Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday announced the opening of the 2023 navigation season for the 524-mile New York State Canal system, kicking off the 199th consecutive opening of the historic waterways. Locks and lift bridges on the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals will operate daily today through Oct. 11, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and sightseeing to tourists, canal enthusiasts and all New Yorkers.

Dan Larrivée, who lives in Cumberland, is using his canoe to commute. “My wife works in Rockland, and I have to take her over; she starts at (9 a.m.) And she’s just started her job like last week, so she didn’t want to miss it,” he said.

Minor flood levels are expected in multiple locations between Mattawa, Ont. and the Montreal region, with major floods expected in flood prone areas, authorities say.

The program began last year with Brockport as the pilot community.

The clean-up following last week's ice storm continues in Kemptville, where hundreds of homeowners are now gutting their flooded basements.
