Pathak wrote the first exhaustive, people’s history of the movement
Pathak’s new book focuses on the ordinary, often unlettered, men, women and children who shaped the forest rights struggle.
Dec 27, 2020 · 06:30 am
I first came across Shekhar Pathak’s name in the files of the Uttar Pradesh State Archives in Lucknow. The year was 1983, and I was working on a dissertation on the social history of forests in the Uttarakhand Himalaya. In those days the UP State Archives were well run; the files one ordered came to one’s desk fairly quickly, and with all their pages intact. On the inside back cover of each file was a list of all the scholars who had seen that particular document before. Studying the records of the Forest Department and the General Administration, I found that in some cases I was the first person to have ordered a particular file, but in most cases the second. The person who had got to these records before me was a certain Shekhar Pathak.

How Can Uttarakhand's Endangered Van Raji People Be Saved Without Imposing?

Comments
“We eat the whole bat except for its head. The oil from burning of bat flesh is rubbed on children’s chests during cough and cold.” Gopal Singh Rajwar showed me limestone caves colonised by bats, on the forest’s edge.
Gopal is amongst the last 1000 individuals of the Van-Raji tribe that is listed amongst the 18 most threatened human groups in India.
Van-Rajis have mostly settled in villages of Kumaon Himalayas, in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand. A few of them live in Western Nepal too. Mostly, they are cave-dwellers. In Askot Wildlife Sanctuary in Pithoragarh are the Raji villages of Kimkhola and Bhagtirwa.
