Shola Sanni, Director of Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa at Netflix, has countered South Africa s proposal of a legislation that will enforce a 30% local content quota on all streaming services. 110 000+ South Africans voiced opposition against plans that will force users of laptops, tablets and streaming accounts to pay TV licences.
The
South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) confirmed thousands of South Africans “have voiced their opposition against plans that will force users of laptops, tablets, decoders and streaming platforms” to pay TV licences.
More than 110 000 South Africans have signed a petition to ask the minister in charge of the South African Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) to reconsider the amendments.

Durban - THE draft bill to extend the payment of TV licensing fees to other streaming services such as Netflix will likely very soon become law.
This is according to political commentator Xolani Dube of the Xubera Institute for Research and Development, who says if the majority party is supported by the smaller opposition parties in Parliament, the bill will pass.
