For over 30 years, The Tybee beach bum parade has marked the unofficial start of summer. But because of COVID-19, it once again won’t be happening. At least not officially.“I approached the city in February. And the city manager and mayor said they didn’t feel that things would be comfortable enough to issue a permit for a May parade,” organizer Jack Boylston said.But organizers have a plan. A simple parade. Without the usual waterworks and activities. “This Friday at 6:15, we’re going to have a tacky Tybee tour caravan. Not an official parade. Not sponsored by the beach bums or the city,” Boylston said“If that’s all it turns out to be, then great. But we have to now prepare for the bad things that can happen with that. Completely unintentional on their part,” said city manager Shawn Gillen Gillen said the city just found out about this Monday night. But he’s hopeful that it all goes well. And organizers do as well. As this could impact their chances for a permit next year. “C U N 22. We’ll be back in 2022. But we better make sure that this year there’s no bad things going on to affect our permit from coming around,” Boylston said.The caravan will be only be going on the parade route to greet people on the island. There will be no water guns. They don’t want people or cars being sprayed with water.
