Covid UK: Tony Blair slams EU's 'very foolish' move to introduce vaccine controls

Tony Blair today criticised the EU s short-lived move to override the Brexit deal on Northern Ireland under its vaccine export controls as a very foolish move that jeopardised the peace process.
The former prime minister, a vocal supporter of the UK remaining in the bloc, said Brussels action in triggering Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol to control the movement of coronavirus jabs was unacceptable .
The EU backtracked on the move, imposed unilaterally as it faces shortfalls on vaccine supplies, after facing universal criticism from London, Dublin and Belfast.
Asked if the move was irresponsible, the Labour grandee told Sky s Sophy Ridge on Sunday: Yes, it was a very foolish thing to do and fortunately they withdrew it very quickly.

As the ancient proverb says, when the gods wish to destroy a man, they first make him mad. The contortions and swerves of the European Union over vaccines in the past few days certainly suggest that it is losing its reason.
Perhaps in time these events will weaken its strange power over much of Europe and compel its peoples and leaders to reconsider the wisdom of building a vast multinational state in defiance of human nature.

This is my hometown this is a love child I m sure the through throat and the people. And I respect the trust following his re-election in his north London constituency Jeremy Corbin announced he would not lead Labor into one of the general election and would stand down as party leader following a period of reflection in one of the biggest casualties of the night the Liberal Democrat leader Joe Swinson lost by a 149 votes to the s.n.p. In Eastham Bonsa said if it is possible why does swing to the s.n.p. Across Scotland where the party is expected to win more than 50 seats the Democratic Unionist Nigel dogs the party leader at Westminster was based in my Shin Fein in Belfast North Platte could have held on to their 4 seats in Wales the Greens have retained Caroline Lucas is the m.p. For Brighton Pavilion and Nigel Farage is Brecht s it Party on tech spectate to win any seats let s have a quick look at languages whether cloudy a 1st this morning with a few showers in places and the day on Falls skies will remain fairly cloudy with further showers the should be some bright spells to quite breezy today a top temperature 8 Celsius that s 46 Fahrenheit. Is now forecasting the Tories will get a majority of 74 with delay but losing seats across the north the Midlands and Wales in places which backed brick seats and the 26 day referendum we ve been at age of like issues. 16 counts including Burnley begin boffo on Sunday Conservative Party founded it $15720.00 and I do if I declare something you can both them if you like I like. The salaries taking Burnley They also took behind a great song I was thinking 70 home with. 20 . 5 people. And here I did fly solo albums it is an. Album called service of gaining Lanka she came in Blackpool South Bend and. Said Today 60247 I declare to Scott Lloyd Bentsen to the electorate as a member of the bottle South constituency. Lancashire decides with Graham life b.b.c. Radio like you should also got our team of political experts to make sense of it in our studio this morning Mike Stevens is the B.B.C. s political reporter for Lancashire you know we ve seen huge swings of up to 8000 votes from Labor to the Tories in the largely leave voting seats of prime burned Burnley and Blackpool South Lancashire is now a mostly conservative county and the party is set for a sizeable majority national head of politics and chill university what have you made of the results Well the key thing now is what s next what s next for the government what s next for those losing part of this well Labor s going to have to do a lot of reflection as rosy Cooper m.p. Has said they need to do more listening the Lib Dems find themselves this morning without a leader lots to do for the opposition parties if you have just woken up and want to know the result what do you make of it are you. Lighted are you distraught you can call if you want to own a 178 double 358308078 double 3583 or send me a text message 8 on travel 3 stick length in front of you message you should. Be seen maybe you. Get slightly different feel to the Breakfast Show this morning good morning 7 minutes after 6 o clock on when and when said to God knows why on Friday morning Friday the 13th of December the results are in for the general election 8 it s a massive conservative victory marks the end national of the conservatives the minit have a majority of $32.00 seats we still have 8 seats to go which means that the majority can be up to 40 that s all they need you know they could have got by on 20 they will be hoping I was Boris Johnson has repeated throughout this campaign that there is enough M.P. s to get bricks it done to get Boris Johnson s Bracks deal through parliament and yet when we talk about getting bricks it don t know when politicians talk about getting bricks it Doan. Says one state you break it it certainly is because even wants the ties of been broken as all the trade deals that need to be negotiated so you know it s quite right to cite this this won t be Breck s it it will be the 1st in a number of stages of price set and I suspect we will go you know many many years to look forward to negotiations and conversations with Europe I mean the one thing that that is going in the Conservatives favor over this that is that they no longer need to rely on the day you pay so they cannot she decide what they want to do as a majority government and they ve got enough strength now to get what they want through the Commons will be told that the prime minister will be speaking at 7 o clock yes we re being told he will be a campaign event in central London a conservative campaign event and he will speak just after 7 o clock we will bring that to you live 9 minutes after 6 it is baby sitting right here Lancaster Graham at breakfast with our election special. On the. All the. Trouble Mike b.b.c. Radio like a ship 12 minutes after 6 I will have a 1st update on the roads coming up. Very very shortly but if you are just waking up this morning we ve where you where have you been what we ve been here Paula since what I am we have your very late if you just like you know I ve missed it all you ve missed it all and all the results are more or less in will result in like you sure it. It s. The game s over the conservatives have a majority of 66 so far today Paul Yeah that s that s I mean that we ve still got some German some our lives for example is not in yet that s a conservative lipped and marginal but you know based on what s happened so far think we can chalk in the conservative column different really interesting look a lot of talk. About Boris Johnson and the fact that people don t trust him and trust is a big issue when it comes to him. And people say the more you get to know Boris Johnson Demaio don t like you know more people still voted for him every day and when people vote today a lot of people say no I m not voting Tory I m voting Boris Yes he s got a separate branch as me which is quite useful for some of these things you know sometimes you actually want the party brand but other times it s useful to have a separate leader brand and I think what he had going for him was that poll ratings were always always better than Jeremy Corbin s So when people were asked who would make the better prominence trough the 2. Johnson was being chosen Johnson was being chosen so he managed to develop the separate brand very very cleverly and you know he sort of played the game you know he knew what needed to be done and he had good message discipline. We want to hear from you good morning to Gordon b. Absolutely delighted well done Boris Good morning to you and Elaine in Burnley absolutely absolutely delighted and Burnley lesson learned for Julie Cooper thinking they know best history made today was from Elaine in Burnley surf I couldn t stand if you were happy with the result you re likely to text in but if you know. You re probably trying to sleep right now I imagine. One. I don t know if you noticed Paula but Donald Trump has just tweeted. President of the United States has just tweeted congratulating Boris Johnson congratulations to Boris Johnson on his huge win Britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new trade deal after BRICs it this deal has the potential to be far bigger and more lucrative than any deal that could be made with the e.u. Celebrate Boris. Plus the latest tweet I mean it is traditional for leaders from other countries to congratulate the winners after these sorts of elections although Donald Trump always does in a non conventional way I mean the normal way would be to get on the phone have a booked conversation but we don t expect conventional from Donald Trump it s interesting Margaret Hodge who is a. M.p. Of some standing for labor she says Corbin talking about a period of reflection I ve reflected you failed please step down yes very very to the point and she had lots of Rabin s with him of anti semitism and other issues and in fact she was behind a no confidence motion within the parliamentary party against Jeremy Corbyn So not surprising really quite a few people coming out with those sorts of remarks already may be a mistake for Labor to dump their leader immediately because what happens if you have a vacuum is you make bad decisions Yeah there is an argument for him doing the caretaker job or you are interesting to see who they re going to get we could because with momentum every such a strong hold on labor will be someone really left wing or will it be someone more moderate Well I ve seen speculation that Lisa nanti from Wigan is interested to run obviously she comes from you know that if you re looking at reaching back out to the northern heartland she would be a good choice I suspect lovely lands here Hello good morning and you ve been with we ve been with us through the night never had. It s been very exciting isn t ferreting away you yes and you brought your parents in Leon and Charlie and Shelley they were everyone we got a load of our spurs of result between doing 3 ring 2 and 3 o clock Yeah seems like a long time ago. Could you get me another banana it s like a pigsty any I look at it I m sorry it s. Only Yeah I want to play No if you want to get in touch with his I d love to hear from you you can cause because yes they we can talk about the election now my God we can so how just how are you feeling this morning when you are waking up to the result that the fact that it s a massive conservative victory labor not done well at all Lib Dems. Dems really aren t of more violent calls you know they had a lot of people defect in. There pretty much on you know at the moment they re on 11 labor on 12 initially before all the different factions and there have been a few contests last very narrowly they expected to win Sheffield Hallam for example that was lost very narrowly so I would say the Lib Dems are going to have to really take a hard look at the strategy because this was an opportunity election in which the party to be brutal didn t perform if you want to get in touch 0807 a double 3583 or so many attacks on trouble 3 put links in front of you message more reaction coming up after a raging. Limit Over Asia and a little respect at 623 is Graham life bright firsts Good morning to Dave. Impressed and he says this election was about bricks it as such and was skewed from the starts domestic policy a suddenly taken a poor 2nd place to bricks it that s from Dave in the impression for the cave me from agile university would you go along with well it was mainly about Bracks it was named certainly in terms of the conservative narrative but I wouldn t say domestic politics to come back seat because all parties announced new domestic policies just about every day through the last 3 weeks of the campaign so we had about free broadband we had about social care we had about more nurses these are all domestic policy issues but when it came to actually making speeches and broadcast certainly the conservatives were very much majoring on Bracks it. Adrian and scam. He says more than Graham we re going to get a massive trade deal with the us our way Boris should talk to the Canadians about the sort of deal you get from Trump when the Canadian said they didn t like his American 1st Dale troops lap. Punitive Jew trees on Canadian exports to the us that s a major in scam lot of talk obviously Labor s big ploy was the n.h.s. Wasn t in Germany call them waving this dossier saying look at this I ve seen secret trade talks they said no the n.h.s. Is not going to be on the table that that was what you complicated I felt over those documents was that they were too complicated to really use as a good campaign method we re going to find on down the hallway where we are you know the thing is with campaigns you need but to boil things down and to sort of simple explanations and actually they work those documents were quite complex. Let s hear from our count 6 more exhibit on us and you may not have been with us all the way through the night we ve been broken since 1 am this morning bringing you all the results life if you have just woken up now you will not know the results across Lancashire so stick with us we will tell you the conservatives have won from Labor have taken Burnley there is a conservative m.p. In Burnley for the 1st time in over 100 years they have won Blackpool south and taken Hine burn of labor as well the Tories of also held on to Blackpool North enclave lease filed more common loans Dale Pendell the Ribble Valley Rossendale and Darwin South Ribble and wire impressed in North labor and held on to Blackburn Lancaster and Fleetwood Preston West Lancashire and the speaker salinity Hoyle who of course is independent now he still does speak is seeking re-election has been reelected the m.p. For choice let s go back to one of those conservatives seats that they held Rossendale in Darwin and the m.p. There is still Jake Barrie I think what we ve seen tonight not just here Rosendahl and all an officer of the lighted to being re-elected isn t in fact it rejection of the politics of the hard left in Jeremy Corbyn I mean who would have thought that the Conservative Party would win Burnley would win. It a it s been a brilliant evening for hours and you know I hope the success will be reflected across the country and what will this mean now with the Tory party having such a big majority What can you do well we don t we don t yet know how big the majority of people are all signs look good I just think it means we can bring stability to this country and crucially you know moved beyond when I was knocking on doors people telling me maybe they were just completely fed up of the deadlock that we ve seen in Parliament we can now move beyond. The people. Did. Well. In fact that we could from the European Union I mean a. Very. Good deal quickly. That with a good majority. Of the European Union by the end of January. The trap. Of. Liberal Democrats looking for a new leader. Will become. Another election. Year. The party president it s natural that those 2 would be the right. Until a new election can be arranged. To buy the Constitution. Of Parliament so there was actually no chance of Jo Swinson staying on as late as that will have to be one of the M.P. s who s elected as leader has just gone 630 b.b.c. For truly. And of course continue to be the speaker of the House of Commons. o clock in the morning enjoying the exotic radio like should. Not be well treated but I think I ve had too many bananas but anyway it s interesting what Andrew Neil said it s just he s just said something along the tele we can out a 3rd trance transformative election 19451979 now this 11997 I would have put one in there as well. In terms of. This has been Labor voters who ve never ever ever Yes but in the whole time touring we have an election there are a lot of Tory vote yes who went across to so Mr Neil I disagree with your list but bricks are a stranger absolutely absolutely blown a hole and you do get these elections which are more significant than numbers and you ve got this this is clearly one of those because the ball knows that effectively tied to people to their party loyalty have come very very loose and I think what we can see in future is even more volatility on the part of the voters so it s going to be much much harder to make predictions our parties are going to have to think more carefully about. The assumption that I have blocks of supporters who are always there now smaller parties don t tend to do that yet so the Liberal Democrats and the Greens don t tend to assume they have blocks of support but labor always has and this is been a bit of its own doing this time yeah a lot of lot of Northern labor and pays a listen don t don t take these lot for granted Yes And you know it s about who gets listen to isn t it really and you do you know you do hear some M.P. s say look you know we set this and we set this and we set this and now look so it s about whether you know who s whose views count in the end of the decision making process if you re just waking up and if you want to know the results. Of finding out the results and you re happy you are delighted or if you are beside yourself it s a case of are really don t know why people have voted this way then call me this morning why do you think it s it has gone this way and we can t Yesterday we can talk about it this morning we can tell me why you voted tell me if you voted Tory for the 1st time tell me why you stuck with labor tell me why you think. Jeremy Corbin hasn t hasn t worked in it and clearly it hasn t worked Are you a Lib Dems slightly disappointed with what s going on party nowhere No I think absolutely no on the backs of party will now disappear because assuming that Boris Johnson does deliver and there s no reason to think he won t the sort of rest on direction of the Bracks it Party would disappear and when we come out of Europe those m.e. Piece will go so the Bracks it Party will have no elected politicians so it s hard to see a role going forward for for that party let s hear from the m.p. For Lancaster and Fleetwood kept Smith she is still the labor m.p. For Lancaster Fleetwood although her majority was squeezed a little bit I don t know I chatted to alive on the programme it seems ages ago now I mean before her result was announced but she had a rough idea that she was going on to win and here s what she said to me I was incredibly disappointed sat fizzles from across the country and I and it s here. We ve suffered and some very disappointing defeats in the seat of health for a very long time for generations and there s no doubt that the issues that were coming up on the doorsteps on the campaign trail and actually over the past few months and perhaps even years. Down the frets it since the referendum it s been clear to me that