NEWMARKET is warming up for OsKars Night in two weeks time and to get into the feel of the staging a variety concert takes place in Cultúrlann, Newmarket on this Sunday night at 8pm. Cast members of Forrest Gump from the Newmarket GAA Oskars are promoting the concert featuring an all star line up of Meadhbh Walsh, Elle Marie O’ Dwyer, Alan Finn, Ríona Sheahan, Newmarket Girls National School, Cullen Ballad Group along with the O’Riordan family from Freemount Comhaltas Meelin native Meadhbh Walsh has returned from her second tour of the US and a wonderful sell-out solo gig in the INEC, Killarney. A regular performer with the Whistling Donkeys, Meadhbh came to fame during Covid through Facebook and won the hearts of online audiences all over the world. Having completed her degree in UCC, Meadhbh is concentrating on her music career. After recording three albums to date, she is back in the studio recording more music, including self penned original material. Freemount woman Elle Marie O’Dwyer is no stranger to the Cultúrlann stage. With numerous All-Ireland accolades under her belt, Elle Marie began her journey as a recording artist in 2012 and has followed up with four albums to her credit. Following her completion of a Masters in Irish Traditional Music Performance, Elle Marie also published a collection of traditional songs for young singers. She has toured and performed in venues all over the world, sang in Croke Park, Áras an Uachtarán and graced the stage with legends The High Kings, Seán Keane, Cherish the Ladies, Maura O’Connell, Liam O’Connor and many more. Part of the Forrest Gump cast in the Newmarket GAA OsKars. Elle Marie is also lead vocalist with the world renowned show ‘Gaelic Roots’, based in Killarney. Alan Finn, leader of the Shandrum Céilí band, is an accordion and fiddle player from Buttevant. Holder of many All-Ireland titles, which Alan not only won as leader of the Shandrum Céilí Band but also in solo, duet and trio competitions. Over the years, Alan has toured Europe and America, most notably playing for former USA President Barack Obama in the White House on St. Patrick’s Day. Alan has coached his students, grúpaí ceoil and céilí bands to multiple All-Ireland successes. The O’Riordan family from Kiskeam are members of Freemount Comhaltas; Aoife, Shane and Colm, their tunes and songs appealing. Meanwhile, the Cullen GAA ballad group will be just back from an appearance at the Munster final of Senior Scór in Newport, Co. Tipperary on Saturday night. Performing are Katie O’Sullivan, Anna Moynihan, Gemma Nagle and Emily Nagle. Adding to the Newmarket concert is Ríona Sheahan, an accomplished singer and musician from Lismire, while the Newmarket Girls National School performance is sure to receive a warm reaction. Newmarket GAA host ‘A Night at the OsKars’ on Friday, April 26 in the Charleville Park Hotel. Members of the club, along with friends from surrounding villages and towns, have been perfecting their acting skills and producing short films to be shown at an Oscars-style event in the Charleville venue. The shortened films recorded include Michael Collins, The Field, The Snapper, Derry Girls, Man About Dog and Sister Act. This Sunday night’s concert in Cultúrlann, Newmarket is organised by the cast of Forrest Gump, with funds raised on the night supporting Newmarket GAA.
