SA sees spike in recent air crashes

South Africa reported 14 air crashes in January 2021 alone, the highest number since Black October 2008.
EIGHT PEOPLE DIED IN FOURTEEN AIR CRASHES
The Director of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), Poppy Khoza, says four of these January aircraft accidents were fatal with eight people losing their lives.
According to SACAA, this is the highest number of accidents since what has become known as Black October 2008 in which 20 accidents occurred, killing 26 people.  
MORE AIR CRASHES DESPITE LOCKDOWN
Preliminary investigations into the accidents reveal the causes include human error by flight crew, followed “by aircraft operations and then mechanical or engine failure”. Khoza says the causes of the crashes are nothing new, so she asks why are they reoccurring. “Could it be a matter of attitude and not necessarily aptitude?”

“We were leaden-footed for weeks, to the point where each step meant a determined effort,” Miss Goring recalled. “It also was very difficult to remember any simple thing, even for five minutes.”
Miss Goring was describing the period of her convalescence after the 1918 flu pandemic, which she lived through in her native South Africa. Her memories form part of a collection published by South African historian Howard Phillips on the centenary of that disaster. It’s not the only one. Another collection published around the same time by New Zealand historian Geoffrey Rice is also littered with references to long-term symptoms of that flu—from “loss of muscular energy” to “nervous complications.” Some convalescents, recalled a Dr. Jamieson who worked at a hospital in Nelson, on New Zealand’s South Island, “passed through a period of apathy and depression,” or experienced tremor, restlessness, or sleeplessness.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) forcibly expelled the Tamil-speaking Muslim people from the Northern Province in October 1990. Within a few days the Muslims were chased out of their homeland where they had lived for many, many centuries. This year 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of this cruel, inhuman episode in the history of Tamil-Muslim relations in Sri Lanka.
The mass expulsion of Muslims from the north in 1990 was a human catastrophe. Uprooting a people from their habitat at gun point and driving them away after depriving them of their cash and jewellery was despicable and unpardonable. I have often written about this tragedy in the past. I now intend to focus upon this mass expulsion on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
