New herbal joint health blend debuts promising functional benefits
A new herbal formula for joint health has debuted on the market to compete with old category standbys glucosamine and chondroitin. The Indian/American company behind it says its vegan positioning and clinical backing sets it apart.

Cardiospermum halicacabum,
Curcuma longa.
The
Cardiospermum halicacabum (also known as Balloon vine) fraction is an extract of the aerial parts of the plant, which the company says has been standardized for a combination of hydroxy flavone derivatives along with saponins and triterpenoids. The

Probi probes the probiotic-bone link in university team up

Sweden’s probiotics firm Probi continues its collaborative mood by striking an agreement with an Australian-based university to pursue further insights into how probiotics promote bone health.
The agreement with Melbourne-based La Trobe University reiterates Probi’s efforts into what influences bone strength, particularly in later years and where the gut microbiome fits into bone metabolism, microarchitecture and density.
“Recent scientific evidence has consistently highlighted the important role of the gut microbiome on bone health,” explains research group leader Dr George Moschonis at La Trobe University,
“Considering these breakthrough discoveries, we are excited to contribute our strengths into further extending the current knowledge and produce additional high-quality research evidence that will shed more light on the effectiveness of probiotics in the reduction of bone loss,” adds Dr Moschonis, an Associate Professor at the university’s Department of Rehabilitation, Nutrition and Sport.

Study signals need for vitamin k2 with statin use, says firm

Study signals need for vitamin k2 with statin use, says firm
Norway-based vitamin K2 supplier NattoPharma has highlighted new evidence connecting statin use to increased cardiovascular risk which it says further proves the need for Vitamin K2 supplementation in these patients.
The international supplier of MenaQ7 (vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7) spotlights a newly published cross-sectional clinical study published in
Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences which adds to evidence that statins, a regularly prescribed cholesterol medication, may enhance calcium accumulation in the arterial wall by inhibiting vitamin K-dependent proteins involved in vascular protection.
Statins are first‐line drugs in the prevention and treatment of established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Paradoxically, intensive statin therapy has been shown to increase vascular calcification and accelerate its progression however the clinical significance of statin-induced calcification is a matter of controversy and the underlying mechanisms are still to be elucidated.

Study finds collagen peptides reduce knee joint discomfort

Tests carried out on collagen peptides suggests they may play a role in reducing the intensity of knee joint pain in healthy adults, potentially delaying the onset of chronic degenerative joint diseases.
In a German-Austrian research collaboration, the team found a five gram(g) oral daily dosage of Gelita’s Fortigel bioactive collagen peptides had a
“positive effect” on knee joint pain during activity when compared with placebo.
“I welcome the new addition to the portfolio of studies,” says Dr Stephan Hausmanns, Gelita’s Vice President for Health & Nutrition.
“Fortigel is the most clinically-studied bioactive collagen peptide for 30 years.
