Raina, Jamalpur, Galsi: The violence in Kolkata began right after the West Bengal assembly election results were declared on 2 May.
Abhijit Sarkar, a 35-year-old BJP worker and an idol maker in North Kolkata, was among the first victims.
His older brother Biswajit Sarkar told ThePrint that Abhijit was allegedly dragged out of his house in the afternoon by a group of around 30 to 35 people, including women, and past the canine shelter and small veterinary unit that he ran for ailing dogs picked off the streets.
“The attackers used the cable wires to make a noose around his neck and dragged him through this alley (in front of his house); three of his pet dogs went with him,” Biswajit said. “My brother and his dogs were beaten to death. They assaulted me as well but their target was Abhijit as he was a known BJP worker.”

Violence, but not communal: BJP pushes misinformation campaign in Bengal

On Sunday night, within hours of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s spectacular return to power, a group of alleged TMC supporters attacked the resident of Kamal Mandal. Mandal is the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party unit for booth 171 in Jagatdal constituency of North 24 Parganas district; the TMC won the Jagatdal seat on Sunday.
Mandal and his wife were beaten with bamboo sticks. His 80-year-old mother, Shobharani, tried to intervene but was hit too. All three were later hospitalised and Shobharani succumbed to her injuries.
At Hooghly’s Khanakul, whose assembly seat the BJP won, alleged BJP supporters attacked the residence of a TMC worker, Debu Pramanik, in Nasibpur on Sunday night. They beat him and returned the next day to thrash him again. Pramanik was taken to a hospital where he died.
