Napoleon's Love of Cologne May Be What Killed Him, Says UK Biochemist


It is known that Napoleon distrusted doctors, and he preferred to wash his body from head to toe with men’s perfume on a daily basis to preserve his health and vitality. He apparently even consumed it on occasion, so convinced was he that it contained magical ingredients that could keep him young forever.
A Modern Diagnosis
In limited doses, Napoleon’s favorite cologne might have been harmless, or even beneficial. Colognes get their distinctive odors from essential oils found in flowers and other plants. These oils can have some positive effects, if taken in limited doses. They can boost the functioning of the immune system, reduce inflammation, help reduce anxiety, and promote healthy sleep, among other possible benefits. ....

History: Napoleon Bonaparte's obsession with COLOGNE may have led to fatal cancer, study reveals


Napoleon Bonaparte died in exile on the island of St Helena on May 5, 1821
While his autopsy cited stomach cancer as the cause, other theories abound
Some argued his death had been faked, while others said he had been poisoned
Now, 200 years later, biomedical scientist Parvez Haris has an different theory
The ex-emperor accidentally poisoned himself with an overdose of essential oils 
This, he says, explains much of Napoleon s deteriorating health in his final years

On May 5, 1821, 200 years ago this week, Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, born in 1769 on the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean,  expired, at the age of 51, on the island of St Helena in the South Atlantic. Considered by many as an islander – born and died on islands – he was also exiled on the Italian island of Elba in 1814, from where he made his surprise heroic comeback for 100 days in 1815, until finally he faced allied enemies for the last time at Waterloo.
In June 1798, then a promising 29-year-old French general, Bonaparte dropped anchor in Malta for six days on his way to Egypt before his rise to conquer most of the continent, removing monarchies, and reign as the lord of Europe for 15 years. The French Malta interlude did not last long but it did ignite what was to become the island’s long road to future freedom and independence. ....
