(Photo courtesy Sail, Power, and Steam Museum) The Sail, Power, and Steam Museum continues to host its winter speaker series, sharing its mission of celebrating the maritime and industrial heritage of Midcoast Maine and beyond. “Captains’ Quarters: Stories of the Schooner Mary Day” will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. The talk will take place utilizing the online portal, Zoom. Although the schooner Mary Day is considered a classic of the Maine coast, many are not aware that she never carried cargo or fish in her hold as so many of the local windjammers did in the past. The first of the Maine windjammers to be built exclusively for carrying passengers along the coast of Maine, the 90-ft wooden schooner was designed by her first Captain, Havilah “Bud” Hawkins, Sr. and she celebrated 50 years in service at the Camden Windjammer Festival in 2012, having logged over 150,000 miles at the time. ....

Unique in the Maine Windjammer fleet, Angelique is a newly built (1980) traditionally styled vessel whose design was adapted specifically for the windjammer trade. She differs from the other so called “windjammers” as she is rigged as a gaff topsail ketch rather than a schooner, and with her plumb bow and tan bark (red) sails, she is easily identified while sailing out on the Maine waters.
