Brett Crozier. Chronicle staff writers Matthias Gafni, Joe Garofoli and Tal Kopan won the award, announced Wednesday by Long Island University in New York, which since 1949 has honored investigative reporters across media platforms. ....

But much of the affidavit includes witness descriptions of alleged interference in the case by then-Police Chief Armando Perez. Perez, who is awaiting sentencing in April in federal court after pleading guilty to fixing the process that made him chief and lying to the FBI about it, has not been charged in connection with the Vazzano case and neither the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney or State Police would comment on whether he is under investigation. ....