my constituency and the country as well of course and a very divided on this issue a lot of the seats that Labor s defeats in seats that voted fairly heavily as an easy opinion obviously did talk about bricks on the doorstep but did they talk about Jeremy Corbyn as well. Yes but to be honest Jeremy came across an issue on the doorstep as well as Bracks it. Got out there and I ve campaigned. I stand by how I voted for the past 4 and a half years as the m.p. Flagstone Fleetwood in the hope to be reelected in the next few hours here at Lancaster town hall standing on that record and know in there and I ve always put the best interests of my constituents and constituency and heart of everything I ve done if you watch look you know to be reelected it s going to be harder in opposition for labor with the Tories now having a big whopping majority what should you do next. Well I ve been not on mobile phones in the count in my presentation was going on in the rest the country and this certainly is the exit polls are true which I would say it s clear that it s going to be a significant conservative majority which would make it very difficult for an opposition to be able to put the brakes on any of the extreme policies that they might want to pursue and so forces that s incredible disposal in the state of Labor s defeat it is something that s going to take a long time for us to understand I think and make the right decisions of why I m glad you ve broken the news to me Graham when he set the record and says he won t believe in His into the next election but I think that is the right decision from Germany to do that and I think that it s important as a late Farsi that we allies the results from tonight and carefully and not made to rush decisions I don t want to make some kind of townships not decision about what the results tonight mean what direction the Labor Party should take I think it s really important that we looked very carefully on the results it s Mike in the studio just a quick one your from Barrow Barrow in Furness I know you said you don t know much mobile signal that s a conservative gain from labor in Barrow in Furness and all again in both the northeast the conservatives in search field Tony Blair s former seat how is it tonight for labor. Has not lived in power in fairness since 2003 so I can t claim to have any in-depth knowledge of the sea these days but I am the one thing that is a pattern across all these seats is of see the heavy LIFO and it s incredibly disappointing to lose these seats. And as a Labor Party we need to look very carefully it s these northern seats as you ve named And you know figure out a way that we can regain people s trust and be the Labor Party that they can vote for the next election. Those cats Miss still the m.p. For Lancaster of Lakewood it s just gone a quarter to 7 b.b.c. Radio Lancashire travel. James Bond the are miscible podcast is available now from b.b.c. Sound Japan cost provider and social media is going to be a b.b.c. Radio like he used to be an m.p. Didn t a job or under oath yes and he for Chester for want yes just interested and there s only 5 seats left to declare in the entire country and labor isn t a contender in any of them so this means that Labor have definitely done worse than Michael Foot did in 1983 and people looked at people make comparisons didn t they which I recall been a Michael for about how they dressed and their presentation style their brand of socialism yes although Michael Foot was much more of a parliamentarian than Jeremy called me Jeremy Corbyn was much more of a sort of rallies. But yeah yeah people have made you know comparisons and there was a time when a very young Corbin was involved in groups within the Labor Party with Marco for and others so. You know there is a sort of comparison there I think the difference is that Marco fought it was effectively fighting at a time when there was also the s.t.p. Liberal Alliance and Labor were very much under threat from that so the party was very much under siege and it should have been easier. In modern times for the party to do better because the threat of the alliance which is simply not here at the moment we would love to hear from you this morning you can call I once we did. For Burnley the incumbent had to live up to in terms of constituency work and case work that s from Lisa in Burnley this was the moment though when Burnley turn blue I m a Catholic been the acting bit 13 obvious there but then the constituents there. Give north that the number of votes we thought for each candidate at the said election as follows. Birtwistle garden liberal Democrats 3500 m. World. Briggs Chows Edwards commonly known as Briggs Chalo then the m. Party and independent party 1162. Cooper if you Elizabeth Blair the Passe 14368. Basic Law or the green pathway $739.00. Else and alum independent 100 I m the to. Begin until a conservative party candidate 15727. Scott Stewart breaks a path a 3362. So the conservatives have taken a take a Burnley from 15720 votes for the Conservatives a majority of 1400 the nan. You can hear them cheering in the background is the conservative Anthony Higginbotham. Well 1st of all let me thank all the voters of. Not just those who voted for me but those who support I still have to work. This was a historic vote for change in this area but it was also a vote to deliver on the referendum of 2060 I will honor that referendum result and ensure that the u.k. Leaves the European Union as the people of the us. Then. Move on to the priorities that we ve talked about during this campaign. The n.h.s. Police in schools. And let me and you might find it by the country to had a fantastic company but also for the council staff has worked tirelessly this evening to make this all possible. I think that was one poll we had. Which is remarkable. We do have to remember Burnley hasn t always been Labor had a lip. Some time ago but yes not one if we d been a few weeks ago going out to put money on what we thought would happen that wouldn t be $1.00 of the things we would have better. Certainly not. Radio like the show. And with the latest b.b.c. Radio news he has others who are saying he gray and the conservatives have sweats to victory in the general election following a collapse in labor support in areas which voted to leave the European Union in the BRICs it referendum with almost all results now declares the Tories will have a majority of at least $72.00 in the new parliament their forecast to win $365.00 seats whilst labor is expected to return 203 M.P. s to Westminster speaking after being re-elected in Oxbridge and south rise that Boris Johnson said the large conservative majority would allow the country to move on from the Bronx it debases One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate. To get rich. I know just to get pretty dumb but you know this country and to take it forward and to focus on the frailties of the British people here in Lancashire there have been 3 significant results for the conservatives taking Heinberg and Burnley and Blackpool south from Labor golden Mohsen who d been a labor m.p. For Blackpool South since 1997 has lost his seat the new m.p. Is Scott Benson with a majority of around 4000 in his victory speech Mr Benson thanks cooled Maza of his work over the past 22 years and said the result sends out a strong message this is a way out of. It s Ok for. Us are. They losing seats to see and it. Says it s taken that it seems that far too. In Burnley Antony Higginbotham has taken a seat from Labour s Julie Cooper to become the town s 1st conservative m.p. In more than a century I think this was a big vote for change in management think after the 2016 referendum everyone took a step back and said Are we.

Will lead a government with a majority of at least $75.00 following a night in which the Tories took seat after seat from labor in areas of northern England the Midlands and Wales which backed Bragg s it in 2016 would you to see left to declare the conservatives are expected to have 364 M.P. s and speaking in the past hour the prime minister said there was or gave him a mandate to get drugs it done and to the u.k. Out of the next month this election means that getting Brits it done is now the irrefutable irresistible all arguable decision of the British people. With this election. Miserable threats of a 2nd reference. With a label a to Jeremy Corbyn has said that issue of Bragg s it had contributed to what he called a very disappointing night for his party Labor is expected to send $203.00 M.P. s but to Westminster which is the party s worst performance for decades Mr Coburn announced he would stand down as Labor leader after he won his seat with a Labor m.e.p. For the Midlands Rory Palmer lays the blame squarely at the door of mystical there s been no that works Epson s be different be different ideas a different approach and this dreadful results overnight is the conclusion that this is a sorry sorry episode in the Labor party system with a new conservative m.p. For love which was the last constituency to declare in Leicestershire can t wait to meet her new constituents you know and understand and know absolutely everything that s going on and that is just should say I want to come people from all walks of life from all aspects of life in a constituency to see how I can help elsewhere locally non of the seats change hands Labor less that remains red whilst Leicestershire remains blue we do have more female M.P. s than ever though here s the thoughts of some of you on the national picture in Leicester this morning. I just think people s priorities. Are different really to live as a friend I think is good for people. Seeing staying home and trying to get benefits and money for no reason. In But position Graeme confuser they are lots of. Well and one of the most high profile shocks of the night the Liberal Democrat leader Joel Swenson lost her seat into Bart and she East she was beaten by. 149 votes by the s.n.p. The Lib Dems have announced that said Davy and Lady Brinton will take over as joint acting leaders until a replacement for Miss Winston is elected early next year speaking after her defeat she said that the election result was clearly a setback for liberal values for millions of people in our country these results bring dread and dismay and people are looking for hope I still believe that we as a country can be warm and generous. Inclusive and open and that by working together with our nearest neighbors we can achieve so much more wells where in Scotland it was a triumphant night for the s.n.p. They ve increased their tally of M.P. s to 48 in Northern Ireland is now more nationalist than unionist M.P. s the D.P. s Westminster leader Nigel Dodds was among those to lose their seat in Wales plied Komi held there for seats as the conservatives made gains from Labor the brig s it party failed to win any seats whilst the Greens retain their only m.p. The m.p. For Brighton Caroline Lucas was just one top sport story this morning in Leicester opened initial talks with James Madison and Charles so injury over improved long term contracts that s according to the manager Brendan Rodgers the pair been among the club s top performers this season with City 2nd in the Premier League Rodgers though was tight lipped on much about the deals but he did say that Director of Football John McCain had been interpreted as of super some pieces of speculation going on I think John has had some conversations with representatives so far as was out so there s nothing really to be up to. You in half an hour but for now that s all you latest b.b.c. Radio Leicester News thank you weather wise today very cloudy start to the day the some rain around to maybe the chances and sunny spells in the mix as well a bit little bit later on but it s feeling culls top temperature 7 degrees Celsius on the roads this morning big big problems around the m 69 this morning that there was an accident between junction between the m one junction 21 which is actually junction 2 the m 69 traffic queueing back to the Foxhunter around about on the approaches there so really really bad emergency 7 Trent works Also happening this morning on new parks way that s at the junction with Aikman a nice flow there and because of water works in Leicester parts of Coleman road still closed because of the work between opting in road and Coleman road that s the very latest they ll be more from Karen in 15. Minutes time. Yes all the election latest coming up but we want to hear from you this morning I was going through your mind if you did or why did you do so 101049. Radio 6 minutes past 8 you chaining to b.b.c. Radio Leicester with 80. The news your waking up to this morning the conservatives have won the general election with a majority the party has made large gains at the expense of its traditional haul lands Here s the story of a momentous night. Poll is suggesting that there will be a conservative majority. Anywhere near there so this will be extremely disappointing for the party overall from let s go to blood here and levy the concept of party candidate 17 times by I I m going to be on the train on Monday I m going to London we re going to get bricks and Jordan these are parts of the country that are absolutely drenched in red and we re seeing time and again so far just flipping over to the other side we are going to work and I think they are gathering the candidates as we speak let s have a look Jenkinson the Conservative Party 20000. But the message from we re going to be this we will deliver Workington voltage for 3 years until we will get bricks I don t message has got through people have rejected utterly the division that was offered by Jeremy Corwin and John McDonald dynamic on the other the Labor Party tonight. We have failed to meet the test of the public and in doing that we filed the people. Back this is obviously a very disappointing. As for the Labor Party I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign the party leader believe Dems Joe Citizen has lost a seat in democracy east to the Scottish National Party for millions of people in our country these results would bring dread and dismay. And people are looking for hope this One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate not just to get rich or die but you ve got this country today who would thank you very much. So you ve gathered from there the Confederates have secured a majority of more than 70 in parliament following that general election count yesterday sweeping gains in traditional Labor heartlands in the north of England not too far away from here across Dobbs You re not see I m sure as well they won in the former mining area of Blythe Valley in red Bishop Clint and in Tony Blair s former constituency of such failed Boris Johnson says he now had a mandate to get bricks it done now after Labor leader Jeremy Kolb when he announced that he wouldn t lead the party into another general election following its worst performance in decades he said he d stay on to allow for a period of reflection within the party now all night our reporters at b.b.c. Radio Les to have been out and about across Leicestershire to bring you your local election results and we ll run through what happened then Gibbs was in Melton at the King and with the 7th Sports Center for the Rutland and Melton count the historic night in the eastern part of our county his role in the Melton has a new and pay for the 1st time in 27 years after surrounding don t can still down there s still a conservative hold of AC current is the new and paid for this constituency she picks up around $36.00 and a half 1000 votes tonight that s 27000 more than the Labor Party candidates on the top. 9 and a half 1000 the majority since 2017 has gone up by 4000 votes. As the new and pay for Linda Melton Jack Rafferty was a cli leisure center for the balls with kero in a seat this big conservative since 9070 and voted overwhelmingly to leave in the referendum there was no real shock to be had here. Worth but what will please the Tories is that even with David should it make stepping down after 32 years his successor Dr Luke Evans has actually increased their majority in north west left a shit job all stock was at the Hermitage leisure center no surprises here in northwest less to share as expected the conservative Andrew Bridge and was reelected as m.p. For North West Leicestershire in what s being called a Brics it election I suppose it s no surprise that a key Brick City would win their seat back and he s managed to increase his majority yet again by a couple of 1000 or Next over to Ode b. And Bridget Blair watched the harbor account declared nearly O Brien the conservative candidate was elected for the 2nd time with 31698 votes he s delighted but there was disappointment for the of the 4 candidates Celia Hibbert though the Labor candidate got over 14000 votes in her very 1st general election as a candidate and Sophie Cook was there to oversee the southwest to share results a conservative win here at the end of the leisure center count in self-less to share with our biotope cost to keeping his c. In the kids to $2.00 in say with $36791.00 votes a 72 percent turnout for the area $74.00 Pollin stations and over 77000 registered on the electoral register Well our political reporter Tim Parker was in the last stuff Claudia Webb replaces keep in Leicester East and labor how old Leicester south and west to yet everywhere source some labor support for the way mainly to the Tories in Leicester East John. With a list Kendall Ron railed against the prospect of a majority Conservative government to come and over in love bro where the last child would seats were declared the conservatives held firm in fact built on their majorities and are going for the more rural child would seat and Jane hunt replacing Nikki Morgan in love growing the majority there by nearly $3000.00 were just let s just kind of recap because we heard from Big Show us there was everywhere last night we were every over the place as you know been a plea to aborted Tim you say how proud that s major is one of the team genuinely everyone did their bit last night it takes a lot to you know stand in a cold leisure center so sometimes warm Leisure Center County just concentrating on these things giving us an atmosphere in the flavor of what was going on there was amusing moments which we ve heard this morning and but yes I just want to say thank you to everyone who really did pull stops out last night from I think and your voice you re going home this is this is one of these let everything down. I m going to croak away there to myself for the rest my voice so I have a level next week whiskey Lemon in Ginger reckon straight to bed when I was here the Christmas party later tonight. So there was time with what s been going on there now the big headline of the night really as well as Boris Johnson s majority was Labour s performance they lost so many seats and they are extremely disappointed Jeremy Corbyn himself saying he s