then you just got to wait. you want to go. -you know the risk, and you know what you're getting ready to do. you know, if you don't, you probably shouldn't be in that business. -rick husband got the whole crew together inside the suit room before they went out the door into the hallway. and they all got together, arms around each other, head bowed, and said a prayer. -amen. -amen. -amen. -christian, hindu, jew, all together as one... [ cheers and applause ] ...as they walked out of the suit room. ♪ -and our astronauts are coming out now, as they are making their way to the astronaut van. -hey, dave. -dreaming of sleeping in space. -in 2003, i was responsible for all the astronauts. [ laughter ] -but he's gonna lose. -i was here supporting. i was an astronaut myself. -you're out. -every time you get suited up, there is anticipation. i don't know. anxiety, excitement. yeah, launch day is pretty special. ♪ [ indistinct speaking ] -okay. -alright. here we go. [ hands tapping rhythmically ] [ laughs ] -every launch, we do this really strange thing where we play this card game, this poker game, because it's been done since neil armstrong. -you win. you win. no, that's good. it's good. it's good to win. -i get to go to space. -one step closer to launch here. -everything is timed very specifically. and they actually have a, you know -- it was an old analog clock with a marker on it.

but he thought about it. i mean, he thought about the safety issues, and he knew he was in a dangerous career field. -i'm probably different than most astronauts. i really don't enjoy launches, you know? i think a launch is a terrible way to get to space. when you launch in a rocket, you're not really flying that rocket. you're just sort of hanging on. even though we've gone to great pains to to make it as safe as we can, there's always the potential for something going wrong. you know, so we try not to think about those things. we train and try to prepare for the things that may go wrong. but there's always that unknown. and i guess it's that unknown that i don't like. -i went with michael to florida for the first time and actually saw the shuttle. and when i saw it, i was like, "you really want to get up in this? you really, really, really want to do this?" [laughs] i remember saying to him because somehow it didn't look as glamorous as it did on television.

[ upbeat music playing on radio ] ♪ ♪ ♪ i was thinking about this foam strike all weekend. and i thought, "can't we get the astronauts to look through this side hatch window?" there's a little window right here. this little dark circle. could they have looked back to this area in here to see if there's any damage -- debris, residue, anything? what i was expecting is you first look with your eyes. just look. ♪

-wow. oh, my goodness. oh. -it looks like we've got a van, probably full of family members of the astronauts, being driven away. that's not good. -and i'm standing at the runway. i'm listening to the radio, and i'm listening to the calls. i knew my biggest fear is coming true. turned around, shaking my head. just walked away. there wasn't anything else you could do. ♪ i remember grabbing mom's arm and saying, "mom, is daddy okay?" -and i was just kind of staring out of the window, trying to figure out what was happening. i can just hear my mom and the driver just kind of whispering in a hushed tone.

-the night before landing, we went out to dinner, and i was still concerned. "we really don't know the damage yet. it could be bad." -that's all we talked about -- the landing the next morning and how things had gone so badly the last two weeks. -i was recounting all of the pushback that we were getting from management -- two weeks of just utter frustration and anger. -we talked a lot about the worst-case scenario. -if they're having trouble with the wing, it would be during entry, when the shuttle and the astronauts are coming on that hot entry, high-speed hot entry, into the earth's atmosphere and they're going to attempt a landing. ♪ ♪

so, that was the first of my classmates. ♪ this was not something i was trained for. -astronaut mark kelly came in and said, ""this is what we would like to do. we want to be very respectful of our friends and our colleagues." he wanted to not do anything until they had a priest or a pastor. -we just tried to do the best job we can to handle this as respectfully as possible. -we placed the human remains into the hearse, and it was taken back to the sheriff's office. ♪ eventually, all seven astronauts were recovered. ♪

american astronauts flying on american rockets from american soil into space once again. it's a very exciting time for our space program. sending people into space is dangerous. more dangerous than most things. it's one of the riskiest things that people have ever done. -to be able to experience this incredible career of being an astronaut was something that we always called a calculated risk. rick died doing something that he was very passionate about. in the end, i had to very purposely make a decision that this was not gonna be something that was gonna define me for the rest of my life. i didn't want to go down that path of "it's your fault or your fault, or i'm angry about this and i can't let go of it." none of that was a path
