War hero, pianist wife leave $1.3 million to Gale Free Library Community Content Special to The Landmark HOLDEN   Carrol “Bill” W. Bailey fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II and earned a Bronze Star. His wife, Betty Blunt Bailey, was a classically trained pianist who played with some of the most celebrated performers of the day. After the war, they settled down to a long and quiet life in Holden. Betty died in 1997 and Bill in 2013, but their memory lives on through two trusts, worth a total of $1.3 million, that recently passed to Holden’s Gale Free Library.
