Grass+: correcting grass quality without running short


 
The average growth rate for the last week was 80kg DM/ha. The forecast for the weekend is for temperatures in the low to mid-twenties with rain in some areas.
The mix of warm and wet weather is expected to see growth rates in most counties to continue on an upward trend.
The dry weather has been a great opportunity to get silage done on a lot of farms.
Wet weather in May meant many had to delay cutting for a number of weeks which meant crops were heavy but this will have had an effect on quality.

Cookstown kitchen manufacturer reveals drop in sales and profits

COOKSTOWN manufacturing firm BA Kitchen Components has reported a slight drop in sales and profits in the year to the end of March 2020.
Established in 1990 by twin brothers Brian and Kieran McCracken, who have now stepped by from their day-to-day roles to be executive directors, revenues slipped back from £29.6 million to £28.1 million, according to accounts filed at Companies House.
In turn, the company s bottom-line profit fell from £3.2m in 2019 to £2.3m last year, though BA is still sitting on assets of close to £12.5m.
Operating from sites in Cookstown, Doncaster and Rotherham, BA Kitchen Components had 235 employees on its payroll at year-end, which was up from 231 a year earlier. Its wages bill for the year was £7.2m. ....

A subcommittee of Portland’s City Council has recommended seven people out of a pool of 27 applicants to serve on a new board that will oversee tenant protections and rent control.
The Rent Board is a central piece of an ordinance enacted in November through a citizen-initiated referendum that was opposed by most city councilors and is now being challenged in court by a group of landlords. The prospective members include three tenants, three landlords and a homeowner. ....

Bill for Witness Protection Programme drops to €200k


The State spent just €200,000 on its highly secretive Witness Protection Programme (WPP) in 2019, despite being allocated a budget of €1.2m - according to data released to the Sunday Independent.
In 2018 €653,000 was spent on the programme, compared with €800,000 in 2017, while in 2016 more money was spent on the programme than in any other year since 2006, when €1.32m was used.
The WPP is for those whose lives are left in danger after giving evidence in court against dangerous criminals.
The WPP was set up in 1997 to combat attempts by criminals to prevent the normal functioning of the criminal justice system , including threats of violence and intimidation of witnesses. ....
