BOYS TOWN, Neb., Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Brain atlases, tools that map various areas and centers of the brain, have been around for decades, but until now, most researchers have only used young adult subjects (ages 18 to 35) to create these brain maps. This left a gap in the research arena when it came to the study of age-related brain changes and diseases, as no baseline data existed for this older population (which represents 15 percent of the United States and continues to show significant growth year after year).

care. the callousness of this policy is so shocking. >> the chaos and the moral corruption that this administration exhibited in this case. she said that last year the american academy of pediatrics issued a statement of family separations because of psychological effects. highly stressful experiences, disrupting a child's brain architecture and affecting his/her short/long-term health. this is known as toxic stress can carry lifelong consequences for children. >> and even -- some of these children, that lifelong consequences may include never seeing their parents again.

period, of these parents and children. talk about the kind of long-term damage. this is your area of expertise. the kind of long-term damage this kind of traumatic separation can bring to these young children. >> so what we know is that children experience stress, and we all experience stress. but these very young children experience stress in the form of high levels of cortisol and fight or flight hormones. and in the presence of a parent or a caring adult, they can be soothed and calmed, and those stress hormones can be buffered. but when those stress hormones are allowed to stay untracked by a parent, not buffered by somebody who these children know and love, those levels of chemicals can actually disrupt the neuronal pathways and disrupt the brain architecture
