It does require the courts involvement, which for some individuals can be a traumatic thing. Overall it provides crucial treatment for patients whose Mental Illness itself prevents them from recognizing that they in fact need treatment and will be able to benefit from it. I want to underscore that in the department of Public Health there are over 30,000 individuals each year who are treated in a voluntary way.