disappointed he s going to hang on for a bit longer just to kind of regroup and see what happens next we spoke to labor I mean Rory Palmer a little earlier on this morning he said that it was a catastrophic night for labor and he put the blame firmly at the feet of Jeremy called when he said that he was a turnoff for voters but what about those who are campaigning for labor How are they feeling this morning we can tell and Avery pen he s 24 he s from West Coast has been campaigning for Labor in a loft for more. Avery good morning nice to be here nice to you sound very lively considering I ve got to you ve been all not 8 yeah it s what happens when you have too much coffee I think it s just running on fumes at this point right yeah slightly bouncing off the ceiling but how are you feeling this morning about the result I m shocked disappointed. Really frustrated we did a lot with in the marginal seat which is obviously lost and went to campaign for still Brady a fantastic Labor candidate who unfortunately has obviously lost and it s really disappointing to see the increased Tory majority that you know we did everything we could we knocked on every single door put every leaflet through and it s so disappointing to come out of that with such a thumping Tory majority really so quite shocked by that So on the doorsteps when you were talking to voters what were they telling you. I mean overall the reception was pretty positive people did like your party but every now and then you would hear people who were turned off unfortunately by Jeremy Corbin and John McDonnell and some of our. Cabinet you would hear all sorts of quite strange stories and there was one that really springs placement in the mind that it was. A friend of mine and I were taught that Jeremy hope and John McDonnell an excess. You should be trying to flee against that kind of message not easily our manifesto was very optimistic and try to inspire hope but when you re fighting against that kind of thing it s very difficult to get your optimism across was that hard to sell on the doorstep that that optimism was and ultimately that the voters rejected it they didn t feel it was for them did you did you find it hard to sell it yourself I don t necessarily think the manifesto was the thing that we were struggling to sell it was the idea of Jeremy cotton and John Donnelly in Number 10 a Number 11 Downing Street so what I mean. Jeremy Corbin said he s going to hang on now for a bit he wants to sling things down so where did labor go from here because it seems there is this this this is a hard left faction versus the more moderate faction What do you think Labor should be doing now we need to unite we absolutely need to unite because we have a long potentially 5 years ahead of us we need to make sure that our messaging is clear that we re not letting our opponents dictate the narrative as we did with opposition on rocks just so long between the referendum result and this general election. And we need to have someone ideally a woman I think it s about time Labor had a leader who was a woman and someone outside of London as well that speaks to the region We ve obviously lost. Well over overnight but who do you think will do you think would be a good contender. Please got a bit of a soft spot for at least Andrea I think Rebecca long Bailey and you were right it would be good choices and actually really going to my parents live up in northwest Oregon obviously they lost a lot of good cop that he was fantastic champion of underprivileged people in that area and she would have been a great success which I recall but a couple couple of those names are fairly to the left of the policy is do you feel there is an argument that perhaps things should go more sense centrist in order to regain those those voters that have just left just walked away from the party I ll be honest I don t think I don t think our opponents trying to drift toward the center I think we need to go ahead with really radical policies like the ones that we brought to the table in 2019 obviously yesterday I forgot what day it is apparently running on that. We need to make sure that we re selling real change because bringing the States I mean obviously it s a long it s not work that has it that kind of that time like a manifesto hasn t proved appealing and even with an even with a leader who s different are you confident that is probably. Seas would cut it with the electric moment full of German cotton was as unpopular in 2017 as he was yesterday but we still managed to make gains because we were able to sell America at a time when bricks it didn t necessarily dominate the political agenda this has been a very direct focused election but those 3 words get bricks that really did focus the minds of people who voted for the Tories or Boris Johnson depending on you know whichever way they thought about it yesterday and I think if we got that out with the way in all honesty if we kept bricks done we d be able to sell a much more radical agenda without the worries that we would otherwise have there in terms of you know trying to make our position or breaks a cliff or a real deal 24 years old and amongst your friends of a similar age people you work with people you know how are they feeling about politics at the moment and engaging in it with you know not just to political activists but people you know just around about Friends School friends are kind of thing are people engaged and and and have people voting it s a mixed bag I think a lot of people are engaged a lot of people are willing to listen and understand the world around them but somebody called it s such a complex thing at times and there s the so much archaic procedure in Parliament that it can be difficult to engage with and become interested in and it does mean that people kind of go Well I don t know what I m doing I don t know whether I should go and it can obviously bring their turnout but you know that s the job of of people who are campaigning like myself to try and get people interested in these things and change minds and obviously we haven t done the best job and. The result I resign Q I m going to try and sort of chill and get some rest and let the coffee at the system I think get some sleep thank you so much for talking about that was a very Pan who was a labor campaigner in the don t forget Helen McCarthy is the Clark Clark turn now if she wants to hand. Being. Gaijin Where was the mood like. You know what some people also down I can barely get them to talk to me others are relieved and others all plain happy as you say Lester s clocktower what I like to say is it s a microcosm of the country that passes here I ve spoken to people who ve stayed up all night listening to the election the Rubino work all night some of them have no idea of the results are spoken to people who are heading into work this morning he don t care about the results of the election and didn t vote right through to an immigrant who told me he feels less welcome in this country as a consequence of the election results I am pleased I found my 1st liberal Democrat voter but have a listen yourself here s a taste of the country passing by Lester s clocktower I m really proud of my sister for sticking with. Damning our Tories for how many years of heroes our Boris Johnson may have been the last prime minister you know a kingdom I could see all that split up. Yes and are in trouble processing the already. Labor support Yeah generally yesterday yeah yeah. Yeah. I m not works of her the whole thing going on it s just been one long. Depressing experience but you know. We needed and I think it s a result we needed I think Doris is going to take things forward get breaks it down and all that and move on to more important things. And it was quite a big long flight so it should have been I think Jeremy Corwin is. Just hazardous to the country quite frankly and scenery disappears the better. Right. To be fair I don t really want to be Ok quote of the day I guess I was I know you feeling stay . A month you happy to further Duffy think we could ve done better as a nation as a country and definitely as an immigrant myself I don t feel like I belong here anymore ill even less now so is deaf it difficult deficit and we ve got to plan for the future but what do you know so by Really I m not too interested in politics I don t care really did you vote what. I was actually really busy so I didn t Ok thank lights I think it was expected to be a list of the it was a shock said. I always really was bored by support to live during this election just because a back seat mostly. But Labor still got into my seat so I knew there was no hope in changing that with the system currently have so. Did you just live Damn this one election or are you supporter over just a selection news for 1st time not done it before not sure if I ll do it again it depends on what they do with their party plans or Labor does with their party as well really and so what do you think will happen regarding backset now. Morris says he s going to leverage I do so we ll see what happens with more than likely he will get us to leave because he s got majorities or push that through and how we feel disappointed because I was well I voted to remain so I m disappointed at that but it is what it is we have to get on with it and the day that we can do about it. Varied opinion there than it is get in this morning she will be there for as well until 9 o clock this morning Syme if you want to go and speak to life you want to go and tell her about your mood while you all feel it with that was all of the general election this morning with conservatives winning by a majority I can say oh we can t miss our she s down there go me about the clock tower and you can have a chat with us now many people climate change was a massive issue in this election that show me as a teenager from a Leicester who s been on the front lines of this debate what do you make of the result this morning. Me here again. This election. Year I think it was a disappointment for many young people. They want to have a party which of course young people are the center of the qualities they want to the party that would advocate for climate change like no other because if it. Was your party that would. Be little noise like Believe you me and not be quickly dead student that. Many young people having Tory majority. Quiet it is pointing and I think many young people even said that we d be happy with a hung parliament and these knowing the Tories call keep cutting like how. Many people voted told me that we can t really trust the Tories right now for the last 10 years . Cut money for my education. My schools are already get schools are having to run by businesses so I think people young people especially don t have trust in the current government and they wanted coalition with the other wanted a Labor government or a hung parliament just to make sure that the Tories correct continue that Tyrell you could say so. Saying then you know a lot of young people speaking to you you know no no happy with this result this morning I mean why do you think then that the conservatives manifesto did they think it doesn t promise enough on climate then so the difference between the club can. Conduct a manifesto in the lane on the 1st or. Labor put. Climate change more towards the center of that there is a place to go to reduce emissions by 2038 o clock when Bill thank you stand. And to also have done prior to that because that is really submissions to 2050 1000000 people say it s too late by that we need the iron which came out 2 years ago so that we have 12 years to do something before it becomes irreversible for the threat to climate direct to the world because. And we want to be that that s happening now not the next 10 years so to have. The same answer here 2050 that some of the Tories promises about climate change about carbon neutral things like that but if you had the Prime Minister s a this morning what would you say to him. So. Are you going to claim Mary asked to keep the clues the purpose of you know I ve been a massive advocate for a child of the reports written report probably gets to me back to as yet back to the start of this year and I would say that this country has. Massive problem with child poverty that of my friends that are the people in the u.k. 40 percent of young people in Leicester live in poverty food bank use is on the rise that s the crew policy which targets young people which puts them in get by the time their god we don t have the same advantages that we did before and like when we when we do become adults we are treated the same way off with 2 thirds stigmatized so I say how other parties. Talk more policies and focus more on the young people other parts labor have reduced the manifesto. Regardless of what the cause that is that they can still have another 5 years in government why didn t he listen to young people why didn t you bring them in and say What problem do you want Ok I get this poverty let s let s let s start working towards how we can break free school meals that s how we can move that s how we can do something on climate change to any chance because also with the any chance young people of what I call you I ve seen this and social media then people are scared about the partition of the n.h.s. Desk and about you have to let me jump in here just a woman said 5 years then Ok 5 years you ll be 19 we ll be running in the next election. Only Would you oh. I think what I m saying is that they re never going to see what a legend they re showing with joy in this this morning and we should just say that we have put calls into all of a new M.P. s this morning of course they are all assuming their new jobs 1st thing this morning everyone who was elected yesterday and are now assuming their roles we are trying and trying and trying to get one of our new M.P. s on air later the results Antron a phone we re not going through to them or they re just asleep or something but it is not for the want of trying believe you me so we ll keep patting it and hopefully get some one of the for the end of the program the time now is just after half past 8. Radio last years. To be up to date with news this morning here s Rob good morning the conservatives have won their biggest general election majority since Margaret Thatcher in 1987 after claiming scores of seats from Labor and its traditional heartlands in the north of England with just one constituency left to declare the Tories have a majority of $78.00 seats across less this year it s more of the same although we do have 4 new M.P. s The 3 seats in Leicester were held by Labor whilst Leicestershire remains blue there were sizeable dense to those labor majorities across the city though and there s more female M.P. s in the county than ever a Labor me paid for these movements are said that Jeremy Corbyn is to blame after they lost those seats to the conservatives Rory Palmer was talking to was this morning after the Labor leader announced that he wouldn t leave the party into another election. Excuse me the Nguyen people of Braz told us that she wants to learn from her new constituents Jan Hunt has replaced the former education and culture secretary Nicky Morgan the s.n.p. Won 48 out of 59 seats in Scotland including a defeat the Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson in East Dumbarton she she has resigned and will be replaced by say Davy and Baroness Brenton and the Democratic Unionist Party leader at Westminster Nigel Dodds lost his seat to Shin Fein in Wales ply cum we held their 4 seats as the conservatives make gains from Labor the brig s it party failed to win any seats and the Greens retain their only unpaid Caroline Lucas let s get some top spot stories away from politics this morning was the city s director of football John Road King has made initial contacts with the agents of stars James Madison and Charles that s according to manager Brendan Rodgers both have been central to the foxes amazing stance of the season which leaves them in 2nd in the Premier League Rodgers though has dismissed the suggestion that he will only talk to the players after the January transfer window shop deserves a person piece is speculation going on I think John has had some conversations with representatives as far as results so there s nothing really to help to them or be Jordan Murphy says that Leicester Tigers international players will feature against a telly a minnow as Calver saw no tomorrow in the Challenge Cup Tigers are expected to win comfortably but Murphy says that he won t just play the kids and be a tougher challenge I think this week away from having surfacing to have a Santa so the guys who go need to be really enthusiastic need to be the best man to go on and get a result for tigers and an instant because Scottish Open Mark Selby beat Jimmy Robertson by 4 frames to non The more from me in half an hour but for now that s all you latest b.b.c. Radio Leicester needs Thank you Rob weather today cloudy to start with a few showers about as well those showers will be on and off throughout the day maybe even a sunny spell in the mix too if you re particularly lucky but is feeling cold temperatures 7 Celsius. We ve. Was. Was. Was. We ve. Was. Was. Was. Revoked we ve. We ve we ve. We ve. Yes wow. Wow wow wow. Wow. Wow. Wow Wow. Wow Wow But. we were when he would Mark thanks don t pair on b.b.c. Radio last we are reporting we ve been reporting all morning on the results of the general election delighted to say I could speak to one of annually elected and pays Claudia Webb was voted in at last to east but a 5000 votes just over 25000 votes achieved good morning told you congratulations. Good morning I m should just say that that is a 16 percent fewer votes than your pretty defense the case has had last time so a win with you know a massive reduction in numbers and that does seem to reflect the picture of labor across the country terrible night for labor what has gone wrong with your party. But it was a difficult but was a great win in less than I m delighted to and proud to be appt West were present last. That we were able to hold the seat despite the division that was that had happened locally and despite Jeremy Lin as well was the the party. Of course didn t do so world Cross Country this was a him election. That the public made clear was made clear across the country that this is an election about broke and it was a breakthrough election and the country in a sense had made a decision about Briggs s and they essentially wanted to go ahead with the conservative position on Berkeley that was what the selection was about and it was a problem with Labor that Jeremy Corbett hasn t stated to present position a clear position on Bracks it which left a lot of labor supporters rather confused and unclear enough opting for other parties those 2 positions. For example should make clear the conservative position and in fact. That the position. In terms of remain the fact that Labor spoke to both leave and remain was