Peacemaker's First Appearance in Fightin' Five #40 Up for Auction Posted on Mainstream comic book characters seem to enjoy a special kind of immortality.  Not only do they rarely die (and stay dead), but many of them don't fade away either. Even the most obscure characters are just one reboot (or new art team, or film/tv appearance, or video game) away from catching fire. Such is the case for current DC Comics character The Peacemaker. The character has risen from his humble beginnings as a backup story in obscure special ops / paramilitary action comic Fightin' Five from publisher Charlto...

The Fearless Science Fiction Amazing Stories Art of Robert Fuqua The Fearless Science Fiction Amazing Stories Art of Robert Fuqua Posted on The science fiction pulps of the 1920s and 1930s constitute one of the defining moments of the genre. The artists who illustrated those pulps influenced how we think of science fiction and even science itself to the present day. Even the best-known names who worked in that era — artists like Frank R. The True Crime Roots of Fox Feature's Phantom Lady The True Crime Roots of Fox Feature's Phantom Lady Posted on Issue for issue, Fox Features Syndicate's 1947-1949 run of the title Phantom Lady is one of the most sought after titles in American vintage comics history.  It's 12 issues of gorgeously delineated covers and art from Matt Baker, Jack Kamen, and others.  Countless articles have been written about Baker and his talents — his sure-handed composition and inking skills, his ability as a storyteller, and of course his beautifully-drawn women. I'd recommend Matt Baker, the Art of...

Fiction House's War Birds Comic and Operation Vagabond Fiction House's War Birds Comic and Operation Vagabond Posted on War Birds was a short-lived, three-issue air combat series from mainstay Golden Age comic book publisher Fiction House.  The debut issue has no date month but was on the stands at the same time as August 1952 cover-dated Fiction House titles, and its Library of Congress copyright date places its release around July 7, 1952. A seemingly obscure, forgotten title from the waning days of the Golden Age, War Birds #1 gives us a fascinating hook into some likewise nearly-forgot...

Soldier, Writer, Spy: Author John le Carré Passes Away at Age 89 Posted on Prolific author David Cornwell, better known by his pen name John le Carré, passed away after a brief illness (not COVID-19 related) in Cornwall, UK, on the evening of December 12, 2020, at the age of 89.  He is survived by his wife Jane and his four sons.  As his agent and longtime friend, Jonny Geller of The Curtis Brown Group said in a statement, "John le Carre was an undisputed giant of English literature. He defined the Cold War era and fearlessly spoke truth to power in the decades that followed.  His wor...
