Five Stars of the Cub Farm, 5/19/21: Morel, Weber, Bain, Alcantara, Gallardo

Five: Mass Reliever Lovefest
I don’t have time for full player-by-player breakdowns, but I’ll run through the guys that really helped their teams yesterday by level.
Iowa: 4.2 scoreless innings from a combination of Brad Wieck, Adam Morgan and Jason Adam. Morgan’s up to five scoreless innings with Iowa, which really makes me wonder when the opt-out date off his minor league contract might be.
Tennessee: Really nice job by Manny Rodriguez to get five outs across two innings with less than ideal circumstances.
South Bend: My tweet left off southpaw Brandon Hughes, who was brilliant in this one! He, Burl Carraway, and Eury Ramos kept Bain’s shutout in tact. Ramos up to 98 mph on the stadium gun in the closer role.

Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 6, Nationals 3

I hate to start with Zach Davies, but let’s get that part out of the way first. Davies wasn’t actually that bad tonight, surrendering 3 earned runs over 5.0 IP, with a TON of grounders (I counted 10) and just one walk. But the same old storylines persist: He’s not striking anybody out and he’s walking on eggshells as soon as he faces an opponent for a third time.
He did put down two successful sac bunts (both of which led to runs), but the fifth inning ended with a ton of hard contact and the sixth inning began with even more (a 109.3 MPH Starlin Castro homer and a 103.8 MPH single).

David Bote Has Been Terribly Unlucky So Far This Year - But Does That Really Change Anything?

I’m not here to try to convince you David Bote has actually been good this year, or that he has fulfilled the promise of the job he won in Spring Training. I am certainly not here to tell you that the Cubs should do anything but keep on starting Nico Hoerner at second base most days. Right now, with apologies to Bote for the wonky way things played out, you simply have to keep Hoerner most days at second base. (And you need to keep Matt Duffy in there at third base, too.)
But what I did want to share is some context for Bote’s rough season numbers, even after last night’s big homer. And I want to reiterate that I still think there’s a very good bat in there, with the versatility to contribute at multiple positions, and the Cubs were right to

Honorable Mention: Cam Sanders, Peyton Remy, Adam Laskey
Solid but unspectacular starts from all three of the guys on the bump below the Triple-A level last night. We profiled Sanders last week, mentioned Remy as a guy that has climbed some up prospect rankings, and recently did a Twitter scouting report on Laskey (who my eyes have liked better than his numbers suggest so far).
Only two outings so far this year, but if you're looking for the first Cubs prospect who pretty clearly "popped" during the shutdown, it's this dude. Went from Low-A in 2019 with so-so numbers to Double-A this year with crazy early success (and scouting reports). https://t.co/1fbU4KsV6f

All the Singles, Duffy's Good Days, Baserunning, Starters, and Other Cubs Bullets

To all the mothers out there, a very happy and relaxing day to you. For the mother in my household, it’s gonna be a chill one, which means I got the kiddos under my arms as I write these Bullets. I will do my best!
•   Javy Báez left yesterday’s game early due to back tightness, and I wonder if we’ll see him get the day off today (thus giving him back-to-back days off with tomorrow’s off-day):
Ross said Javy left game today because of back tightness but sounded like he didn't believe it was serious. Tomorrow's status to be determined by temps/precautions as well as how much better Javy feels. #Cubs

Fans Are Back, Beating the Celtics AGAIN (lol), Winnings vs. Lottery Odds, and Other Bulls Bullets

The Girlfriend and I were given some tickets to last night’s Milwaukee Bucks game, so rather than let those go to waste, we hit up the Fiserv Forum.
We had a great time, no doubt, but I’d be lying if I said I could tell you what happened in that game. Like the obsessed man I am, I had the Bulls battle with the Celtics running on my phone practically the entire time. Sorry not sorry.
•   So do you think the Bulls were happy to have fans back in the building?
It was actually really kind of nice. I think there was some noise boosted in with them, but it was great. I thought you could definitely hear the crowd. It was good to have fans back in our place … I think the guys enjoyed it, more importantly. – Billy Donovan

Props to Duffy, Bryant, Tepera, Báez, Kimbrel, and Other Cubs Bullets

I’ve said it before, but I’ll sure say it again: when a Cubs game goes deep and keeps me up late before an early morning, it’s ALWAYS easier to shake off the rust when it was a win. I got very little sleep, but I feel like I could chop down redwoods with my bare hands this morning.
•   What a great series, and coming at a great time. Fundamentally change your perception of what the 2021 Cubs are or will be? No, I don’t think you can go that far. But I think last night’s win, and this series sweep, should underscore what has always been

Thompson's Good and Informative Starting Debut, Bote's D, Steele's Celebration, and Other Cubs Bullets

Thompson’s Good and Informative Starting Debut, Bote’s D, Steele’s Celebration, and Other Cubs Bullets
I started feeling pretty sick as yesterday went on, and by the later innings last night, I had to duck out – so thanks to Michael for finishing up the game coverage, which turned out to be pretty dang fun. Jealous. He’s now covered three Cubs games this year: two huge blowout wins and then last night’s thrilling fun. Must be nice. Thanks, also, for his help chipping in on some of these Bullets …
•   When a young Cubs pitcher makes his debut (or, in this case, his starting debut), especially at Wrigley Field, and especially against a club like the Dodgers, I’m really only looking for two things in that first outing: (1) does the moment seem too big for him, and (2) does he look like he generally has multiple big-league-caliber pitches. Yes, getting results is good – but that’s ultimately just a one-game sample, and we know how baseball goes on that front. Yes, getting strikeouts and limiting walks and all that stuff is good, too, but again, it’s one game against a group that hasn’t seen a guy before and may not have been scouted extensively yet (especially this year!). So, for me, I’m trying to evaluate the makeup for the moment, and the individual pitches.

Wake Up and Watch the Cubs Sweep the Doubleheader – Something They Haven’t Done in a Long Time
Although the first game was just seven innings, the Cubs did the right thing to allow the score to be tied a couple times in the second game, forcing nine innings. Thus, it was totally a
real doubleheader. And the Cubs swept it!
Turns out, it’s been a really long time since they’ve done that, and a really REALLY long time since they’ve done it against a team like the Dodgers:
