Edwards County Treasurer Debbie Smith says the due date for the first installment of 2020 payable 2021 Real Estate Taxes is November 30th, and the second installment is due by December 30th. The total extension this year is $6,276,962. Last year's was $6,443,317.14. Payment may be made in person, by mail, or in the drop box in front of the cell tower on the northeast side of the courthouse. People can also pay online with a credit or debit card at govtechtaxpro.com, though a 2.5 percent fee will be added for the credit card company. Two people were sentenced to prison in Wayne County Circuit Court recently. 37-year-old Fairfield resident Shaun D. Carl pleaded guilty last week to a Class 3 felony count of possession of less than five grams of meth. Judge William Hudson sentenced him to seven years in prison. 39-year-old Mt. Vernon resident Matthew D. Allen pleaded guilty Tuesday to the same offense. Judge Michael Molt sentenced him to five years in prison and one year mandatory supervised release. Clay County deputies arrested 48-year-old Fairfield resident Christopher A. Medler yesterday on a Clay County failure to appear warrant for operation of an uninsured motor vehicle. He was taken to the Clay County Jail and held, pending the posting of $375 bond. Most workers at Deere & Co. rejected a contract offer Tuesday that would have given them 10 percent raises. The vote means workers will remain on strike in hopes of securing a better deal, and the disputed contract covers more than 10,000 Deere workers at 12 facilities in Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas. The raises in the latest proposal were twice those in the original offer United Auto Workers union members rejected last month, but they weren't enough to end the strike that began October 14th. Central Illinois Congressman Rodney Davis has announced a new student loan tax benefit for employers in the Employer Participation in Repayment Act. He says it allows employers to make tax-free student loan payments on behalf of their employees. According to data compiled by CNBC, about 44 million Americans hold over $1.6 trillion in student debt. Fairfield National Bank has announced it will bring in David Kenshalo and Brad Jesop, along with the employees of McDowell, Kenshalo & Jesop, LLC, to FNB Financial, a new tax and consulting services division. The new arrangement takes effect December 1st, and employees at McDowell, Kenshalo & Jesop will continue their services at their current location. The Wayne City Village Board met Monday night and approved donations to Wayne City Matters for the Christmas Parade on December 11th and to JT's Restaurant for the Thanksgiving Meal for the community. In other business, the board said village employees had finished installing new gas meters for all residential accounts, ending a five year job. Employees were thanked for their hard work in making the upgrades. The Secret Santa Committee based out of the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church has announced deadlines and its event kickoff for this Christmas season. Forms have been delivered to the Wayne County Health Department for pickup by parents. Forms must be filled out and returned no later than the 15th, and the Secret Santa Tree will be placed at Kincaids on the 13th. Gifts must be returned to Kincaids by December 4th. The Edwards County Health Office announced two new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, both in unvaccinated individuals. The county sat at 1,072 total cases. Wabash County added 11 cases to reach 2,191; one person was hospitalized, and nine were in isolation. Hamilton County added seven cases yesterday and sat at 1,338; two people were hospitalized, and 11 were in isolation. Jefferson County reported six cases. The state Department of Public Health announced 1,746 new cases and 40 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,705,777 cases and 25,898 deaths. The Southern Region had a seven-day positivity rate of 2.2 percent on October 31st, unchanged from the 30th. The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs is asking the public to reach out to residents of state veterans' homes. The agency hopes people will write a quick note as part of the "Operation Rising Spirit" campaign. Cards and letters can be sent to the Veterans' Affairs Office in Springfield to be forwarded to one of the state's five veterans' homes or sent electronically at veterans.illinois.gov. Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 2.11 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 8.50 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 15.25 feet. Today's crude oil price is $73.75, down $3.25 from yesterday. The December crude oil price is $81.01, down $1.35 from yesterday morning.

The Greater Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce held its 100th Annual Dinner Meeting last night at the Elks Dining Hall. Brad Jesop received the Outstanding Community Service Award, and Don, Nick, and Anthony Zurliene accepted the Business of the Year Award for Zurliene Enterprises. Additionally, Mayor Mike Dreith handed out the first annual SMILE Award to Kristi Hornung. The award stands for Shines, Motivates, Inspires, Leads, and Excels; winners will be announced quarterly in the future, with one chosen for the new annual award. The Albion City Council met last night. It set Trick or Treating hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on the 30th, and it also heard a request from Knapp Mart to allow the store to sell alcohol so it can install a gaming operation. The council scheduled a Liquor Commission meeting for next Tuesday at 7 to discuss the matter. In other business, the final vote on redistricting wards will take place after city ordinances have been recodified. Fairfield Community High School plans to hold Parent/Teacher Conferences October 26th and 28th from 4 to 7 p.m. On the 28th, seniors and their parents and guardians are invited to attend a FAFSA workshop to get help in completing the required financial aid form. The Hamilton County Community Unit School District will partner with the State of Illinois to hold a free COVID-19 vaccine clinic later this week. The clinic will run from 7:30 to 11:30 this Thursday and Friday at the Unit Office at 804 Golf Course Road in McLeansboro, and the Pfizer vaccine is authorized and recommended for persons 12 and older. The Egyptian Health Department announced nine new cases of COVID-19 in White County since Saturday, bringing its total to 2,996. Hamilton County reported five cases since Friday and sat at 1,289; one person was hospitalized, and seven were in isolation. Jefferson County added 44 cases since Saturday, including 11 yesterday. The state Department of Public Health announced 7,139 new cases since Friday afternoon and 59 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,638,003 cases and 25,076 deaths. The Southern Region had a seven-day positivity rate of 4.7 percent on October 1st, down from 4.9 percent on September 30th. Its seven-day average availability for ICU beds was up to seven percent. Illinois State Police say 21-year-old Richmond, Missouri, resident Rachel G. Paul was hospitalized after a single-car accident on Interstate 64 in Wayne County yesterday afternoon. She reportedly struck a guardrail and came to rest in a wooded area of the median. Her vehicle caught fire, but she was able to escape beforehand with non-life-threatening injuries.
