Restrictions to end: Gov. Mike DeWine announced in a special address Wednesday evening that all pandemic health orders - except those for nursing homes and assisted living facilities - will be lifted in three weeks, on June 2, Laura Hancock reports. DeWine’s decision nullifies his previous benchmark for dropping public health orders — when cases decline to 50 per 100,000 residents — which he made in his last public address, on March 4. The announcement also contained some creative, if unconventional, ways to drive up vaccine demand: college scholarships for five young Ohioans who start the vaccine and $1 million for five Ohio residents 18 and older who have started the shots.

McAlester school board changes district's mask policy | Covid-19

McAlester Public Schools officials made adjustments to the district's mask policy.
School board members voted to approve a policy change that would remove the district’s mask mandate — depending on the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s weekly COVID-19 risk level map.
OSDH’s weekly map determines each county’s risk level. Counties in the green risk phase have fewer than 1.43 daily new cases per 100,000 population, while yellow risk phase indicates between 1.43 and 14.29 daily new cases.
OSDH listed Pittsburg County in the yellow risk level last week. The agency releases the reports every Wednesday.
After lengthy discussion over the policy, board member Shelli Colbert moved to drop the mask requirement if Pittsburg County’s risk level goes green — but keep it in place if the county’s risk level is yellow or higher.

11th District: In the 1960s, Louis Stokes asked the nation’s highest court to declare that Cleveland’s congressional districts unfairly divided its African American community to dilute Black political power. So the Ohio legislature created the state’s only majority minority congressional district. When Ohio redraws its congressional maps this year to divide the state among 15 districts, the original district will likely lose its African American majority for the first time, Sabrina Eaton reports.

Not happening: Ohio Republican legislative leaders have abandoned a plan to ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment in August extending deadlines for Ohio’s new redistricting process. As Andrew Tobias reports, Senate President Matt Huffman, who floated the plan in light of delayed census data, had said he wouldn’t go forward without bipartisan support. Democratic leaders expressed concerns about a rushed process.

Redistricting: Democrats hope that a new map-drawing process approved by Ohio voters in 2018 will bring the state’s congressional seat ratio more in line with the proportion of the state’s Democratic voters. But Sabrina Eaton reports that new Ohio rules allow the state’s GOP-controlled legislature to approve temporary congressional maps if the bipartisan procedure set forth by voters doesn’t produce a consensus map. And that’s what many political operatives predict will happen.

Redistricting: Republican state legislative leaders are eying a vote next week that would ask voters in August to approve changes to Ohio’s system of redrawing its political maps before the new process has even been used. Andrew Tobias reports a proposed state constitutional amendment from Senate President Matt Huffman would allow lawmakers to set their own redistricting deadlines if U.S. Census data isn’t available on time. The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement saying they are “deeply concerned” the proposal would reduce chances for public input on the process of redrawing the state’s political maps.
