New book chronicles the lives of Scotland's heroic lighthouse keepers

Rising 138 feet high from its rocky foundation, relentlessly pounded by waves that surge from the depths of the Minch, Skerryvore lighthouse has provided a beacon of hope for those in peril on the sea for almost 180 years.
Built using rosy-coloured granite quarried from the Ross of Mull and shaped into 4300 blocks by a team of 80 stonemasons, it is Scotland’s tallest lighthouse; as elegant in design as it is dangerous to approach.
For years, supplies arrived by boat. A perilous journey that meant travelling 11 miles southwest of Tiree to bob above the treacherous reef while essentials were hauled onto the jagged rock and dragged along a rusting iron slipway.

Coastal car parking charges to increase later this summer

Members of East Lothian Council’s cabinet approved the plans at a virtual meeting earlier today.
The move will mean daily charges will go from £2 to £2.50, with a season ticket rising from £40 annually to £50.
Councillor Jim Goodfellow told the cabinet meeting that the fee was cheaper than an ice cream for visitors to the council-operated car parks.
He told members: “To put it in perspective, people pay more for their ice cream than they pay to park.”
The minority Labour administration cabinet unanimously supported the increase in the charges.
Councillor Norman Hampshire, depute leader, who chaired the meeting, said that visitors to East Lothian’s 40 miles of coastline expected quality and that needed income.

Fishermen rescued on first trip of the year by Dunbar RNLI

A FIRST fishing trip of the year was cut short for two anglers, who needed rescued by Dunbar's RNLI crew earlier today (Saturday).
UK Coastguard called on the town's inshore lifeboat (ILB) at 9.30am after the crew of 'Gone Fishin' phoned for help when they were left stranded after engine failure a mile north of Barns Ness.
The two friends, from Penicuik, had set out shortly before 7am for a day’s fishing.
The ILB launched a few minutes after the call came in and volunteers were on scene at 10am.
After setting up a tow and supplying the anglers with buoyancy aids, the ILB crew towed the vessel back to Dunbar and guided it to a safe berth by 10.30am.

Vandals paint over double yellow lines in bizarre incident

VANDALS have covered recently created double yellow lines with their own black paint.
East Lothian Council put the double yellow lines down on the road between Whitesands and Barns Ness, east of Dunbar, as part of a traffic regulation order (TRO).
However, in a bizarre case of vandalism, someone has come along and covered a section of the yellow lines in a passing place with black paint.
A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council told the Courier that it was a criminal offence and the matter had been reported to Police Scotland.
She confirmed that the lines would be reinstated.
Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101.

Dr Jan Bondeson: Some of Dunbar's historic landmarks

IN EDWARDIAN times, Dunbar was a good deal more fashionable than it is today.
Tourists came from as far as London to enjoy the beaches, the walks and the nearby golf courses; the Dunbar hotels, which today operate under straitened circumstances, enjoyed a roaring trade during the summer months.
The celebrated North Berwick postcard artist Reginald Phillimore fully approved of Dunbar and often went there to paint the picturesque scenery
There has been a castle overlooking Dunbar Harbour since early Medieval times, several times besieged, repaired and extended.
Its finest hour came in 1338, when ‘Black Agnes’ the Countess of Dunbar and a small troop of soldiers successfully withstood a siege from superior English forces.

Barns Ness suggested as site for dedicated motorhome car park

DISCUSSIONS are taking place which could see a dedicated coastal car park created for motorhomes and campervans.
East Lothian Council has entered into talks with Tarmac, which manages the nearby cement works, regarding a site at Barns Ness, to the south-east of Dunbar.
The move comes as a record number of visitors have been flocking to East Lothian’s beauty spots – with a report to the council estimating a total of four million last year, 30 per cent more than a normal year, and what was described as a “motorhome invasion”.
In the wake of this influx, East Lothian Council has launched a Land Management Review, with suggestions including a ban on overnight parking at coastal car parks as well as a dedicated coastal car park for motorhomes.
