Vehicle crash at ORNL portal Oakridger At 6:27 a.m. Friday, Oak Ridge police investigated a single-vehicle crash with injuries at the west end entrance portal to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The driver of the vehicle, Susan-Karen George-Lopinto, 60, of Indian Orchard, Mass., crashed into a fixed object just inside the ORNL property, according to a city of Oak Ridge news release. She was taken to Methodist Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. Motorists who are subscribed to the Oak Ridge Police Department’s Nixle alert system were notified to avoid state Highway 95 at Bethel Valley Road because of the crash.
Special to The Oak Ridger The city of Oak Ridge invites the public to participate in a series of virtual public input sessions on the design of a new Oak Ridge gateway sign that visitors and residents will pass on their way into the city. The sign will be placed on the island between South Illinois Avenue (state Highway 62) and Bethel Valley Road as drivers come off the Solway bridge heading toward the city and exit to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Y-12, a city news release stated. There will be two virtual sessions held on Zoom, where people can join and view the designs, ask questions and leave their feedback verbally or in the chat. The two meetings will be audio- and video-recorded and subtitles will appear on screen for those who are hearing-impaired.

(Photo by John Huotari/Oak Ridge Today) The section of South Illinois Avenue between Bethel Valley Road and Lafayette Drive remains closed after a crash knocked over a high-voltage transmission tower on Friday afternoon, the Oak Ridge Police Department said Saturday morning. The ORPD posted a roadway update at 10 a.m. Saturday. Officers advised drivers to seek alternate routes and expect delays. Police expect the road to remain closed throughout the evening. Both northbound and southbound lanes are blocked.