the right thing to do and I was I don t think is the right failed categorically. It was right that we sought to bring the country together. So it was important that we that label I mean that. The Labor Party in Germany coping with the only people seeking in the country together to unite the country spreads it has been the divisive I mean the sense was right I m I m I started by the fact that Labor so to speak to both leave and remain at the same time this is. Because it was a tactic that Jeremy Cobain used it didn t work as has he been though the right leader for labor during this period because a lot of people have told us that they would have voted Labor but they could not countenance Jeremy Corbyn as their leader as their prime minister. Jeremy is brought great hope and clearly a clear position between ourselves and the conservatives what we had was 10 years austerity germy delivered for the Labor Party a change for the country a change moving away from us there will be an anti there will Tea Party it was a clear position of hope and change for the future I mean the way that the position of been anti used to stop 10 years of that would be part of the conservative the delivered nothing but poverty and inequality people haven t the kind of people have unlimited for that though and the problem is that there is going to be a new rail and labor leader had there who should be l abbé and what direction should the party be going into now this was a this was a vote the country made decided not to have a vote about about a clear direction about Briggs it it is far too early for me to say. Who should lead the party into the next election Joey May has made clear that he intends to lead into the next election do you think you just do you think he is the right man do you think he is the right man you sound that he really. That he s delivered for the Labor Party a clear vision and he s been a great leader you know there is not. One there was not one time Labor Party candidate didn t believe that our manifesto was was a brilliant and it was it was a great money 1st and if we d moved in a cent and made our decision absolutely clearly in terms of the country making this decision absolutely clear about where it wants to be Gregg s it then the reality is the money 1st set out the Labor Party money 1st set out a very clear position you know how good to talk to inequality poverty the the the the devastating roughly in homelessness that with the lack of investment in public service people if you could enable children to see a future ahead of them we had a brilliant mind the 1st that was led and lifted 1st part germy coping need to be a great leader and we ve got a very good. Position in terms of tackling the asperity the even even with the conservative majority 70 I don t does that really indicate that Jeremy Corbyn has been a great leader running a fabulous manifesto. Money if there isn t one Labor Party others indicated one Candy the country didn t believe that we had a great money for that there was a one person believe that so we went into the election set to deliver the change that and transformation that the country needed the country decided that he wanted to get it make a very clear decision about that s what the country. Yesterday So and So in listening to that we you know we as a party are clearly listened to that we set the result that the conservatives have got the right not to deliver the drugs it that they have chosen to put forward but it won t do anything about the jobs and investment needed it won t tackle and protect peace in Northern Ireland it won t protect the hard won rights that we have fought for in terms of environmental and human rights and I think that I will be going into government to fight hard for the jobs and investments that the people of left East need for the quality education investment they need for our n.h.s. Schools and ensuring that people have a decent. Home and ensure with the Ok any quality in poverty and Claudia Webb the agenda as the m.p. For left the east thank you so much Claudia Webb brand new labor m.p. Celeste Aist voted in last night and will be joining her colleagues new colleagues in Parliament on Tuesday time now it s quarter to 9 let some look at the road shall we with Karen thanks Aviemore problems continue on the m 69 have nearly Raxton here and spoilage place are advising 2 lanes will be closed for at least a couple of hours last the clean up happens look at the cameras there really struck . Around the area at the moment to doing this morning on campus that road between Camp stop and southwestern is currently unpassable and emergency 7 truck waterworks happening this morning on new parks white just around the junction of Aikman avenue for now you ve got the very latest I ll have more for you in 20 minutes. And news. Radio the news that you are waking up to this morning of the conservatives have won the general election with Boris Johnson set for a comfortable majority of more than 7 Well we re joined from Westminster with our political correspondent Paul Rowley a veteran of 3 occasions Paul come on what do you make of it all well it s my 13th general election idea as a as a journalist and it s another general election shock something we ve kind of got used to in recent years Boris Johnson securing the conservatives biggest victory in more than 30 years taking seats brutally in the middle and in the north of England where they could only have dreamed about in recent years places like Bligh s Valley Bolsover and leave all former mining towns now voting Tory but significantly 80 of these gains of of large urban areas which voted to leave the European Union 3 and a half years ago in the referendum in contrast it was Labour s worst result since $935.00 since before the 2nd World War even worse than it was in 1903 under Michael foot s leadership for the Liberal Democrats of the starting this campaign saying they wanted to win an overall majority Well they ve gone backwards at the last election there are a dozen seats they ve now got just 11 among the casualties their leader Joseph Winston So in what has been the 3rd general election 18 a little over 4 and a half years and the 1st in December in almost a century and we have witnessed something of a political earthquake overnight I don t know where 3 came from 3 coast. I think I need some glasses yeah yeah how did Boris Johnson how did he mastermind this well by having a simple message frankly those 3 little words no not those but gets breaks it down the prime minister who s been sneered at by some accused of being a liar by others even seen to be hiding in a fridge the other day avoiding television debates a man with an awful lot of personal baggage but he clearly has got something he s now on courses or any 2 results still to be declared with a majority of 78 you ve got to go back to Margaret Thatcher s days in the late 1980 s. Aided to see a conservative victory as healthy as this difference this time is that Boris Johnson has won seats even Margaret Thatcher failed to win places like Sage field Tony Blair s former seat that s gone Tory in the short term though he gives the prime minister the authority now to deliver Bracks it or at least to get his withdrawal agreement through Parliament we understand they will be a key vote on this a week today then they ll rise for Christmas and I hope to get through Britain leaving the European Union by the end of next month in the long term though frankly 80 Boris Johnson now has effectively untrammeled authority did to do whatever he wants for the next 4 or 5 years we keep using the word catastrophic a catastrophic night for labor where where do they go from a common could we expect any resignations day do you think maybe not today but Jeremy Corbyn is saying he s going to stand down a suspect is effective deputy John McDonald has shadow chancellor will also go as well they ll have to have a new leader some will say that corporatism has failed they re almost the most socialist manifesto we ve seen since the days of Michael Ford lots of free stuff the renationalisation of what we used to call the Public Utilities a massive spending program maybe some voters didn t believe they could afford it or deliver it that I suspect will have to change so you re looking at. Someone like you would of thought secure Starmer the shadow brakes a 2nd a former Director of Public Prosecutions he certainly got authority and maybe Emily Thornberry the shadow foreign secretary she will be Labour s 1st woman leader or maybe looking at someone like Jess Phillips after the West Midlands very prominent figure in politics Angela Raina Rebecca long Bailey also in the shadow cabinet potential successors to Jeremy Corbyn but the way that the Labor Party operates they do have a rather a labyrinth process is probably going to take several months for that to be resolved at the moment the recent Even the deputy because Tom Watson a stood down and as an m.p. As well so there will be a certain vacuum you would have thought effectively for the next few weeks and months and then if you had just a moment go forward Claudio Webb on m.p. For less than she was saying that the gentleman got absolutely bang on but but Brick s it was easier than doing what was your stance on that the revote to support Jeremy Corbyn will say that the others Labor M.P. s and in some cases former Labor M.P. s from this morning say on the doorstep the leader s name was part toxic He did so well last time around defying expectations to narrow or cost or to Theresa May have majority you know it s a very rare thing for an opposition Labor leader to have 2 shots at it Neil can it was the last in the 1980s but that view is shared by some in the Labor Party has a lot of supporters but I think they will have to change if they re going to stand any chance of winning the next election difficulty is that could be now 45 years away Oh thank you ever so much for joining is John is in for Ben Jackson between 9 and 12 Kendall live on the Rue Paul show you will find it well she s got plans for us after Robert. Hill once and. For once in your. That it be. Good. To sing. Robyn Williams And time to change Reporter Johnny in the 3rd Ben from 9 you ve got Liz Kendall which is going to have her all that ropes it was Yeah Liz Kendall definitely joining us this morning on the mid-morning program of course she won by a narrow margin in the elections so we will let check her out find out what she has she feels about it and hopefully catch up with the anyone else that you ve missed on the breakfast show and hopefully some of the employees around Leicestershire Raechel and as well apart from that we re going to be like me things up a little bit because we ve got some good news as far as the scooter club are concerned if you know the scooter club you ve been listening to Ben s program regularly and if you re listening at the weekends they have been delivering toys around the city and to the county we re going to find out about a rather large donation of toys to them a little later on the program and you going to meet the former Army medic who turns to artistic skills to help other veterans that and much more coming up between 9 and 12 this morning as Ben Jackson has a. Could sleep should I say. I from the start you were you stole my car and I you know we re going to. Let you see the far. North. Oh. Oh it s. This news and she. Beautiful a new. Just give me a reason Blimey watch one of the morning shot what a night and it continues with grouper a journey with that with you on Monday morning from 6 Have a great weekend but do not go anywhere yes in case you don t know what s happening in the country as far as the elections concerned will bring you a round up between 9 and 12 and hopefully catch up with some of those M.P. s that we haven t managed to speak to so far this morning around Leicester Leicestershire Amrapali to stay with me stories music my. B.b.c. Radio last. A very good morning it s 9 o clock on robots and Boris Johnson has promised that he ll get Bragg s it don t know if snow boots by the end of January after the Conservatives win their biggest majority in a general election since the 1980s with one result declared the Tories have 364 seats to Labor s 203 that result is Mr Johnson a clear mandate to take the u.k. Out of the e.u. And speaking this morning he made it clear that that was his priority as the nation hands us this historic mandate we must rise to the challenge and to the level of expectations and Parliament must change so that we in parliament are working for you the British people and that is what we will now do isn t it that is what do I do Let s next go out let s go out and get on with this unite this country let s spread opportunity to every corner of the u.k. With 2 public education supporting infrastructure and technology let s get bricks it done but 1st my friends let s get breakfast done. For the new conservative m.p. For love bro which was the last constituency to declare here in Leicestershire can t wait to meet when you can stitch. No I m taken understandable no absolutely everything that s going on and that constituency and I want to learn from people from all walks of life from all aspects of life in a constituency to see how I can help will it was Labour s worst performance since 1935 the party lost a swathe of former strongholds in the north of England and Wales in areas that voted to leave in the referendum Jeremy Corbyn said he wouldn t lead the party at another election describing the result as a very disappointing for the labor m.e.p. For the millions Rory Palmer has told is that Jeremy Corbyn is squarely to blame Jeremy Corbyn could not do anything more appropriate this morning that resign as leader of the Labor party he should Sorry statements yes I wouldn t lead us into a general election that he should not lead us into this weekend Never mind the next general election with a new m.p. For Leicester East Claudia Webb hands back to Mr Tobin direct all you delivered for the Labor Party cleavage in and week in a great leader who you know there is not one that was not one can be the Labor Party candidate It didn t believe that our manifesto was a was a brilliant and it was it was a great money 1st the so just a quick round up of what happened here in Leicestershire no change really left there remains labor the Tories want all the seats out in the county we do have form new m.p. So and there s more women than ever we ve been asking for your views out in Leicester the clocktower this morning I m really proud of Leicester for sticking with our Eva . I m very low down we have Tories for many years we ve heard I was out of I think it s a result we needed I think Boris is going to take things forward it breaks it down the northern I m not unhappy. Because the back of the nation as a country and definitely as an immigrant myself I don t feel like I belong here anymore there will be more reaction of course with ripple of the next few hours here on b.b.c. You know I was praying for a hung parliament so more of a balanced viewpoint to represent the country s interest cost of a long way from a fix a long way from a hung parliament what could Boris Johnson do to make you feel less than happy this morning. I think you could have a real discussion around bricks. Bricks off the table. If you try and bring people together listen to the views I think there s a real concern that the state is being straight the last 10 years with us hospitals schools investment in the climate do you think he realizes that because in a he s he the concert is a one in places where they would have been expecting to win or not are not talking about the South where we are talking about up north just below Scotland round there are 3 areas that I think they really care they ve got such a massive majority they can do what they want like it s ride roughshod 1st and implement their policies with the strong checks and balances in his victory speech in the middle of a NY in Oxbridge he said he wanted to be a One Nation conservative do you think because he s got such a thumping majority he can leave some of the more extreme bits of his party behind move a little bit more toward the center and perhaps do some of those things that you re talking about Matthew to you may break maybe but then how long ago was it 3 months ago and pretty much expelled almost 21 nation members of his government because he voted against Brecht voted against Rex it twice. Not the most . Trustworthy politician other than that of them breaks it what s your biggest concern for the next 5 years. I think the biggest concern is that it is really about the state infrastructure the time that the rich are getting richer we need to support you cation of young children to. You know our country s getting older is a lot of immigrants are brought into this country to support our services whether the n.h.s. Or their real concern about that and about whether workers rights get thrown out the window or exit as well. Matthew stay in touch thank you for your call this morning Matthew and hope with these immediate reactions to the result overnight tonight of course I d like to hear from you you can call me you can text me 81333 Start your message with the word radio email Danny Dot pike at b.b.c. Dot u.k. So those gains for the conservatives were made generally at Labor s expense overnight in its traditional heartlands Jeremy Corbyn said he wouldn t lead the party into another election the Lib Dems leader lost her seat and resigned the leadership of the party in Sussex and sorry it was more of a story of small adjustments or no movement at all in the political landscape rather than seismic change let s tell you what happened while most of us were asleep sorry in a moment but 1st of all our political reporter in Sussex Ben vice with the story of the night in Sussex County in Sussex we are where we were in 2015 more than 3 quarters of voters in Sussex backed one of the 2 big parties Labor in the Conservatives and almost twice as many people went for Tories than labor and that left us with an electoral map that was a city of blue with just the 3 Brighton and Hove constituencies left to Karl kept his seat Lord Russell Moore kept his seat Caroline Lucas kept her seat to you you know really reminiscent of 2015 it s almost as if nothing has changed to coin a phrase but nationally it has changed and tear all night for the Labor Party and a great night for Boris Johnson s conservatives so which one joined there with 1st let s deal with Labor and what they do next because Jeremy called and in his speeches into north saying he was pleased to be there m.p. Again also said he wouldn t be the leader at the next election whenever that might be indeed and he didn t go as far as some people would have liked him to I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign there are some in his party particularly the coolest on the left who will think that s completely fine there are others though like Peter Carl on the right of the Labor Party