Last year more than 330,000 monarch butterflies were counted overwintering along the California Coast. In 2019, researchers witnessed fewer than 2,000. With more data fluttering in from this year’s annual Xerces Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count, Xerces has already counted 100,000 monarch butterflies overwintering this year.
