The first day of the Battle of the Somme sent hundreds of Newfoundland's famed Blue Puttees straight into the maw of machine gun fire that wiped out most of the regiment. Of more than 800 soldiers who went over the top that day, just 68 answered roll call the next morning. It was just one of the most horrific First World War campaigns that still haunt Canada's easternmost province.
