SGA works toward sustainability | The Volante

Anna Moore, USD sustainability grad student and Campus Recycling Coordinator, spoke to the SGA senate about strides USD and the Vermillion community are taking towards sustainability at this week’s SGA meeting.
“Here at USD when we talk about sustainability, especially coming from the academic sustainability department, you typically are thinking about two questions. The first question is, what kind of future do we want?” Moore said. “The second question is what can we do to get there?”
Marcus Destin represented the Dakota Days student board organization petitioning for large organization status. The senate granted Dakota Days large organization status.

SGA hosts deputy athletic director

USD’s Deputy Athletic Director, Mike West, and USD’s Director of Athletic Marketing and Promotions, Jarren Duffy, spoke at this week’s SGA meeting.
Student attendance at athletic events is growing and is above average compared to other universities. Normally over 200 students attend the volleyball and basketball games.
“It’s been awesome to see the students section grow just over the past few years. We’ve really laid down the foundation of what the students’ section could become,” Duffy said.
“This says so much about the spirit on this campus, and I just, I’m honored to be here,” West said. “I just want to thank you. It’s a real honor, and I want you to know that this student body is as good as any state in the country. Every year we get more and more students at the gains. It’s turning into something that’s about to blow up in a great way.”

Proposed draft plan presented to SGA promoting sustainability

The University Sustainability Committee proposed a plan to raise USD’s Atlas score, a score evaluating how sustainable the USD campus is, at Tuesday’s SGA meeting. Anna Moore, Campus Recycling Coordinator and sustainability grad major, said the most important thing to get the program going is involvement and consistency.
USD’s current Atlas score is 36%. The average score on universities in the U.S. is between 40 and 50 percent, Moore said.
The draft Atlas plan consists of several suggested steps including zero waste orientation, standardized and paired bins, residence hall recycling and reuse stations, resourceful dining and construction and renovation.
