France Sends Second Boat to Jersey in Fish Row: Brexit Update

France Sends Second Boat to Jersey in Fish Row: Brexit Update
Bloomberg

Joe Mayes
(Bloomberg) -- The U.K. and French navies dispatched military patrol vessels to the isle of Jersey amid a deepening row over post-Brexit fishing rights.
The two British patrol ships were deployed Wednesday night ahead of a potential blockade by French fishermen as a precautionary measure, the U.K. said. France said it sent two vessels Thursday morning to guarantee the safety of everyone at sea.
The deployment of the ships is a sign of the ongoing frictions between the two NATO allies, caused by Britain’s exit from the European Union. Negotiations over fish were one of the most contentious elements of the post-Brexit accord. France on Tuesday threatened to cut off power to Jersey to protest a lack of fishing licenses. Previously, Paris said it would limit access for U.K. financial services companies into the EU if its fishermen aren’t treated fairly.

The warning from the Irish leader came after the European Union announced it is taking legal action against the UK for what it describes as a "deliberate" breach of international law over its unilateral action on the Northern Ireland Protocol. Mr Martin said: "The Withdrawal Agreement contains within it mechanisms specifically designed to deal with issues that arise, a Joint Committee and Specialised Committees. That is where teething problems should be worked through, so that we can find common solutions.

Brexit news: UK now MORE attractive to lucrative investors - EU on alert over survey | Politics | News

According to PwC boss Bob Moritz, Britain owed its improvement to the fact it was an "independent country".
The boost, which sees only the US, Germany and China beat the UK, comes despite worrying signs the EU was attempting a power-grab of London's financial clout.
In December, Prime Minister Boris Johnson signed a Brexit trade deal with the bloc days before the end of the transition period.
In January, Amsterdam overtook London as Europe’s largest share trading centre.

But an agreement in the form of a memorandum of understanding, allowing banking, insurance and legal advice to be exported to the bloc, is near completion.
Both sides are expected to meet several times a year after the understanding is signed to ensure maximum cooperation.
EU markets would be able to take advantage of the City of London, which is seen as an iconic financial hub across the world.
But Brussels has so far refused to grant equivalence to the UK allowing British companies access to the bloc.

Ms Sanderson also attacked the Government and claimed a post-Brexit Britain could be "global leaders" in technology but are instead "talking about building tunnels".
She continued: "We have an opportunity to actually be global leaders by looking at the opportunities of using the tech talent in this country but instead we are talking about building tunnels.
"The Cabinet Office has said they will be looking at solutions this year but they're running out of time.

Meanwhile a new survey has suggested the UK is now a more attractive destination for investors than it was before Brexit, dealing a massive blow to Rejoiners pushing for the UK to rejoin the bloc. Mr Sunak believes the UK is better equipped to regulate financial services, which contributed £76bn in tax receipts two years ago, than Brussels.
