Cabell hopes to release back-to-school guidance soon

HUNTINGTON — Additional back-to-school guidance and updated safety protocols are expected to be released for Cabell County students and staff by the end of the week.
Superintendent Ryan Saxe said after the West Virginia Board of Education and state Department of Education provide updated guidance on Wednesday, the local school district hopes to provide its own information on back-to-school protocol sooner rather than later.
“One of the things we want to be able to provide is information to our families so that they aren’t in anticipation of what is expected, what are the protocols we’re going to have for this coming year,” Saxe said. ....

Virtual option to be offered for Wayne County during 2021-22 school year

WAYNE — Wayne County students hoping to learn in a virtual setting for the 2021-22 school year will be granted that option, according to Superintendent Todd Alexander.
While the details are still being discussed, Alexander said there will be a “skeletal schedule” created to allow students who prospered during virtual learning or have special-needs requirements that are better met by virtual learning the opportunity to learn the best way they can.
By allowing students to learn virtually, Alexander said the district will keep students enrolled in the public school system.
“We’re going to be updating our virtual school policy. There will be a skeletal schedule of virtual classes that are available for students who medically cannot attend in person or if we have parents that absolutely insist,” he said. “The bottom line is we want to hold onto these kids. We don’t want them to go to homeschooling.” ....

Curriculum waiver continued for Explorer Academy

HUNTINGTON — The Cabell County Board of Education has voted to continue a waiver that will allow Explorer Academy in Huntington to continue their own English Language Arts curriculum, which differs from other schools in the county.
The waiver has been in place for several years, but recent action from the board members would have ended that exception and Explorer Academy would have adopted the same curriculum as the rest of the county.
A number of school families were vocal in their support for continuation of the current curriculum when a new district-wide curriculum was adopted in the spring, Superintendent Ryan Saxe said. ....