who are furious at that suggestion I mean I was speaking to Peter Carl shortly after he was re-elected and he made no bones about it he felt the. Jeremy Corbyn carried the can for Labour s massive defeat and that it was completely unacceptable in his view for the person responsible for this mess to be to try and stay around and fix it dippy to pin down what it was was it Jeremy Corbin s unclear position a lot on break say or was it renationalisation the railways and utilities and things like that what was it that people didn t like about what Jeremy called them was offering to Peter give an insight into what he thought well he mentioned those things but also I think he felt you know the failure to tackle anti semitism was something that Peter brought to Pim self Lloyd Russell Moyle you know continues in Brighton Kemp Town his victory speech there didn t sound like he thought Corbin is in was dead and buried the conservatives. Have. Had. Jack. Thank you Karen Lucas continues for them the 9th straight year as the Bryan villian m.p. Still the Green Party s only m.p. And elsewhere they didn t do particularly well as she was talking about that the way the voting system works works it works Ok in her favor and brought in the villian it does but it s taken a long time to get to be fair and it s often a flash in the pan either you know it s not a 9 year standing m.p. Now you know and she has found a way to make to make it work in the 1st past the post system I mean the Green Party is completely committed and has been for a long time to changing the electoral system in a vote for 16 year olds you can t do that with one m.p. Indeed we were unsure about what happened nice born with it flip flop again what was the result from response well the conservatives took it back from from the Liberal Democrats and that was always going to be difficult and 2 new Conservative M.P. s in the area so start with Hastings Yes indeed Sally I m hot. The new m.p. And Hastings for the last few days of the campaign she had a bit of a tricky time as it turned out that the Conservative Party is investigating allegations that she shared anti-Semitic and Islamophobia material on social media she said in interviews this evening that that s she feels those allegations are spirits and and she s confident they ll be dealt with quickly because we re hanging over her in the end didn t cause it too much of a problem the Conservatives did increase their majority compared to Amber Rhodes very hairy 2017 result the other new amp a Davis really pleased with our manifesto it s a very balanced and middle of the road manifesto despite what people say this isn t the right this is an extremist tourist Tory party it s one that cares about community and places and that s what I m going to be doing from it s ATSIC formally of this parish actually was that makes people don t probably know know her name or what connection is oh well she she used to be a mid 6 camp counselor but before that she was a travel reporter at b.b.c. Sussex and before my time so quite a long long time ago then work for 6 separate parties has a has a connection to the area went off to be the Tory m.p. And Eastley in Hampshire had given that up at this this election because you know to spend more time with her family yes Nicholas Soames stood down the seats near her family and it s a 6 popped up and there she is and it s a very safe seat she won it as we expected and there s a new m.p. For our and all and South Downs replacing nick her but Andrew Griffith polled 35566 votes that s around a 22 and a half 1000 majority I m humbled by by having been returned with such a large majority for our intell and South Downs but it doesn t mean there s there isn t a lot of work to do and that s what I aim to do the conservatives then so a big majority for them so Boris Johnson can do what he likes what you think he likes to do what we know that he likes Bracks it doesn t yes want to get it done and in the short term that means that we will be leaving. They certainly by the end of January. A couple of the new M.P. s discussing you know discussing rumors that he may well be recalling parliament quickly in trying to get the Bracks it bills passed you know as early as next week so really kind of rushing the process through now he s got that massive majority of course there s that huge manifesto that the Conservatives promised you a lot of promises you know those those 20000 extra police officers those 50000 nurses a lot has been promised in that manifesto they ve been big question marks over their ability to deliver it well now they ve got a majority parliament isn t going to be obstacle Let s see what I can offer can he shut out your Jacob Reese Mark now he doesn t need the argy anymore Dizzee he doesn t know he can pretty much and indeed every single conservative candidate has signed a pledge saying that they will back Boris Johnson s deal in parliament so that bit of Bracks is going to sail through the next it s very difficult the next bit he s negotiating our future relationship with the European Union Boris Johnson has promised that will be done by the end of next year that would be record time for a big free you know a big wide ranging trade deal there s a lot of skepticism he can pull it off but he says he can that s Ben vice our Sussex political reporter back at 7 tonight by the way with further reaction to the local and national stories from election 2019 on politics until tonight at 7 Of course I want your reaction has it gone how you want it how are you feeling about the future today you can text me 1333 Start your message with a word radio love to talk to you to give me a call here s my number cool b.b.c. Sorry 080587104 see c.b.c. Series. Let s talk to our political correspondent in London now Alison McCarthy is in Downing Street so what s been happening there Alessio this morning. Well so far it s been reasonably quiet we think that Boris Johnson is back behind the big black door which I have to say from where I m standing is obscured by the looks of the stimulus Christmas tree but we think he s retreated to number 10 for a cup of tea and a bit relaxed and of course now he s due to go off in some point in the next hour or 2 to see the queen and officially give her the result and ask her to allow him to form a government so that s what we re expecting to happen but at the moment there are a lot of press reporters and a lot of police officers and no sign of the prime minister. Yet he said at the end of his speech or a couple of hours ago that he was getting bricks and breakfast done 1st of all is this a political earthquake we re seeing here today. I think in short yes it absolutely is I mean if just look at some of these figures that we ve had you know Boris Johnson now has 364 plus seats compare that to 298 before the election the Labor Party we want is gone from 243 seats to 203 and just put that in a bit of contacts way back in 1983 which is widely seen as one of Labor s worse results in modern times Labor actually had $209.00 seats that they ve done even worse than that so it is massive and just look at some of the seats that Labor Party s lost they ve lost both Dennis Skinner the man who s been in the common since 1970 the beast the pulse over he s gone they ve lost to the 3 seats that they had in Stoke on Trent Lott and Wakefield That was Don Valley that will live Ali and they even last year which used to be Tony Blair s old seat so Labor is now lost 4 elections on the trot and Gerry called his Lots to so it really is the end of the call been era and they re obviously looking now for a new leader and of course while we re talking new leaders the Lib Dems are also in something of the turmoil this morning they didn t do nearly as well as they were hoping and of course their leader Joseph lost her seat in our area in Sussex sorry north east Hampshire it was small reports or no change at all so those big changes in the north you know places that I ve never had a conservative m.p. Before and they. Wake up today to find themselves that they do what what is it about the conservatives message that has cut through there. Yet well I think there s obviously going to be an awful lot of analysis and an awful lot of post-mortems going on from both parties to see what happened what worked and what didn t and of course at this stage we can only theorize but it would seem to be that the Tories had a very clear message it was very simply get Brecht down we all had it until we were absolutely blue in the face but it does seem to have an impact now there are reports that the contrast in that the labor areas will when Labor were out campaigning Gerry cool been didn t play well on the doorstep personally and also perhaps there was some confusion over Labor s message there Brecht s it policy was a bit more nuanced it was a bit more complicated and then of course there were all the things that Labor was offering to do massive massive spending commitments on everything from you know railways to waspy women and so perhaps there was a bit of confusion among the voters as to what it was that was actually being promised to them and equally there s been some suggestions for the Lib Dems this idea that you know where they took home a majority government which was unlikely they d revoke Breck s it altogether perhaps that was seen as being a bit extreme Alysia thank you very much indeed for joining us today from Downing Street and more to come in the course of a listen McCarthy reporting there she mentioned waspy women there was that big promise from John McDonnell wasn t the shadow chancellor election campaign and the waspy women women who think they ve missed out on pensions that are owed to them because their retirement ages move further and further away we ve spoken to them a lot on this program if you re a waspy woman the Smalling How do you feel maybe your hopes were resting on Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonald putting things right for you get in touch as 11333 Start your message with the word radio as a campaign that Tim Lawton the east we re going to be was heavily involved with do you think he can have an influence on Boris Johnson to again do right by you what do you think. 1333 on the tech start your message with the word radio let s talk about the story in Syria ne Hampshire Jack Fein our political reporter in sorry in some way very similar to other elections Jack but we got 3 new M.P. s in sorry including in Guilford tell us what s happened that s right Johny Yes as you as you suggest broadly speaking it s as you were all 11 constituencies in sorry returning conservatives and the seats in in Hampshire that we follow as well. But I was at the Spectrum leisure center in Guildford last night for the Count s to see Angela Richardson elected as the new conservative then pay for the constituency she replaces the former m.p. Milton who stood as an independent this time around you remember that defied Boris Johnson when she wouldn t countenance a no deal breaks if she voted against the odds. And as a result she was one of $21.00 M.P. s who lost the conservative whip she didn t get it returned to her and she decided to stand as an independent and in the end it just didn t work out Fran and she was her vote was was way down but I spoke to Richard sim to find out how she was feeling off she became the new m.p. It s absolutely overwhelming because this was going to be very close this is the selection here and go for it I don t think anybody knew walking in this evening how this count was going to go I think throughout the whole campaign the polls have had a very very tight here and even as we ve been out campaigning and talking to people and knocking on doors we had no idea whether we were going to be successful tonight absolutely delighted I m relieved because I ve been nervous all day some of the challenges in Guilford the housing issue for example controversial Where do you stand on the Ok well I had a bit of pushback because I was supporting the previous Conservative led ministration on the local plan the thing is Gilford has got to have counseling it s got have housing for its key workers has also got to have housing to keep families together and that was really important to me that sense of community and that s one of the reasons that people voted leave in the referendum is because they didn t feel that sense of community anymore house prices a very expensive and go for it so I don t want people s children and grandchildren feeling like they ve got to move out also don t want to go for it moving up to 34 floors like working has with their high rise development I don t think that s the right thing for Guilford and so the local plan means that housing goes out which but most importantly you ve got to have infrastructure coming in in order to to help with that and the good thing in the. Service of manifesto is that we ve said infrastructure must come 1st not at the end of developments and so I ve got to make sure as the Member of Parliament that I chase up the developers and make sure that any of the monies promised towards infrastructure projects get delivered in a timely manner Angela Richardson the New Guilford m.p. Just over $3000.00 as a majority elsewhere in our area we look at sort of $20000.00 plus majorities for Conservative M.P. s So that s still quite thin Yes I mean the get go food became much closer this time around though it was partly because of the Milton factor but also because of breaks in again there was this idea of the Lib Dems were trying to capitalize on on the remain vote that there was a go for it was one of the barriers that voted to remain and also they ve had some success at the local level they re one of their the biggest party on the bar a council at the moment and they came pretty close down and to be honest they came closer to winning the seat of a few 1000 Anyway the bringing the majority way down it was 17000 for as you say it s no something like 3000 for heaven s old seat Runnymede and Weybridge new m.p. There yes on the chart the chancellor of the Exchequer to a few months ago and he was the m.p. And really be the way bridge since since 9097 but again he was one of the Conservative M.P. s who rebelled against Boris Johnson he lost the whip and what happened this time though is that he decided not to stand when he when he wrote a letter to his constituents saying he s tribal loyalties to the Conservative Party which is too strong he couldn t imagine standing against them so he just decided not to stand at all so instead we have Dr Ben Spencer and he was elected as the new conservative m.p. For anybody to Weybridge and he s been speaking to our reporter just amp it probably will come as no surprise to your listeners that the main thing people been talking about on doorsteps is process and how we have been stuck and how we need to get things moving get things moving nationally in terms of getting back. And I m the country to me. But also locally in terms of investing in our infrastructure and getting up for the fences builds which has been too in the main areas I ve been running my campaign here on what do you hope to achieve through running meeting Weybridge know your employee Well I mean 1st and foremost it s the things I ve set out already which is going in for the fences both as quickly as possible investing more in our infrastructure especially things like improvements on the a free 20 on the rail links but it s more generally it s we continue to be a place of opportunity for everybody and for me that s what conservatives and conservatism is all about making sure everybody no matter what their background is has equal opportunity to get a life and that s why I look forward to working with the prime minister and his team going forward to do us so that s Dr Ben Spencer the new m.p. And running mate away and then a nice sorry we had another rebel we had Sam. Who was who became very pro remain over the last couple of years he eventually defected to the Liberal Democrats tried to win the seat in Kensington but failed last night and his replacement is a woman called. In and this is what she had to say last night and I think people wanted to see us moving forward on Bragg s it and the conservatives were the only policy with a clear vision to do that I think they wanted to see a strong economy and they were very worried about coping with the for the country and they wanted to see investment in public services things that I want to fight for are a fair deal for commuters making sure the trains run on time and dealing with congestion and I want to fight for our fair share of funding for rides and schools and one of the things that s come up on the campaign trail is g.p. Appointments and I m really pleased to see that the conservatives have a clear national plan to hire more G.P. s and I want to make sure that that s felt on the frontline here in the sorry thousands of new homes for South Boston and a lot of anger in your new constituency what I ve heard from people is the concerns that felt by the people. Red Lake residents on the ground I think they re planning inspector is with them now well I m going to be monitoring that very carefully and if there s plant guess we ve got to make sure the community has a say design and the community has safer infrastructure investment and that s what I ll be fighting. The new East sorry m.p. In Jack Feeney b.b.c. Sorry 080-5871 forsakes. Isn t. This. It s obviously. This. Was. In there. It s. Such a. Slow. Just always great to hear his voice George Michael and this is how we want you to get high 90 minutes to 10 election 2019 on b.b.c. Sussex and b.b.c. Sorry Tony Parker I want your reaction to the overnight results which is the Boris Johnson will have a majority of 78 in Parliament Iris in holy hell out how Hello This could all bad for you very good. I didn t agree with any of Cole being ideas for the country I didn t like it followers and I don t think that when we expect the queen or a country. That will get us out of the e.u. The Labor party with a different leader one you can agree more with is that kind of your flavor sometimes you think. It hasn t been for some time because I don t think they were the Labor Party that used to be when was the last time you supported the Labor Party were you kind of agreed with most of their principles very long while ago right without majority big majority 78 you sure Boris can deliver. I m hoping the air have more of a say with the new paper because I think they believe that he couldn t do anything because he didn t have the majority now he s got the majority say how he might be I would say talk them around a bit more and get what we we need well he s got a day on the table and can he deliver it by the end of January I suppose a month or so we ll find out thank you Iris I thank you and I speak to you this case born Bryan is there hello Brian good morning so when you heard the result of the exit poll did you catch that last night what do you think. To be the swing I think it was so