Due to a weather forecast indicating that temperatures over the next couple of days are expected to be very hot and humid, Connecticut’s extreme hot weather protocol will be activated effective at noon today and remaining in effect through 8pm on Thursday. While enacted, state agencies and municipalities will coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 to make sure that information regarding cooling centers is available statewide. Anyone in need of a place to get out of the heat can locate their nearest cooling center by calling 2-1-1 or viewing the list online at 211ct.org.

The Danbury Fire Department responded to a single family home Thursday morning just after 10, on Aunt Hack Road. When they arrived, the flames were intense, but firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire in under 30 minutes. Nobody there was hurt, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries. The American Red Cross is assisting the occupants. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A Ridgefield woman who investigators say tried to help a relative die via a drug overdose, is now facing charges including second degree attempted manslaughter. 62 year old Katherine Bleach originally turned herself in on a warrant back in July. The incident took place in April when police said she attempted to assist a 65-year-old man in ending his life. Her pretrial hearing had originally been scheduled for Monday in state Superior Court in Danbury, but it was continued until September 7.

Tuesday was the first day of school for Danbury students, and there are a lot of them this year. More than 12,300 students in grades PRE-K through 12 returned to class yesterday in Danbury. There were lots of new faces among students, and also some new faces among the teaching staff. By the end of the next 180 days or so, they all will get to know one another better. This year, there are about 100 new teachers, and they actually began the year a couple of weeks ago with orientation.

In Brookfield, police seized more than 50 pounds of marijuana from a residential property on Oak Lane. It all comes following a long and exhaustive investigation into illegal narcotics sales at that location that led up to a search warrant being executed there with assistance from the Danbury Police Department. Illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, firearms, and ammunition estimated to be worth almost $217,000 were seized, along with about $22,000 in cash. Police say one person was taken into custody, but no other details were released as the investigation remains active.
