were hurt and four later committed suicide. neil? >> neil: chad pergram, thank you. to bob cusack, the hill editor in chief. democrats are describing this as a chance to blow the roof off the house. that's a high mark there. what do they have that we don't know about? >> well, that's the big question, neil, as far as what news is going to come out of this. in politics, as you know, neil, you try to lower expectations. that comment there from the democrat from maryland who knows, he's on the committee. he's raising expectations. they'll have a lot of information that we have never read, never seen before. so that's one to watch. with the benghazi hearing, nothing new came out of it. that was widely seen an not important. what are you going to tell the american people tonight?
people like matt gaetz and others tell on fox news, that republicans are being locked out of the room. in fact you have republican members of the committees in the rooms with you at all times. what was their reaction to their fellow republicans invading their jobs there? >> well, lawrence, first, you make a very important point. republicans are in that room. they get to ask questions. they get equal time as the democrats. by the way, in the whole benghazi hearing, they had the the same depositions in the scif that were not public. so it's the height of hypocrisy for republicans to complain. i don't want to reveal the individual's name, but i went up to one of the individuals and said oh, were you there in the protest? he said absolutely not. i follow the rules. there are a lot of republicans who don't want to be affiliated with those 23 members. and privately, you do have republicans saying that some of the things are indefensible. they may not be at the point of coming for impeachment, but they don't want to hang their
more struck by the 170 or so republicans that refused to have anything to do with it, knowing that donald trump was watching and taking attendance at it. but it also is part of the lie, that demonstration is part of the lie that donald trump is telling on fox news, matt gates and others tell on fox news that republican members are being locked out of the room. in fact, you have republican members on the committees in the rooms with you at all times. what was their reaction to their fellow republicans invading their jobs there? >> well, lawrence, first, you make a very important point. republicans are in that room. they get to ask questions. they get equal time as the democrats. by the way, in the whole benghazi hearing, they had the same depositions in the skiff that were not public. it's the hype ofheight of hypocrisy. i said were you taid absolutely. i follow the rules.
>> i'm glad they did it. you know, again the dems have been doing everything behind closed doors and in secret and so it's about time that somebody made a very bold stand, which i guess is a sit-in, what he did and it was great and the point was well taken and i think that because now i'm hearing the dems have agreed in three weeks that they're going to open these up to the public. >> so hallie, a little bit of background here. we have seen past hearings that have at least in their initial phases started out behind closed doors. we saw that during the benghazi hearing, for example. so again, house democrats signaling that ultimately they will open up these hearings for public view. allies of the president say they are concerned to some extent about this strategy and want to see the president firing back on substance and why he disagrees with bill taylor's testimony. bill taylor, of course, earlier this week drawing a link between withholding that aid to ukraine and launching those