maybe see election it was just anybody but Corbin really people look Ok and well quite a lot of people have gone not called in will have conservatives instead so is this good or bad for the country do you think. It must be good for the country because we couldn t afford another Labor administration. I went rogue last time I went broke in back in Wilson s time he claimed the gnomes in spirit because they d gone broke and had to borrow from the International Monetary Fund. And even after the war the Attlee government I struggled at the end so. We can let s not afford another one I m not sure honest few Johnson in his acceptance speech when he won again last night he talked about being One Nation Conservative so is one part of what will happen over the next 5 years but on the other side of things do you think he has the best interests of the nation at heart he probably has he doesn t read over very well he just walks and he still acts like. Which is a great way for an English prime minister to act how about locally your constituency is flip flopped a nice born between the Lib Dems of conservatives currents or backers You can serve m.p. Now is that good or bad for you. Well I mean it s good for the country to get another Tory m.p. In. Did you like Stephen Lloyd your local Lib Dems I don t think leader like him but I must say he were very hard for his constituents I guess you don t have to like him do you think he was good for the town. He did his best anyway so. He will never bully went against his party because that s what the constituents voted for to leave. Frank said he did everything right it s cost of Missy to isn t it. Ok Brian thank you very much for your call today I want 333 my text message with the word radio or give me a ring all 80587 want to. Thank you for your text 2 parties set out to subvert and deny a national referendum decision and yesterday is the result let s move towards better more responsive politics I hope all politicians take note I m resolved in the future to have great respect for democracy says Jewett 1333 a text number start your message with radio. Calls and comments coming up Brian Adams m l c When you re gone. I am. Brian Adams and male senior and when you re gone 12 minutes to 10 your reaction to the result of election 2019 which ends up with the Conservative Party having 45 percent of the votes yesterday in the election Labor 33 percent liberal Democrats 12 percent of the votes s.n.p. With 4 percent and the Green Party with 3 percent of the vote but all that shakes out to a $78.00 majority for the conservatives this text says I don t understand how a party that s done so badly over the last 9 years has got a majority really disappointing says our text what can someone explain that to me then text me or call me and tell me how a party that s been doing so badly according to a text over the last 9 years has got a majority How is that come about today 81333 my text numbers start your message with the word radio I suppose you have to argue against that they re actually in that 9 years they ve won some elections haven t they and they ve won another big one now so have they really done batting well in terms of electoral success they ve done well but perhaps you don t like what they do when they re in power so give me a response to that this tech says we just have to give Boris a chance let s face it Jeremy Corbyn sat on the fence regarding BRICs it as for Joe Swinson she started off too sure of herself so it s time to stop moaning now yet Joe Swinson lost her seat and resigned the leadership of the Liberal Democrat party overnight and I was asking you before to give us your reaction to when the exit poll was revealed at 10 o clock last night this Texan who doesn t leave a name says My reaction was God help us all now we re all doomed thanks to the blinkered affluent and ill thought out beliefs of the blue supporters Shame on you sorry help. It s not unusual to have an old blue sorry is it 1333 The text on the Start your message with the word right here surely in Guilford Good morning your new m p Angela Richardson How do you feel about that yes when I m let s put this. I would like to quickly say I m very sorry to hear the demise of milk because she s been a very long standing and very very good m.p. For Guilford But having said that please a conservative 13 but I am a little about. Boris Johnson in this match that I think I think he could tend to bulldoze through a free thing Georgie of 78 he certainly could yes and that you see he won t get a lot of opposition and I think he wants to be careful what he says because people will lap it up. For example thought was we could have all these cells adult is where are they coming from because it takes 7 years to train adult the nurses that he s been going on about $50000.00 nurses whether that s just off or attentional bringing in you know ses Yes but then don t forget it takes about 3 years to train a nurse Yeah Ok I mean I don t think you know he said he s a magical mouth in ad but he says he s in for the funding into half of them. Yes but you can t rush tide. You don t rush perhaps it s a work in progress Well yes be good but to go slowly don t rush and name we end up with a very very bad wreck his a thought here s a thought surely in terms of brakes it before perhaps Boris Johnson had to rely a little bit more on the support of your Jacob Reese mall and your. European Research Group because his majority was so slim with a bigger majority now do you think he could kind of sideline some of those more extreme elements in his party because he really doesn t need them so they can go off and stew in the corner maybe as as he would see it and actually come a little bit more towards the center and take more people with him and certainly pay back home those votes he s got in the north of the country and look after the people there who voted for him against what in some constituencies is something that s never happened before I ve never had a conservative m.p. No I don t think he should go more middle of the road because we aren t there yet this is only just to say we ve got all the other things ahead of us we ve got the borders we ve got the trade we ve got everything it is going to take years probably not a one term and you know these things unless you just go straight through with an eye regardless of what s good and bad is the same worries me Ok show you thanks stay in touch Let s go to Brighton Hugh is there morning here good morning how are you feeling today. This according to. What I am to be British. What in particular is upsetting you. Well obviously. Not story basis. And I m just surprised that this has happened I mean kind of for it coming. Yeah. Why do you think it s happened I think a lot of people had no face in labor I think it was and so much that they wanted the Tories in it that they didn t like the Labor Party so. Right Ok so you laying the blame at the door of labor for being a poor opposition to Boris Johnson who is facing he dodged some of the big political interviews didn t he lots of questions about his personal behavior or morality or lies or whatever it is so with all that stacked against him he still managed to see off Jeremy Corbin s party yeah. But was my mind a bit I mean me in the fridge yesterday. Was that was a moment wasn t it but that didn t you know that obviously hasn t dented anybody s For people want to vote it was it was a moment in time wasn t it didn t put people off voting for his party I just I just don t get it I can t see how anyone could vote for somebody hard to preach I mean it when he well. Perhaps people have to vote for him because the alternative is even worse do you think that s a lot of some a lot of people thinking I think that s a lot of people say Right so what does the Labor Party need to do next you. Really don t know they need to I think they certainly need to have a sit down and talk and really decide what direction they want to go in and who they are how quickly does that need to happen they really. Very quickly I think but I mean obviously. He is no but you could change the party and try to be a and effective opposition as you can be so should Jeremy Corbyn go to day or like he said overnight stay with the party and see the process through to a new leader I mean that could be the spring couldn t it could be the end of the spring yeah yeah I mean it could be a few months I do think he s right to stay and make sure things are sorted out properly really think it s going to take more than just one person I think it s going to take a lot to really turn the Labor Party around and direction as a Labor voter who s the obvious leader. That s the question well that s appalling for a party if you haven t got a succession plan where you ve got an obvious next leader in the running so somebody who s voted Labor You voted Labor on Thursday digit Yes Ok So you voted Labor and the leader is going and the party doesn t have a clear alternative for you as a Labor voter who s who would easily fit in and perhaps make the party more palatable to more people this is. Yeah I think they need some new blood thank you very much indeed for chatting to us today here in Brighton and Ian and little hands and hi Ian good morning Telesur give us your overview of election 2019 then. Well it s a shame we had an election or had to have an election. I think we should have had a referendum I was against referendum and. It just it. Just a few months ago it seemed so intractable there was no movement one way or the other was there so something had to given it was an election so. In the terms of the result we ve got today a you please with that dismayed with that. Very very because we can just get on and do something now. What you what you reckon timeline do you think the end of January will leave the European Union seems to be the tunnel but that s way beyond what anything I would know about. Far far too complicated but we we can now see a way forward I would be wondering now whether Boris should actually. Alter they. Stopped us negotiating with the option of leaving without that they all. Did not make sense it was a bit convoluted Well I suppose I mean I suppose he could. Go for a softer Breck s it would that suit you on all. The breaks the party had the right overall. Yeah what happened to them by the way. Their own seats well here I say never explicitly expect to get many at all. But their policy have you know keeping on the tribal heartbreaks is the only way that you can negotiate Rice if they had kept everyone else on a spice of nipping at the heels of the Conservative Party not. Only time will tell on that because it depends whether Boris does get a proper breaks I mean my one of my biggest gripes was the European coke I mean that was. Just trying to get out. Or what are lawless and what are jockeys felt about things about the overall I d appreciate it am thank you for your call this morning 1333 my tech summer start your message with the word radio and of course say you can always give us a call today and tell me what you think about the results of the election 29 tape which has returned Boris Johnson to Downing Street probably get his head down for a couple of hours now but a break 1st. What s so hard all night to count for us the returning officers I think my fellow candidates you know that jury. No Bucket Head. And others Elmo and others forgive me if I if I don t if I don t identify them all but I bow bow I want to thank I want to thank the people of this country for turning out to vote in a December election that we didn t want to call it which I think has turned out to be a historic election. Gives us now in this new government the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country and that is what we will now do and if we are lucky enough to be returned as polls as the exit polls seem to suggest then that work will begin to thank you all very much all right I should say not tomorrow today. Thank you I got a spotless Johnson the m.p. For Oxbridge and south Rice who will be will continue to be our prime minister and we can now tell you that the Conservative Party have passed the finishing line they ve got a majority of 4 at the moment so they ve passed the 3 to 6 magic number that makes them the the governing party that s going to go up that s going to go up over the next couple of hours because the still $52.00 seats of the club and Boris Johnson they will have Jeremy Corbyn speech part of that speech in just a few moments after he was reelected for Islam to north but searched it will take is here with me still you should be looking at the the other candidates too with a very high profile ones who switch from one party and went into another one and how they ve been getting on yeah I have and they haven t been getting on well at all you know some of them come 2nd but they certainly haven t been returned to Parliament so Sarah Liston who was a very high profit profile conservative m.p. Dr the m.p. For top ness left the conservatives joined a little democrats contested that seat as a liberal Democrat of top ness and has increased the Liberal Democrat vote quite considerably but still come a very distant 2nd Luciana burger of course formally of this parish so to speak formally the the m.p. The labor m.p. For. Or live a Paul Wavertree we can see the full detail here but she s lost in for interesting Golders Green so she switched the Liberal Democrats switch constituency to goes green and done pretty well increasing the vote share 32 percent there but some way distance from the conservative candidate might free a who s been elected is the m.p. For Finchley and gold is green. And a super e who stood in Broxtowe as a change you k. Again she s in she s done very poorly there actually so she s way off the mark we talked about some game of her for standing in Kensington nobody I come find anybody from that group of M.P. s who switch parties to descend pendants whatever really hasn t worked for them they don t punished at the at the ballot box I mean they probably already were Luciana bad just probably the best because she increased the vote by 25 percent yeah but nowhere near enough she was still still sure by 6 and a half 1000 votes and as you know it s ended a lot of political careers and you know people really when the son of a 1st became an m.p. Here in Liverpool people predicted she had a really bright future she was young at the time very talented and so on and you know it looks like that s it looks like a political career is over she s not the only one there are many many others their careers have been brought to an end by these last few years in British politics and as someone who has other long political career I m a career is still there is the current leader of the Labor Party Jeremy Corbin he was elected and I for his is linked to North seats and this is what he had to say straight after that election also make it clear that I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign I will discuss with our party. To ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward and I will lead the party during that period to ensure that discussion takes place and we move on into the future. Because I m very proud of the trust that our half 1000000 members put in me to lead this party and I m very proud of the way that we fought this election campaign we did not descend into the gutter we did not undertake personal abuse we undertook the task of getting a message of hope and justice to every part of this country and I m very grateful to the Labor Party listening to north of being very tolerant of the fact that I didn t spend as much time in this election campaigning is in turn as obviously I would want to do because I ve been travelling around the whole country to ensure that Labor s message is put there but I want to say this. I will remain the m.p. For easing to Nourse I m proud to represent the people of his into North and I m proud in Parliament and outside that we will forever continue the cause for socialism for social justice and for a society based on the needs of all rather than the greed of a few that is what makes our party what it is and I m very proud of the achievements of our party in the development of its manifesto and its ideas and I tell you what those ideas and those principles are eternal and there will be there for all time I thank the people of his into north once again putting their faith and trust in me I will work as I always have says to represent and defend the people of my constituency because they re very special and I owe them so much and they have all taught me so much thank you very much. I m going to generate call been elected re-elected as the m.p. For Islam to north still the leader of the Labor Party does he make quite clear they re not going to be leading the Labor Party into another general election and at the moment Stuart that general election is 5 years away it will be it will be 5 years absolutely there s no reason for the conservatives I can imagine to want to go to the polls any soon or to try to have a fixed term parliaments act so they ve got 5 years to deliver bricks get the trade deal that they need with the European Union and try and deliver on the promises that they ve made to the electorate and try to really convert permanently or permanently those voters in those traditional labor areas that they ve brought over to them to have to party they need to try and keep them if they want to be returned again but if they got 5 years to do it we re talking a few moments about the future of labor where they go from here and also the leadership of one of the M.P. s that was reelected tonight was Angela Eagle re-elected for Wallasey. This is what she had to say after about reelection but I am delighted with my own result but obviously it s changed with a great deal of regret and sadness about what s happening in the country as a whole huge mixed emotions in here for the Labor victors tonight what do you make of what s unfolding at the moment nationally Well it s hard to know at the minute as we re in our own camps but I do know that we ve obviously got some serious questions to answer about how we ve judged our appeal and how we ve tried to get our arguments and alcohol use across and I think that we ve got to have a no holds barred examination of what went wrong perhaps organizationally and in other ways but the middle of the night in account isn t the time to do it it s time to go home get a bit of sleep and then gear up to get as back into government when we ve learned the lessons that the British electorate given to us tonight Kitty Jeremy Corbyn should resign that s a matter for him at the moment I m not going to make any calls tonight about who should do what but I think everybody needs to look at the role they played in the last few years and think about how we can get the Labor Party into government so it can make our society a fairer and better society and just no point in being in the Labor Party if we re not going to be in government and so that has