How Jesus' foreskin became one of Christianity's most-coveted relics — and then disappeared

How Jesus foreskin became one of Christianity s most-coveted relics — and then disappeared
It s a relic deemed so taboo, the Vatican threatened excommunication to anyone who spoke of it. But for nearly 1,000 years before that, the holy foreskin of Jesus Christ was widely considered to be the holiest of relics. CBC Radio s Ideas examines the story of an unlikely object of devotion.

Paolo Portoghesi’s postmodernist architecture: curves, Baroque and irony
A love affair with the Baroque, a playful sense of irony, a captivation with curves and a passion for patterns define the life and work of postmodernist Italian architect Paolo Portoghesi
It took more than ten years to complete the Mosque of Rome, the city’s only Islamic temple
‘Do you know that I’ve always been rather fascinated by wallpaper?’ says Paolo Portoghesi gently, almost as if trying to break the ice. The 89-year-old architect, historian, poet, designer and mercurial icon of modern Italian culture shares a house with wife Giovanna in Calcata, a medieval hilltop town near Rome that has, in recent years, been repopulated by artists. The interiors feature a lot of wallpaper, mostly in patterns by William Morris, covering what empty wall space there is in the various libraries, studies, nooks and awkwar ....

Footprints, Fairies and even a Foreskin: 10 Bizarre Relics from History

The Fairy Flag is made from silk that originated in the far east, denoting its luxury status on the remote Isle of Skye. Being very old, it is now quite torn and tattered, and covered with tiny red “elf spots.” Shrouded in mystery, this strange relic has attained legendary status and is said to have magical properties and plenty of healing powers . Its origins are somewhat enigmatic, and the legends state that the MacLeod chiefs were presented with the flag by fairy folk . However, scholars suggested that its origins might lie not with the fairies, but in the Crusades, or the Viking invasions, for whom it could have been a ....

Calcata: The land that time forgot

Wanted in Rome
06 Feb, 2021
Calcata, in north Lazio, is a bohemian haven whose residents hark back to a more beautiful era.
Less than an hour north of Rome lies Calcata, a mediaeval village clinging to a volcanic cliff surging out of the mists of the densely-wooded Treja valley. With its rugged tufa walls and steep pathways, entering this mystical, car-free hamlet is like stepping back in time or falling into a dream where Woodstock meets Hansel and Gretel.
Stuff of fairytales
Calcata’s story is indeed the stuff of fairytales. Its history dates back almost 3,000 years and the presence of humans in the area can be traced to prehistoric times. However in the 1930s Calcata’s story very nearly came to a shuddering halt. The Fascist-era government condemned the craggy village due to fears that its foundations were subsiding, and by the 1960s the inhabitants had either relocated to the newly-built Calcata Nuova nearby or moved south to Rome. ....
