Critics bash Nepal's plan to 'protect' women by limiting right to travel

To the Nepalese government, a proposed law requiring women under the age of 40 to get permission from a male guardian before travelling alone to the Gulf states and Africa for the first time is a means of protecting them.
But to hundreds of Nepali women who have taken to the streets this past week in protest , the law smacks of a regressive, patriarchal attitude they say reflects poor gender equality in the Hindu-majority country of 29 million. Nepal ’s women are less literate, have less access to health care and have limited representation in public life compared with men, according to UN statistics. ....

Christian social worker Chinimaya Blon ran an orphanage for poor and abandoned children in Dhankuta district of eastern Nepal for five years from 2011-16 until it was shut down following the government’s refusal to renew its license.
She took 14 children to the capital Kathmandu, where pastor Hari Tamang offered them shelter on the premises of his church. ....

Kathmandu:
Nepal has re-opened its border with India after keeping it closed for months due to COVID-19 pandemic but Indian citizens will still need permission to cross the border via land, according to the Nepal Home Ministry.
The Ministry of Home Affairs eased the restrictions, allowing cross-border movement with conditions.
We have ordered to open borders from Thursday following some new measures. Indian and other nationals would require to take a prior permit from the Home Ministry while a Nepali can enter by registering their health details, Chandra Bahadur Budha, spokesperson for the Home Ministry, said. ....

Kathmandu [Nepal], January 29 (ANI): Nepal has re-opened its border with India after keeping it closed for months due to COVID-19 pandemic but the Indians will need permission to cross the border via land, according to the Nepal Home Ministry.
The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday eased the restriction allowing the cross border movement with conditions.
We have ordered to open borders from Thursday following some new measures. Indian and other nationals would require to take a prior permit from the Home Ministry while a Nepali can enter by registering their health details, Chandra Bahadur Budha, Spokesperson for the Home Ministry confirmed to ANI. ....
