would have overall security responsibility in gaza for an indefinite period , once the war ends. washington says it opposes what it calls a reoccupation of gaza by israel, and that the territory must remain palestinian land. here s what both parties had to say on the matter. we see what happens when we don t have that security, what we see is a eruption of hamas on a scale that we haven t seen before. the president maintains his position, that a re occupation by israeli forces is not the right thing to do. we ll let them speak to their intentions but we are definitely having conversations about what the post conflict environment ought to look like, and what governance in gaza will look like. one thing there is absolutely no daylight on is hamas cannot be part of that equation. in gaza itself, the israeli defence minister says his troops have now battled their way into gaza city, thought to be the stronghold of hamas designated by several western countries as a terr ....

shira, who turned 20 years old last saturday, is behind the wheel of a 30 tonne truck. there is a lull in her delivery of rockets to front line israel defence force units, targeting gaza. so, what are your family s thoughts now that you re here? gaza is just two kilometres that way. they re very proud. they know that we are fighting for our country and this is our place. we don t have another place to go. that sentiment is at the heart of israel s response to what hamas did. the sense that the country needs to be saved. amir is a sergeant in this artillery unit. i d never been to war. i m 20 years old. i didn t really believe that i would go to war. is there an element of revenge involved? no, not revenge. i wouldn t say revenge. sure. if i wouldn t be there to stop them, it willjust continue. they ll go to my house. i live in the centre of israel and if i wouldn t be there to stop them, they ll come to my family. and so gaza is pounded, day after day. we watch as the t ....

king charles has carried out his first state opening of parliament as monarch. the speech, written by the government, has set out the plans for year ahead. proposed laws include tougher sentences for some crimes, a phased ban on smoking and more licensing for oil and gas fields in the north sea. our political correspondent helen catt has more. just before 11.15, the royal carriage drew into the sovereign entrance, carrying for the first time in seven decades, the king, to formally open parliament. while the monarch had changed, the pageantry remained the same. as is tradition, black rod went to the commons and had the door slammed shut against her by mps. before she summoned them to the lords. on the way, the prime minister and the leader of the opposition appeared to be having a friendly chat but this speech, written by the government, was in part about drawing dividing lines between them ahead of an election. but first, the king acknowledged the significance of this ....

good evening. we re live in southern israel, with news tonight from the defence minister, that his troops have now battled their way into gaza city, thought to be the stronghold of hamas. the fighting, which is street to street, is taking place just a few kilometres off in the darkness behind me. it s exactly a month since hamas killed 1,400 people, in coordinated attacks on southern israel, planned in gaza, and today, israelis attended vigils, lit candles and held a minute s silence in remembrance of those who died. like the scores of young people who lost their lives, slaughtered at a music festival near the border. and there have been special prayers for the 2112 israelis taken hostage, and still being held by hamas. israel hit back immediately after the attacks, with massive air strikes, that have reduced much of gaza to rubble. the hamas controlled health authorities there say more than 10,000 palestinians have died, while the un has called the territory, a gravey ....

a thought about your youth, because when you were young, you were a revolutionary. you wanted dramatic change, to destroy the status quo. i just wonder if you ve brought that spirit into your physics, into your study of the universe. yes. it was not.notjust me. it was a big chunk of my generation that had this dream of changing the world, right? and then making a world better without wars, without borders. we got disappointed. we sort of thought, well, the rest of the planet, the rest of the people doesn t really want to change the world so much. and i think it s a moment of disappointment that i found something else which was revolutionary, which was modern physics. so i shifted from political revolution to scientific revolution. and what sense can you describe physics as potentially revolutionary? because we have a worldview in which we think we know everything. right? this is up, this is down, the earth is flat, nothing is moving. this is solid, continuous. and then ....
