Chicago city administration rocked by crisis following school reopenings, ongoing police violence
The Democratic Party administration of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is facing a deepening political crisis, with a wave of resignations and departures among her deputies and other city leaders, including the top three figures at Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
On Tuesday morning, a spokeswoman told reporters that Lightfoot would be granting one-on-one interviews “only to Black or Brown journalists.” This move is calculated to shore up support among the identity politics-obsessed upper-middle class constituency of the Democratic Party. By shifting focus to the identities of the journalists making inquiries, Lightfoot is transparently attempting to avoid answering questions about the many scandals besetting her administration, the recent wave of resignations and the release of thousands of leaked emails by city officials. ....

Different African populations were genetically interrelated suggesting abundant gene flow across Africa such that all African population should be considered together as single subspecies.
There appeared a striking genomic distance between leopards living in Asia vs. leopards in Africa.
Asian leopards are more genetically separated from African leopards than brown bear species are from polar bear species, the researchers found.
The two leopard groups actually diverged around the same time as Neanderthals split apart from modern humans.
The genetic differences between African and Asian leopards have been maintained since 500,000 to 600,000 years ago. Asian leopards retain markedly less overall genetic variation than is seen in African leopards. ....

LAS CRUCES - Kevin Boberg spent more than 30 years serving New Mexico State University and was the idea man behind some of its most impactful economic development and community engagement projects but you’d never know it to talk to him. Always keen to defer attention to other collaborators and colleagues, Boberg seldom took credit for the impact he had on the university and its students, though his humble nature belied a lasting legacy of transformative work.
Boberg, who passed away in March after a long illness, joined the faculty of NMSU’s College of Business in 1987, having previously taught at Penn State University and the University of Hawaii. He was soon named associate dean and director of the Bureau of Business Research and Services in the college. ....

As the pandemic wanes, a chorus of commentators are offering predictions about what mark it will leave on higher education—with some forecasting colleges collapsing and others seeing increasing alliances with commercial partners. Most anticipate the growing centrality of online learning in university life.
As a longtime proponent of online higher education, I thought I’d take a stab at imagining a couple of effects digital education might have on teaching and learning in the college classroom.

Of the many remarkable things about online learning—its principal benefit—is to give students the freedom to learn almost anywhere.
