It was in Fall 1995 that I first was introduced to the gospel singing Sanders Family of “up near Siler City, North Carolina,” in a production of Smoke on the Mountain at Nashville's venerable Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre. In 2023, the family returns again, as if by magic or perhaps accompanied by flights of angels, in a warmly nostalgic, sweetly sentimental and altogether lovely production from Studio Tenn playing through April 2 at the historic sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Franklin, which stands in quite nicely for the First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, on a Saturday night in 1938. ....

Area venues start to reopen after pandemic closed them down


“When are you going to open?” they asked Gutiérrez, general manager and producer.
Gutiérrez finally has an answer.
On June 19, the long-running dinner theater on Stagecoach Trail will reopen with “9 to 5.”
It’s the same musical that the theater closed down abruptly on March 19, 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic stopped live entertainment worldwide.
“This is the most people we have had in here since then,” an excited Gutiérrez said as he and Director Mitchel Sommers greeted the returning cast for the first rehearsal on an evening in early May.
It’s one sign that doors to some live entertainment venues have begun to creak open slowly and cautiously. ....
