An Important Era in Rising Sun: The Railroad Arrives

On December 22, 1860 the first engine, “Rockdale,” pulled into Oxford, Pennsylvania.
By December of 1865, the P & B Central had extended its line to Rising Sun. On Christmas Day of that year an excursion train ran from the Cecil County town to Oxford, Pennsylvania, for the benefit of the Presbyterian Church. Cars did not travel the route regularly, though, because the terminus had neither a turntable, depot or water station.
The Cecil Whig (3/34/1866) published a letter from a Rising Sun resident, who related the changes that had occurred in his town since the advent of the railroad.
Mr. Editor: — An important era has taken place in our village. From being a quiet, old-fashioned finished Maryland village, we have been changed into an important railroad terminus, having daily connections with Philadelphia. As a result, property has become in great demand and prices have increased enormously. Thus at the vendue of Mr. Cooper, a few weeks since, the old tavern stand sold for over seven thousand dollars, with only two acres of land attached. Building lots, 150 feet deep, sold for $3 dollars a foot; front and corner lots, in public places, double this price. Two new warehouses had gone up since the railroad has been opened, and grain is now bought and manures and fertilizers sold after the most improved fashion. We have now a daily train of cars for Philadelphia, leaving here at 5 ½ o’clock in the morning and returning at 8 o’clock in the evening, giving passengers some six hours in the city. Also, a market train twice a week. A number of new buildings are underway in the village and several more are expected to go up in the Spring.

Verizon alleges that White Deer zoning board violated law in denying its cell tower construction application

WILLIAMSPORT – Verizon is pursuing legal action against a municipal zoning board in North Central Pennsylvania, for allegedly violating federal law in denying it the opportunity to build a cell phone communications tower.
Cellco Partnership (doing business as “Verizon Wireless”) of Basking Ridge, N.J. filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on Dec. 28 versus the White Deer Township Zoning Hearing Board, of New Columbia.
Verizon asserts it was given authorization by the Federal Communications Commission to operate a wireless communications system in Union Township and that in the White Deer Township area, there is currently a lack of strong signal strength and cellular service.

Exploding tea kettle update: South Carolina woman's lawsuit is settled in Philly court

PHILADELPHIA – A lawsuit from a South Carolina woman who claimed she was scalded by an exploding tea kettle manufactured by a Bucks County company has been settled.
Lisa Maseng of Columbia, S.C. initially filed suit in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas on Aug. 19 versus Lenox Corporation of Bristol and John Doe defendants 1-10.
The case was later removed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on Sept. 15, based upon grounds of diversity of citizenship and the amount of damages in controversy.
The alleged incident took place Oct. 6, 2018, when Maseng was boiling water for tea. She said the Lenox Profile 2.5 Quart Stainless Steel Whistling Tea Kettle was in the same condition as when she bought it new at a Tuesday Morning store in Richland County, South Carolina.
