To a remote corner of south africa, close to the borders of botswana and namibia, to a place called the hakskeen pan, on the southern edge of the giant kalahari desert. So here we are, we have come to the hakskeen pan. Beautiful, flat, miles and miles of dried mud, this lake bed, surrounded by these low, dark, red brown hills. A stunningly beautiful place. We are 800 metres above sea level here, a lake bed of mud and salt that floods briefly, once every year or two, and those white tents on the lake edge, well, think of them as ground control. There is something a bit mission to mars like about this whole project. Imagine trying to do something as complicated as this in a climate like this. Today, it is about 35 degrees centigrade.
