Nearly three years ago, the Bank of Canada announced a plan to remove from the $5 bill the face of Sir Wilfrid Laurier the only French-Canadian prime minister on a banknote and replace him with someone else from the country's past. The process has since stalled.
The Bank of Canada has officially whittled down the shortlist for the newest version of Canada's $5 bill to eight candidates all of which are prominent historic Canadian figures. Sir Wilfred Laurier, who served as Canada's first-ever Francophone prime minister from 1896 to 1911 is the current face of the $5 note.