got to be a rame it looks like we re going to be a lot further away from achieving that aim after tonight and therefore we ve got to listen to the lessons that the electorate are talking to us about and change and just finally what s your priority for Wallasey going forward to protect it from what I think is going to be the potential of an extremely hard and damaging breaks it which will damage our economy more uncertainty about what kind of trade deal we can do and. The most right wing conservative government I think we ve seen since Margaret Thatcher got a central Eagle still the m.p. For. Wallasey but will be going back to the house of parliament and the House of Commons to it with a very very different political makeup than we had a couple of days ago a very very different make up it s not just that we now have a majority government and you know we did briefly have a majority government 152027 but but not with a very large majority to be honest so it s some time since we ve had a government with a majority of this size so that s the 1st thing which is different but the other thing which is different I think is this whole process of bricks and the elections we ve had and the kind of Turmel that we ve seen in politics has caused a lot of people to to leave politics all together who were in the Commons the people they ve been replaced with his parliamentary candidates in both the Conservative Party and Labor party up in people much more in line with the leaders of those parties so the Conservative Party now is very very clearly a leave Party very different party to the other one of Ken Clarke and all those of the people have gone and the Labor Party s different as well so those those Labor s lost M.P. s but the new ones who ve come in replacing other Labor M.P. s they ll be far more loyal to g.m. Corben who s about to go of course and so there will be new star Labor M.P. s So the parties will be coming in terms of the parliamentary base more polarized than ever before and the some big political names who won t be there were of course locally Frank Fields was not reelected so I started as an independent and one of the longer standard M.P. s The so called The Beast of balls over Stuart s That s right Dennis Skinner Dennis Skinner has gone so I mean almost unthinkable but so many things are almost unthinkable a big swing big swing to the conservatives impulse over 11 and a half percent that unseat Dennis Skinner really I mean it s unthinkable really a conservative m.p. Impulse over almost unthinkable that tennis can. Could lose an election there so yeah all part of this huge change in who is in power still would. Be called has made it very clear they won t be leading the party into the next election he hasn t resigned as yet and I guess from his point of view there s there s no speed to do that at the moment. Where does the Labor Party go from here you know what what what what can they look back over to learn from history about how they get back into a position of power where labor s been in positions analogous to this before and the one that s probably most similar 1983 so this is a defeat as it was the night in $83.00 but it s a similar scale and in many ways in there are the comparisons to the party turn to the left at that time the leader didn t have a good election in 1803 Michael Foot so you could go that way as a Labor Party you could go the way that they did then which is move back to the center ground modernising that ultimately ends up with New Labor that took a very long time in terms of getting Labor back into power and it s hard to see where that impetus would come from right now so I think what s going to happen right now is a lot of soul searching among Labor members and Labor M.P. s who are now you know on average far more left wing than those equivalent people were 1015 years ago I think it s going to be a bit of a bloodbath to be honest within the Labor Party and it will take them some time until they know where they want to move to I don t know how long Jeremy Colvin will preside over this process it does seem like he s not going immediately but it s going to be very difficult for them very very difficult but also very interesting because you know prior to this election certainly going back a couple of months we had a parliamentary Labor Party who would seem to be not completely out of step but but there are lots of people who are out of step with the with the membership and now there s far fewer of those more right wing Labor M.P. s there. Because they ve left yeah been diesel acted whatever the parliamentary Labor policy small of the it is is actually more closely allied to the membership now well that and that was something which you know all those people who joined the Labor Party became more active in the Labor Party and the Jeremy Corp in the ship that s one of the things that they ve wanted to happen they wanted the M.P. s to be more reflective of the membership in the activists as a whole they also wanted to win a general election and form a government and so yeah I mean that has happened whether the Labor Party is more in line with the electorate where it seems not from these results so what does the Labor Party need to do if they want to advance that kind of manifesto which we ve just seen and I think you know there is some validity to the claim that many of Labor s policies were popular but they are the kind of things that people want debated in British politics right now they were popular in 2017 perhaps not this time but if that s the kind of agenda that Labor want to move forward with they need to sell that to the public and that s clearly not happen this time just let some look at Northern Ireland for a moment because you know when you look back for the 678 months every news bulletin was talking about the role of the Di you pay what a strong position they had because they were holding the balance of power right and now you know the whole thing is changed they ve lost the last to see some of the going down from 10 seats to 8 seats and they re not needed anymore I mean so the d.d.p. Were in this incredible position of power really so then when the 1st thing that we gave them was this ability to bargain with the Conservative Party to bring extra funding into into Northern Ireland so you know that was a real result for them and then of course after treason may call the election 2017 and lost a majority and it also meant that they were in an incredibly strong position within the BRICs process and and so on and. You know they played a very very hard game throughout that sometimes I wondered whether the d.p. Ever really wanted bricks at all and whether they were actually just trying to find ways of avoid it by claiming while still claiming they always wanted it but now that you know they re out of the picture in terms of influencing the u.k. Government and that s going to be hard for them it really is yeah you re listening to b.b.c. Radio mostly sad it is our election special from now till 6 o clock another 14 minutes to go which points Nelly will be here with Claire Hamilton for the breakfast show between $6.00 and 9 o clock. B.b.c. Radio in May She started. A locally we are only waiting for one more result now Ellesmere Port a nest is the only local area to declare but one m.p. That was reelected a little earlier was for Will South Alison McGovern and this is what I was McGovern had to say 1st of all our congratulations on your hands if you will to be reelected for m.p. As well south. Well I m proud really proud to have been reelected for the 4th time for the place I was born the place I grew up and the place I love the most. It s obviously devastating to see the national picture and my fight for people and we re also just got a lot harder and I and I was so. You know we ve. In this campaign we ve seen in the rough sleeping all around us we know what s going on with food banks in this country and I am so devastated that our fight to end those things in our country looks like it just got a lot hotter where does the Labor Party go from here well we have to listen and learn. And you know we have to change. Jeremy Corbyn should still be a leader that s for him that s for him I mean you know we ve got to change if I may I don t think it s about one person I think it s about all of us how do you think your connection with the local people in the area in your local connections helps you win this election Oh I mean people have really really kind to me honestly I know that politics is of really really difficult thing at the moment and a lot of people don t even really want to talk about politics but you know if you could have come campaigning with me a little south you would you would have heard people talk to me and in a respectful and decent way and I m so grateful for that the other Thomason McGovern who is the. Well she s the mph Stiliyan people will South let s bring it up to date with the national picture the Conservative Party now have a majority of $26.00 seats that s still going to increase a little bit more I would suggest the still $36.00 seats to declare and so the $65614.00 declared so far labor is well short of the majority they need that by a $126.00 seats so it s been a very very bad night for labor steelworks Craig. Yeah it incredibly bad bad result for labor worse than anybody was expecting the polls didn t really predict anything quite on this scale certainly last couple of weeks and it s going to be really really tough for labor from here I mean it s really going to be quite a process for them to get back in contention we know that Eric Corbin is not going to contest the next general election as leader he said so the need to be a process of change within the Labor Party how that happens when that happens remains to be seen but this is the worst result for Labor in modern times have to go back a very very long way you have to go back even further than 1983 which was the in or the last terrible result fellate of labor to find anything this bad zone I mean I m sure they ll be and our allies in this and people like yourselves will be about about where where it went wrong was it because they just put too many ideas forward it was simply they just got Brecht s it wrong you know people just didn t like the policies what was the main reason the people didn t vote for them well I mean we can only speculate at this point in time it will require a lot of serious analysis to try and pin that down and they ll be a lot of argument about what the reasons are but from my point of view I do think labor some extent they tried to replay what worked in 2017 it worked very well for them then they expect the same kind of outcome so they went into the election way behind in the polls they thought they could narrow the polls again it seemed to be working. There was a belief in the Labor Party that if they advanced the same radical manifesto ambitious manifesto for Britain than they could really really win voters round as they did before and I think there was still a hope that Labor could straddle this breaks it divide that they could still appeal to remain voters and leave voters simle Taney Asli and ultimately the. Time that was expressed in Jeremy Corbyn strategy of having a 2nd referendum after renegotiating the prick s a deal yet again and he would remain neutral in this in the 2nd referendum I think people just didn t buy that I just didn t work and you know some of the things that worked in 2017 really didn t work in 2019 and I was up against a different opponent who played a different game to reason me as well so yeah I mean I think those are some of the reasons and of course there was also this issue of anti-Semitism which just wouldn t go away and it came back to haunt him again and again and again I mean I know that these days you know the art of politics is a very scientific r.t. You know and we ve got all the social media thrown in and everything else these days but you know could it just be that leaving aside all the policies of all the parties the you know the end of the day it was just the messages that worked for the conservatives and didn t work for Labor Well you know messaging is incredibly important in politics and parties that win elections tend to understand that very very well and you know I have to say the conservatives you know they did it very very often and this election you know Boris Johnson and the conservatives they ve had a few very simple messages repeated ad nauseum I mean the number of times before followed Boris Johnson on Twitter I mean every tweet is let s get bricks and everything that we hear tonight you know all of the audio is him saying now we can get bricks and so on so it s all the same kind of you know sound bites but if you get those right then they work and you know it has taken a long time I think there are a lot of people who do feel let s just get it done now so that was one message the other message was no tax rises which then later on turned into tax cuts and then it was you know more police officers more nurses more hospitals. Simple messages and that really did the trick I think yeah one that I wondered a lot certainly what it s looking like the moments look in the world at the moment the conserves are going to majority of 32 that s going to increase as the last results come in and we thought you want to go one of which is one of our own Ellesmere Port and that s the most whites of about results go by let s hope we get that before we go off and in fact we maybe get not resold for very very shortly but we ll find out in just a few moments straight after the births hand let s not forget Christmas is around the corner is 2000 miles. 2000 miles that is 20 minutes to 6 o clock on a Friday morning Paul Beasley here with the general election special on b.b.c. Radio much you saw it works break from the university level has been with us all nice and will still be here for another half an hour. Is going to hear the breakfast show with. Claire Hamilton at 6 o clock bring you bang up to date we we are almost got well we have got the final result will let you know that in just a few moments for Ellesmere Port and nest and one of our M.P. s who was re-elected tonight was Maria Eagle elected for gas them hell world and this is what Maria Eagle had to say her body from the lead down is accepted that there s an issue I think it s clear that we haven t dealt with it well enough and said didn t know and comprehensively enough and I mean I ve been on the doorstep in my constituency and on the places for the last 6 weeks and it has come up and and it it s right that it should come up and we have to deal with it but again Larry the Eagle Garstin hell would you be just waking up at the moment getting an early start you ll be waking up to the news that since Conservative Party are still the party of governments with a very much increased majority of what they had before the election was called they ve taken a whole raft of seats at the moment they got a 40 seat majority with still 26 seats declared if you wake you know up and you have a view on how the election is gone locally or nationally you can give us a call if you want to it s always 873193 double $3.00 No your views did your preferred party come into power you may have voted for a party that was elected or not elected may be the local party where there s been very very little change locally throughout the area there has been a some pockets where the could have been change but the has been no change at all apart from Washington. Has changed hands that s the seat of Warrington south and the new m.p. For Warrington south for the Conservatives is Andy Card and this is what Andy cards I had to say immediately after his election is just starting to sink in actually I m delighted that people are more into the South but I trust him a. There s a clear message on the doorstep that people wanted democracy to be respected and that is something that we will do with a conservative majority government and I m looking forward to joining various Johnson and fellow conservatives in the House of Commons next week you will work as a consultant helping companies export things around the world you know that things over the next few months and years are not going to be as simple as get it done don t you I think you know that the clear message that we heard on the doorstep was we needed to move forward we need to break the deadlock and move forward and I think yes that there are still a lot of things to be decided but a free trade option is available to us and I think that s something we can move forward with very quickly and I think you know that the majority that I suspect we re going to have as a Conservative government will allow us to move those those steps of legislation through Westminster very quickly and just finally tell us what you going to be shouting about in terms of warrant on the Northwest when you get to take your seat on the green benches I think you know infrastructure in the northwest is really crucial I m I m delighted that there s a pledge to look at the Powerhouse right I think we need to station in Washington south that connects into into northern pastoral so I ll be pushing hard for that but on other issues you know the green belt is such a big issue in South and regenerating areas like fiddlers ferry power station is something that I ll try and work to prioritize and and work with governments to ensure that ministers in government know about on needs and that we focus the regeneration effort into those areas that s the car to pay the new m.p. For wards and south admitted the only seat that s changed hands locally we re just waitin for the the last reports and in fact we can go now to Jessica Robbins who is over. At Ellesmere Port Jessica s been a long night for you but you finally have a result. Has indeed been a very long night yes he joined us here in Ellesmere Port sports village where everybody is franticly claiming the tables around us and I ve managed to grab just in matters he has more and he s retained his seat with 26001 the nearest to him was obviously the conservatives are 17237 thank you so much for waiting around and joining me congratulations I suppose for retaining your seat but a strange night for Labor. It s more a strange niceties Astra s not for the lower part we ve had 10 years of a terrible government wreaking havoc on our communities been riven by proxy. For the last 3 and a half years and yet we end up with Brazil in living memory we clearly have to do something differently next time we are. The communities we represent to get it right to get people a real choice in the next election and not only way we re going to get a Labor government that s the only way we re going to make a difference to people s lives did you see it coming the exit polls were quite clear before this I had the rumblings about Jeremy Corbyn not being the right person for the job the party must have come as that much of a shock. Well. No it s been played from from the opinion poll since on that we we were