It’s no secret that NFL players have been pushing to get rid of turf for years, but on Wednesday’s episode of the New Heights podcast, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce advocated for stadiums to start using real grass for their fields.
Artificial turf has come a long way since since it was introduced on a grand stage to the sports world in 1966 at the Astrodome in Houston. Playing on ChemGrass, which became known as AstroTurf, was a lot like playing on low-pile carpet laid atop concrete. The quality has advanced so much that many stadiums used by professional and college football teams have decided it is the better option.
When a new football stadium was built at South Alabama, located in one of America's rainiest cities, the decision was made to go with an artificial turf playing surface. At San Diego State, where the weather seems almost always perfect, going with a grass field was an easy choice — but not the usual one in major college football. Of the 133 schools that currently compete in the top-tier of NCAA Division I, 94 have artificial surface football fields (71%) and 39 have grass (29%), most of those at Power Five schools that can afford the upkeep and maintenance.
