If you had told me after the second period that the Devils would end up only losing by one, I would have laughed at your face while simultaneously fighting back the urge to scream at a wall. After a horrible - and I mean HORRIBLE - first two periods, the Devils somehow were able to put up a six spot in the third period, to make an embarrassing game much more respectable while simultaneously showing the promise that the kids have. Even with this loss, I can’t help but smile at the fact that this team full of forwards not even over 26 years old were oh-so-close to coming back against a strong Penguins team, again showing why Devils fans have a lot to look forward to in the future. ....
First Period The Wood-McLeod-Bastian line started the game against the Rangers’ Panarin-Strome-Blackwell line. The Devils won the draw, and they got quickly on a dump and forecheck. Miles Wood did take the puck away, but the Ranger pushed it out of the zone. The Devils and Rangers then went back and forth, with the Devils blocking away a centering pass from Panarin to Strome. The Hughes line acme on, and Jack Hughes got the first shot on goal of the game. He collected the puck at the edge of the faceoff circle, turned, and shot into Alexandar Georgiev’s chest. ....