we were struggling I think it would be wrong to ascribe or difficulties to one person I think there are a number of factors in play here and I think if we just saw or Jeremy cope with it means that if we just replace him with a different name and change nothing else then it s not desirable to get the same result next time we need a very for a. Reflection reflected consideration of the reasons why we have done so badly tonight because it isn t uniform across the country we don t quite well in some places would be pretty well around there I think disastrously in places like Yorkshire and all faced. And those are the kind of places that really. He should not be anywhere near the Conservative Party s rich alone returning conservative m.p. So we absolutely do need to. Talk to those voters who have deserted his in their droves tonight understand what it is a slide into that and find a way to win them back I was going to say the northwest is still quite red but around she was a very big sea of play with more of yourselves and Christmas and he s retained his sea in Chester and the Liverpool m P s What do you think it is that they ve done the others haven t is it being local and being part of a community. Well I think that starts for of a people to to to decide but what what I I would say is I have sources I was allowed to 2015 today. And I m paid here is based on communes across a little group and family here are absolutely make it Mark priority to do as much to support the local community because we don t have a lot of a lot of challenges and I think that probably that is one of the reasons why we haven t done as badly here is over places and I think that Christian Juster is exactly the same sort of unpick to me Coburn is announced tonight that he will stand down that he won t be fighting another election as leader what s going to happen when you get back to Westminster and I suppose it s early days but any football is here well there s a number of potential names in the frame. I going to happen at Minden at the moment so I think that. It s probably too early to be saying this person will that person is the answer but I think I would like to hear from anyone who considers themselves a potentially divided party what it is that I think we got wrong this time what s we need to do to put it right and then you know more significantly how they re actually going to deliver that because we can t afford to lose this badly ever again in the future we actually do need to rebuild and we need something very special leader in order to do that just and thank you very much I ll let you get her into bed I don t think I m going to be long. My body the pull that from the very believe the idols Mayport actual seaward on thank you very much that s very very hard trashy Jessica Rob is there the very final scene locally to declare the fact is only 21 seats in the whole United Kingdom which is still to declare what s Ellesmere Port and that s that will take staying with the Labor party Yes Absolutely again part of that if you like you know great to Merseyside effect again a seat within the orbit or close to the orbit of of Liverpool and we re seeing here the labor vote shares they re dropping but you know labor getting in comfortably and that s been very much the Patten on Merseyside very different everywhere else virtually Yeah well the place that s often referred to as the the capital of North Wales is Liverpool you have a look in a few moments over the Welsh border into Wales and see how it s gone in Wiles you listen to b.b.c. Radio Merseyside it s the general election special Beazley with you which will take from the university level we re here for another 20 minutes but it s not over then because the record show is going to be begin at 6 o clock an hour early with Tony Snow and Claire how will turn assess in the nights are the very very bad nights for the Labor Party here in the general election. Thank. You. Election Special b.b.c. Radio Maisie s on. 60 minutes to 6 o clock that is what you are listening to it is b.b.c. Radio with me Paul Beazley it will take from the University of Liverpool still it s going to look at North Wales Yeah. Well Wells in particular really what s happened well I mean Wales you know again Traditional a very much dominated by the Labor Party. 40 parliamentary constituencies in Wales so only $22.00 have gone labor whereas 14 for the conservatives for the conservatives are up 6 and looking at the electoral map now and I ve never ever seen one map on recent times anyway electoral map of Wales that looks like this we have a block of red in South Wales in those former industrial heartlands of South Wales and everything else is either blue or the light green color of Applied Comrie and in North Wales number where of Normally we have a number Labor seats that s all gone blue apart from one the think it s Dalin. So Allen and decide rather sorry so I mean really that part of this effect that we re seeing of these labor areas being wiped out and rolling. The conservatives that s very very evident in North Wales as well so that if you live there that greater Liverpool effect of these places when Liverpool s or bit where we ve been seeing them largely remaining laboring quite comfortably that clearly does not exist extend into North Wales not until they are very different and you re also talking about the south of the country as well and some of the Lib Dems votes yes are looking down in the Southwest I mean the southwest is usually a Lib Dems are not a stronghold but it s an area where the Lib Dems normally pick up a lot of seats and do well that the results in the Southwest are coming through very late but the ones that are coming through are seeing big drops in the Lib Dems vote share and you know an overtime law you know 20152017 now 2019 they have really losing each election more and more votes in in an area where they ve traditionally done really very very well one of the thing I could just pick up is regarding the s.m.p. In Scotland where we looked like it looked like they were going to get over 50 seats and Ruth Davidson had promised that if they did get 50 seats Davidson the former leader of the Scottish conservatives had said if the s.n.p. Got 50 seats she would swim naked in Loch Ness Well it looks like the s. And p. Aren t going to quite make it so it looks like she won t have to do it. To save all lot less a safe about here with you all but what whether the we have $637.00 seats to clear there s only 13 seats to go in the 30 minutes of this program laughter so we can get it all done and dusted before 6 o clock the turnout in the last election the actual It s been 67.2 percent is the rights for general elections doing well it s around about where we ve been recent general elections it s where below where we used to be. Even as recently as the early 1990 s. So we saw turnout drop from 1990. 7 onwards and it started to crawl back up again but we re really way off where we were and you know people were saying yesterday when they were seeing some long queues at polling stations it looked like we re going to have a high turnout we had lots and lots of people registering to vote so people thought it might be a high turnout election it s not it really clearly isn t let s let s just look at the share of the votes or the Conservative Party have taken 43.5 percent of the share as it stands at the moment they have 355 seats they lost 10 seats but they ve made 56 gains but the big problem tonight for labor has been the number of losses they ve gained one single seat I think that was partly was in that we were talking as right here in hotly was again for labor they lost 59 seats at the moment that on 202 seats don t forget the 3 to 6 is the magic number and the conservatives are past that number. A clear majority is only 13 seats to go is to say the story from the Knights of Labor has been bad it s not being brilliant it s all for the Lib Dems are the Bloss their leader now I mean for the Lib Dems This is going to be really really disappointing they went into this election confident that they could increase their parliamentary representation they had done well in the European elections earlier in the year really really well it s just it s all gone wrong for them everything and to lose your own party leader in a general election it really is an incredibly rare event so it s bad for labor it s bad for the Liberal Democrats and the Liberal Democrats they you know they keep thinking it s their moment when they re going to get bounce back it just doesn t seem to happen for them and they re going to clearly have to look for another leader yet again yeah years ago you re listening to b.b.c. Radio most recent. Election results b.b.c. Radio Mazie so. The weather outside is frightful but the 5 years life and since we have no place to go let it snow let it snow let it snow. Man it does it shows signs of stopping and I ve got news of. The lights turned down. Let it snow. It s. When we re finally kiss good night I ll be going up just a home. But if you really hold me tight. All the way home all there was. And the fire was dying and my dear we re still goodbye but as long as you love me. Let it snow let it snow and. When we finally kissed goodnight policy going I understood. But it really grabbed me. All the way home all day long all the Father s Love lived I. Did was still goodbye but as long as it is. Let it snows let it snow let it snow. That we go let it snow you listen to b.b.c. Radio as he saw it s 9 minutes to 6 o clock turn east I was going to hear the breakfast show after the news bulletin at 6 class Hamilton All Political Report. We ll be with Tony on the lies in the figures but still with me still it will take from the University of Liverpool that he s been here all night so we re going to take you through a resume a in a moment of the picture locally which is very very different Still it s the picture nationally completely different just give us a quick resume of the national picture of your world for those people are just waking up well the national picture I mean the big story of this election is the decay or the collapse of Labour s Redwall So these areas which have been Labor forever they ve been switching over to the conservatives. In huge numbers and have to give Boris Johnson. A very comfortable majority and that s mostly been happening outside of the big city so it s the kind of smaller format industrial towns places like Wolverhampton Stowe and so on the liberal Democrats haven t done well they ve lost seats they ve lost their leader the s.n.p. Have done very well not as well as initially expected but they ve made big gains in Scotland but the big story the night is labor is their worst result. In a very long time even worse than 1903 and Boris Johnson is home and dry here that s very much locally very different will take you through the local results very shortly Stuart it s always struck me after say that you know in the modern age of technology and smartphones and x. Factor voting on your phone we still walk into a little box pick up a pencil and put a mark on a piece of paper and I mean drop it in a box and there s a whole process of someone to physically count that we have got to get away from the system we were meant to so our system is very much one designed by the Victorians So actually the Victorian was to come back now and go and vote they would recognize a lot of this process until it really really. Really it s quite remarkable isn t it . Now Labor when they were in power under Tony Blair they had a policy of moving towards what they called an e enabled general election so they wanted Evo ting and actually that was meant to happen by the mid 2000 and we never got anywhere near it there were a few trials and so on so it s very difficult to do because of the security concern so how do you make electronic voting absolutely secure from hacking and so on you know people think you know various points we thought the banking industry they ve worked out they ve made it secure and then we learn actually they haven t and the systems are vulnerable but the other thing is the verification process because if people are voting electronically it kind of all goes into a box somewhere and it gets counted by a computer so exactly how do you verify that process we wouldn t have election counts any more than all the candidates standing around the tables looking at the piles of back because they would basically have to take on trust what a computer is telling them is the answer and I m not sure we re ready for that I m not sure our candidates are ready for that well you know at least we haven t got chads well into the realm of the. Infamous. Report Al Gore with his with his chads Yeah we definitely haven t got but yeah what we have got is a whole series of results locally 22 M.P. s in our locality all the results of that are being declared the last one to come in was Ellesmere Port and that s them which was in the end the labor Holford just in matters not entirely sure why that went on so long as quite a clear majority for just the mothers there but let s just take you through all the local results. Of these results in the breakfast show with Tony Snell and Claire Howell certain after the news at 6 o clock but wholesome is a labor whole Derrik Twigg been reelected in holds and George Howard held. The body safe knows Lee seat for labor we have a new m.p. In back in has because Frank Field is no longer the m.p. He stood as an independent on the seat has now been taken by Mick Whitley we re hearing from Mick a little bit earlier that one seat that could have changed hands a night was Southport it was held by the conservatives it s still held by the conservatives Damian more successfully fought off a labor challenge to be reelected as the m.p. For Southport Peta Donald is still the m.p. For brutal economy again is since Helen s north some p. He was reelected as was Maria Eagle for golf s them and hell Ward Allison McGovern struck Labor once again for would all South be less the sum is still the m.p. For Sefton central undying Carden very strong supporter Jeremy Corbyn is the m.p. For Liverpool wants to marry Rimmer held on Sassoon s Helen south for labor we are nothing new in him Byrne He s the m.p. For Liverpool West RB Now he held that seat for labor Margaret remoter was re-elected for labor where West Angela Eagle has held on for Wallasey and we ve got 2 new M.P. s in Liverpool so the 3 in total Paula Barkat is the new m.p. For Liverpool Wavertree And incidentally. Failed to win the Finchley seat that she stood for for the Lib Dems she increased the vote massively because the lost by about 6000 votes and Kym Johnson is Liverpool s 1st black m.p. She has been elected for Liverpool Riverside office the previously held by Louise Ellman my game s great that was a possible loss for labor but didn t go that way we ve avail my games there is still the m.p. For We ve a rosy Cooper is the labor m.p. For West flying Charlotte Nickols is a new m.p. The seat isn t due to labor but his new m.p. For Warrington North Chris Matheson was re-elected for chest for labor. I covered just the members with ports and nest them boats the walls while conservative gain in the area that was watering from south which is gone to the Carter. Just about done and dusted we ve come to the end still it will take I just want to say thank you very much for being here since the the bitter starts on the heat of the bitter and my pleasure I ve enjoyed it it s been a whole but it s been absolutely fascinating to work through these results to the state will take of the university level Thanks very much and thank you also I am especially to Grace Eden has been our producer since the very start through to the very end and I just want to say thank you it s all about team out about Jimmy McCracken Jessica Robbins Phil can sell a Christmas Mark I asked Steve Roberts Clements of Phil Cooper Phil McCann James mouth for it and Phil moans we all do an amazing job to make this event work tonight thank you very much from grace from Stewart s I m from myself Paul Beasley Don t go anywhere the news is next and then Tony Snow in Claire Hamilton will be hit with the breakfast show analyzing the night for you we re going to leave you in what we think is an appropriate way good night. As the Beatles. Bring into and all general election special he had on b.b.c. Radio as he saw at the time. Just coming up one minutes after 6 o clock the breakfast show is next with Tony Snow in class but now it s time for the b.b.c. News with Julie about Good morning and in the last hour it s been confirmed the conservatives have won the general election with a majority the party s made gains at the expense of labor and its traditional heartlands once all the counting is complete the Tuileries a projected to finish on 364 seats label on 200 following is reelection in his north London. Constituency Jeremy Corbin announced he would not lead Labor into another general election and would stand down as party leader following a period of reflection but one of the biggest casualties of the night the Lib Dems leader Joe Swinson lost by $149.00 votes to the s.n.p. In East Dunbartonshire her party of thought to be on course to win 13 seats in total in Scotland the s.n.p. Is likely to win more than 50 Nigel Farage is breaks it Party aren t expected to win any seats locally the only change in our area has been in Warrington south where Labor lost the seat it comes conservative on because it s a he s told us he s ready for Westminster to message on the doorstep people wanted democracy to be respected and that is something that we will do with a conservative majority government and I m looking forward to joining very strong. Fellow conservatives in the House of Commons actually Labor s done counting was reelected in Liverpool Walton he s been a big supporter of Jeremy Corbin and isn t blaming the party s leader for their defeat this heartbreaking incredibly disappointing but just remember back in 2017 Jeremy called want to leave the Labor Party took the touring majority away we saw the biggest surge in the labor vote back in 20 something so I think we have to face up to the fact that this is not about Jeremy called One it s not about the manifesto and policies that we know are popular with the public this is an incredibly divided country in Birkenhead Frank Field who is now an independent after leaving labor they someone lost his seat after 40 years he went to his former party with Nick Whitley voted in Alison McGovern retained her we re all South seats a short time ago she told her she s got it by the national picture in this campaign we ve seen in the rough sleeping all around us we know what s going on with food banks in this country and I m so devastated of fighter and those things in our country looks like it just got a lot harder Maria Eagle held her seating Gaston Hailwood in the labor m.p. Told us the party has to make changes as the electorate told them they re wrong we have to ask ourselves as a.
