Bernice Cobbs stepped down as superintendent of Franklin County Public Schools on June 30. She is retiring after a 25 years in education, a second career that started in her mid-30s when she made the decision to become a teacher. Cobbs was the first woman and the first Black educator to lead the rural school division.

When Bernice Cobbs became Franklin County's superintendent of schools in 2020 her starting pay was $125,000. The new schools leader starting July 1 will make $156,000.

The county School Board is making plans to start a search for her successor.
