I used to get annoyed when I saw Irish people write about living in Berlin. Quietly, I grudged them their happiness. There were the exceptions - those self-aware enough to avoid the cliches, or to subvert them - but it was hard not to dislike anyone fortunate enough to escape to a city of affordable rentals, delicious cheap food and world-renowned night clubs.
