On Dec. 16, I reported to the Montefiore Medical Center complex on Kossuth Avenue. After months of semi-isolation in Putnam County, I encountered a city bursting with masked people. It shocked me to see such a vibrant street life, and a hint of anxiety crept in. The neighborhood was hopping, as was the Montefiore parking garage, where the valet operation had cars double-parked throughout most of its six levels.
I walked by one clinic where the line extended out the door onto the sidewalk. I found the elevator to take to the third floor COVID vaccine unit.
Surprise!
I was in my first elevator with others since mid-March. Back in pre-COVID days, I might have made eye contact and struck up a conversation. But now we each retreated to a corner of the elevator as I imagined how far apart six feet was.
