800,000 Half Price Domestic Airfares to Aid Australian Tourism Industry

800,000 Half Price Domestic Airfares to Aid Australian Tourism Industry
The federal government is subsidising half the cost of 800,000 eligible airfare tickets for domestic travellers as part of a $1.2 billion support package for the struggling tourism industry.
The program, scheduled to run from April to July, is the next step in economic support for the tourism industry after JobKeeper ends in March.
“This is our ticket to recovery,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement. “This package will take more tourists to our hotels and cafes, taking tours and exploring our backyard.”
Qantas and Virgin both welcomed the news, with Qantas planning to put 550,000 total eligible tickets on sale during the period, or 32,000 per week.

Why border closures won't end just yet

A $1.2 billion program encouraging Australians to travel interstate won't necessarily mark the end of border shutdowns, a tourism expert warns.
Some 800,000 half-price airfares to holiday hot spots offered to Australian travellers in a billion-dollar federal government bid to revive the nation's struggling tourism industry.
The discount will initially apply to interstate flights to 13 key regions, including tourism-dependent parts of Queensland and Western Australia, where notoriously strict border rules hit particularly hard.
Despite the massive investment in encouraging Australians to holiday interstate, tourism expert Dr David Beirman said he didn't think the days of border closures were necessarily behind us.
"It would be nice to think that this package will signal the end to state border closures. Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic and state government responses to it have a life of their own," Dr Beirman, from the University of Technology, Sydney, told news.com.au.

Labour curbs seen costing Malaysia's oil palm industry $3b in annual revenue

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's palm oil sector stands to lose an estimated 11.83 billion ringgit ($2.89 billion) in revenue for each year that pandemic curbs restrict the supply of workers, an industry grouping said on Monday.
The world's second largest palm producer relies on foreigners for 70% of its plantation workforce, but the flow of workers from nations such as Indonesia and Bangladesh has dried up since border closures in the middle of March last year.
"The labour-intensive plantation sector has been registering a net outflow of foreign workers, especially over the past one year, as and when their employment contracts expire," the grouping of 12 industry bodies said in a joint statement.
