Legislation that would remove one of the last tests teachers are required to take to earn a credential in California passed the Senate Education Committee.

Bowers Jr. and Edward Henderson | California Black Media - Black voters in California are concerned about the quality of K-12 education for Black students, with 50% believing that schools in their area do not provide quality education for Black students, according to a survey by the Black in School Coalition; the data is intended to offer insights into education-related concerns of Black voters and help develop more effective policies and programs to improve the quality of education that Black students receive.
The Legislature on Tuesday quickly approved a $310 billion 2023-24 state budget and sent it to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who signed the bill.
“It’s almost the opposite of what we were asking for,” said Debra Watkins, the founder and executive director of the California-based A Black Education Network.
Black leaders are criticizing a compromise plan by Gov. Newsom as not doing enough to help close the achievement gap of Black students.
