THOUSANDS of people tuned into the very first Halstead and Braintree Christmas lights switch-on. The virtual event was moved online this year in light of the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing rules. Viewers were able to enjoy a series of pre-recorded music performances from PARC Essex, local singer Sophie Griffiths and Halstead Choral, as well as an appearance from Father Christmas. Halstead s Mayor Mick Radley also made an appearance in the video to switch on the town s lights. Bosses have hailed the virtual event a success as an estimated 4,600 watched from the comfort of their own homes. Members of the community also contributed heart-warming messages, including a recorded message from the Chairman of Braintree District Council to thank residents, local businesses, emergency services and key workers across the Braintree District for sticking together through a challenging year and for the incredible things they have done to help the comm ....
